speaking as a former police officer i can tell you they usually only ask you to turn out your pockets if you say "i don't have a wallet" or something like that. Carry two wallets, one with about $5-10 in it and expired credit cards and driver's license if such a thing is allowed in your state/country, also fill it with a small amount of clutter. Hand the dummy wallet when being mugged.
You would think most criminals are unique and beautiful snowflakes but they're not like 24 out of 25 (a guess on my experience) follow the same methodology and motives.
