The basics of this act are that the government will have full control of the internet in every way shape and form. In 1 years time they will then setup a licensing, certification, and periodic recertification program for cybersecurity professionals. Beginning 3 years after the date of enactment of this Act, it shall be unlawful for any individual to engage in business in the United States, or to be employed in the United States, as a provider of cybersecurity services to any Federal agency or an information system or network designated by the President, or the President's designee, as a critical infrastructure information system or network, who is not licensed and certified under the program.

AKA Government will control ALL public and private IT and Web services giving them effective control of all free enterprise as IT is the heart of Operations of all companies to date.

2) This bill is a contingency plan that was mostly written to aid if and when domestic/international hackers make a cohesive effort to get information from any part of civilian or gov't institutions.

My apologies... It came up in another discussion, and I didn't want to clog the other discussion. I was unaware it was already up.

Man I hope this bill dies.
I honestly can't believe this. Not only is congress mangling any real and good reform, but now it looks like it's actively trying to screw us over. I fervently hope that Obama doesn't support this.

This will never be passed, and if it is it will be removed quickly. Thats a lot of power for the government.

but... how will I keep my stache of porn sites a secret!

DAMN THEM.
The patriot act let them see that ages ago, if you find any porn with the word "bomb" or "attack" in it, and you downloaded it. They flagged everything you did on the internet and watched it. Check your stash, you've probably been watch for the last year at least.

[Edit] If you'd like a link to that, or you are not 100% sure what it is go to the wiki page here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_PATRIOT_Act

I think that IN THEORY this is waaay less invasive than the Patriot Act. In my understanding, the main part of this bill would allow the president to shut down websites in the event of a cyber-terrorist attack. I don't see anything wrong with that, as I can't imagine that any of the websites that the average American frequents are vital to National Security. However, any bill like this has the possibility to be abused.

Also, to anyone who's trying to use this as a way to condemn a political party, the bill is co-sponsored by a moderate Republican and a moderate Democrat.

The internet is a heaven for free speech and information.(Most of the times anyways). By limiting the amount of information I have access to your infringing my rights. You're CENSORING the internet, so that people might not find out shit you don't want them to find out. Now I'll be damned if I'm going to let anyone censor the best way to find information about anything you feel like finding information about.

USA's becoming China.
