Sadly this isn't just a U.S. problem. If this would pass that would more then likely mean that if anyone from another country decided to go to a U.S. based web site, our government would consider it on the same lines as you were visiting our country. So they would declare it that they would have the right to trace you and react accordingly if they consider you a "threat".

I'll up and leave the country if this goes into effect, that is unless, we all unite together to resist this civil liberty atrocity. This disgusts me that the government would be willing to strip away our rights like this, 1st we had the Patriot Act, now this, what else is next?

You're kidding, right? This isn't as bad as you're all making it out to be. You're acting as if this is the Apocalypse of the Internet.

The bill, even if it passes, which it likely won't, won't affect you extremely. All it is saying is that to be a provider of Cyber-Security for the Government, you have to have a license.

The basics of this act are that the government will have full control of the internet in every way shape and form. In 1 years time they will then setup a licensing, certification, and periodic recertification program for cybersecurity professionals. Beginning 3 years after the date of enactment of this Act, it shall be unlawful for any individual to engage in business in the United States, or to be employed in the United States, as a provider of cybersecurity services to any Federal agency or an information system or network designated by the President, or the President's designee, as a critical infrastructure information system or network, who is not licensed and certified under the program.
You are seriously scared by this. For the President to designate the Internet as a "critical infrastructure information system", he would have to somehow destroy phones and fax machines, since they can accomplish everything the Internet can.

AKA Government will control ALL public and private IT and Web services giving them effective control of all free enterprise as IT is the heart of Operations of all companies to date.

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/08/28/taking_liberties/entry5270834.shtml

Here is the actual bill..

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:s.00773:
The Internet will be fine. And what do you mean it will control public and private IT enterprise? They're simply making sure that IT people need a license to practice their trade, juts like, oh, I don't know. A salesman? A chef? It's just a license to do your job. And even if the President designated the Internet as "critical infrastructure", it would mean that only licensed cybersecurity could work on it, which to me sounds like a pretty good thing.

...but they're dying out as people prefer sensationalism.
I know what you mean... We are a rare breed anymore that depend on fact and logic. Even a lot of the print media are going bad... Like New York Times reported that a Anti-Obama guy bit off a Pro-Obama guys finger yesterday, when it was 100% the opposite....

I am starting to worry about the human race as a whole.......... We are blurring the lines between animals and us. We used to have logic that seperated us, but it seems that soceity looks down on logic now.
At least NPR is still somewhat decent: they get accusations of bias from BOTH sides of debates. Supposedly, they're somewhat liberally slanted, but I think they became aware of this a long time ago and started getting more perspectives to balance it out. Recently, I heard a caller complain that they were conservatively biased (the caller was from Massachusetts), so I think they're good if not amazing by comparison.

No, I would definitely say it is not for counter-terrorism. It is another governmental control step. If you control the information, then you control everything.

Its a proposal, It hasn't actually passed yet
And I highly doubt it will. There isn't a Congressman alive who would want to risk pissing off his constituants by passing this thing. And you can bet there would be a lot of pissed off constituants, what with the Internet rapidly becoming as ubiquitous as electricity in most modern households.

I laugh at all of those who see this as a harbinger of doom. I'm done trying to make them see that the sky is not falling.

Do I even need to say that America is halfway to socialism? If not closer?

And would I get arrested or something for screaming "revolt" on the forums? :p

*sigh* Short answer: no.

Long answer: Old bean, you'd be hard pressed to get a mere slap on the wrist. They don't care what we're typing.

For the last time. It's not a "Big Brother" bill. It's meant as a contingency plan for, god forbid, there is ever a cyberterrorist attack. Without such a lockdown, hackers could get away with tons of personal data, maybe even your own.

Edit: I do realize that I just reneged on my pseudo-promise.

Thank you.

A government takeover of the internet. Pffhahahaha.
Oh well if the person in charge says that it's gonna be ok then it's FINE!!!! My avatar says he's your benevolent god but would you want your country to be run by Anubis?
I'd be concerned if my country was run by Anubis, as he is an ancient Egyptian god and I'm not sure he'd really want to run for public office.

Anyway, even if there wasn't word from a senator or other politician, a government takeover of the internet is pretty unfeasible.

I really hope that this doesn't pass. The Internet is the last truly free place on Earth (and it's becoming less and less so every day). This could mean more 'security', but many Americans have given up a shit ton of rights lately for all their added security so this isn't necessary.
Actually, we've been forced to give up shitloads of rights for the ILLUSION OF SECURITY.
True that. This is just one of the reasons why I'm truly proud to be Canadian. But if we start down the same path I'm moving to Scandinavia.
You pansy, stand and fight. Canada is owned by the people. Sure, the government goes off and does ridiculous things sometimes, but then we make them remember it in the next election. And we can always turst the NDP to send some hardcore zingers at ridiculous laws and whatnot. I'm sure we would pull through eventually. Although it's good that you would want to go to Scandinavia, since it's cold. I would really be calling you a mansy if you wanted to move to some heat loving place...

And... like all the other programs put into affect throughout the world (Australia too) it will be broken in less then 30 minutes by a 13 year old boy with too much time on his hands. No seriously, we had a far worse system about to go into place and it was all proven to be a waste of time by a teenager and he did it in less then a hour! That system would of slowed Australia's internet services to a crawl and jacked up the cost of all ISP's to police a system that even a child could work around! All so the government could know what pages we where visiting and block... well no one is really sure, they still refuse to hand over the list of sites they wanted to make sure we Australian's couldn't view.

Control over the internet is laughable... Even China can't manage it and they have been trying since the damn thing went up.

I don't want to go to Scandinavia for the weather, I'd go there for the hockey (woo! Forsberg!), the metal (Woo! Bodom!!), or the women (WOO!!!).

But I get what you're saying. If a law like this begins to arise, you best trust that I will be part of the petition and the protesting. I will not go down without a fight when my Internet rights are in jeopardy.
