I think that IN THEORY this is waaay less invasive than the Patriot Act. In my understanding, the main part of this bill would allow the president to shut down websites in the event of a cyber-terrorist attack. I don't see anything wrong with that, as I can't imagine that any of the websites that the average American frequents are vital to National Security. However, any bill like this has the possibility to be abused.

Also, to anyone who's trying to use this as a way to condemn a political party, the bill is co-sponsored by a moderate Republican and a moderate Democrat.
Ahh, finally someone that's not running around like a chicken with its head chopped off.

The internet is a heaven for free speech and information.(Most of the times anyways). By limiting the amount of information I have access to your infringing my rights. You're CENSORING the internet, so that people might not find out shit you don't want them to find out. Now I'll be damned if I'm going to let anyone censor the best way to find information about anything you feel like finding information about.

USA's becoming China.
*sigh* It's for the likely event of a cyberterrorist attack. Or would you rather Greg Isaac or John Smith to run around with your identity?

And for the record, China's becoming the U.S. Its economy is booming, and it's starting to evolve into a blend of a socialist and capitalist/democratic state, not just a communist one. Plus, they don't have to worry about hackers. We have to worry about theirs.

I would have to strongly disagree with you. I would rather John Smith run around with my identity then government having full access to my personal networks... I have much more expensive things to protect than my identity... The state of California has been selling information for a looooong time, it is not at all safe with the government. I on the other hand am a security expert focusing mainly on Cisco... They have a program called Cisco Certification program which is a college for security experts ranking as high as CCIE. They get paid 300$ per hour for their services. Government will be eliminating that entire industry if they do this. I have zero fear of hackers because I am better than government security along with most in my field. The government needs to start employing good employees and running like a business.

No, I would definitely say it is not for counter-terrorism. It is another governmental control step. If you control the information, then you control everything.

What do you expect? Human beings had to find the middle ground that they will stay with eventually. Socialism is dying, Capitalism is dying. They will die off around the middle ground where is where they will find the means to eventually unite as a full world government. Not a conspiracy theory, nor do I condemn or condone. Just an observation.

Soon Americans wont be able to search for human rights on google :O
thats because the majority of people would prefer the Azorious senate (cookie) for a government, instead of elected individuals who see beyond the paper thin facades of lies and decite they force feed us every single second of the day.

at least this will fuck over NCsoft, those self-indulgent bastards

You're just a conspiracy theorist and fear monger. Nothing more. If this was a big deal the net neutrality groups I pay attention to would be focusing on this and not things like the fact the telecom companies are trying to fuck people over again.

This is merely for emergencies, but of course you're not going to believe what a "liberal gook" says. The only reason I decided to waste any time on responding to this is because I cannot believe people like you are so fearful and dense, claiming a breach of the Constitution by this administration while casually ignoring the crimes committed by the last (explain to me how warantless wiretapping isn't controlling information, hmmm?). Your hypocrisy and those of people like you is perhaps the greatest crime of all.

And I'm also a lot more inclined to take the words of people like Richard Clarke over people like you, cause he's trying to allay fears rather than stir them up.

But of course, Karma is perhaps the ultimate equalizer, so when someone from China takes away everything on your network, I hope you remember this. I hope you remember it well.

Well, I think we have differing opinions because you live in California, and I'm a New Yorker. No governor of mine has fucked over my state... yet.

Plus, there's lots of conspiracy theories out there saying that the world is going to end, or that the government is controlling us with flu shots, or... what have you. If shit really starts to hit the fan, then I'm fucking legging it to Canada. At the moment, I'm not particularly worried that the government will see my search history or what I've been telling my friends on Facebook. I've got nothing to hide. If anything, I know stuff they'd like to know.

Although I'm not in favor of a fascist police state, I am in favor of the government cracking down on more people. I would bet that most of you Escapists don't have much to hide, if at all. Even if some of you were to get caught, it'd be a slap on the wrist at worst. And this is just the American Escapists.

There's also many here that don't have to worry about it because they're in another part of the world. And for that, I envy you.

Edit: I also just realized you said you'd rather an identity thief run amok with your personal information. Do you know how much shit he/she could pull? Not to mention the long hours trying to get your information back.

... You just don't get it, do you? The government wants nothing of our personal information. They don't want to sully your good name and buy tons of cocaine with your checking account or send a hundred copies of Twilight- en Espanol- to your Kindle.

Oi.

Oh great, now that internet's going the way of the radio it appears we'll have to find another non-regulated medium.

Sensationalist media at it once again. First of all, this won't pass due to free speech implications, and the fact that it expects multiple large carriers of web access will comply with faulty government regulation without raising a stink.

Even if those two HUGE hypotheticals were to actually happen (the bill pass and ISP's comply with regulation) it is primarily meant to be put into effect during a large scale act of cyberterrorism, the scale of which current technology couldn't provide.

On a side note, if you're interested in your personal rights over a digital medium, there is an absolutely fantastic book written on the subject. The writer, Daniel Solove, is a lawyer with a large background in computer technology. the book is The Digital Person.

Don't the Americans have some kind of piece of paper that makes this illegal?
The Constitution?
That old thing?

No one pays attention to that anymore.

Today the government prefers doing whatever it assumes will get its party reelected,
Whether thats starting a few wars, stamping on a few rights or imitating communist ideals.

It seems that more and more the constitution is considered a mild suggestion when compared to either political party's ideas.

mayby, they'll actually read this fucking one (and for the love of god understand it), unlike the last few big bills which, for some reason no one read, like the stimulus bill

Why can't the liberal fascists of America just fuck off and leave everything alone? The government doesn't need to be in our business all the time. If anything, we need as little government as possible. A perfect world would be Anarchist, but that's only a pipedream that no one but Mario would be willing to follow (and I doubt even he'd check that pipe either).

But how the fuck can they control the internet? I know Al Gore claims to have invented it (the dumbass) but what the fuck are they going to do? Block every site that allows free speech and human rights in order to "protect" the citizens from... nothing? I swear, if Obama and the liberal-sociopaths of America get re-elected, I'm gonna have to do something about this.

Oi! For the last time, they're not looking to wholly control the internet. They're trying to introduce it as a contingency plan in case of cyberterrorist attack.

They're not looking to limit free speech. They're not trying to control the masses. And for the record-

So if by <quote=SilverUchiha> the liberal fascists you mean a bipartisan task force, then be my guest.

Seeing that i live in Iceland and that the government here copycats nearly everything other nations do,i think i´m pretty screwed if this bill gets passed. No matter how unlikely that is.
