Scientists from Italy and sweden have developed what is thought to be the first artificial hand with feeling. Researchers say it works by connecting human nerve endings with tiny electronic sensors.

A man who is 22 years old is now in control of this hand after surgery.

This man can now control this hand and feel things when he picks things up but this isn't the end of it, this could lead to many other artifical limbs with feeling.

What do you think about this?

Is it something that could change the world? Will we be on the knees to our cyborg overlords in 5years time? Will this benefit you or your family in anyway if it is offered world wide? Would you cut your hand off just to have it!?

anyway, I'm sure they already have prototype cybernetic limbs in America which have feeling.
oh wait... they were using the nerve endings for the 'phantom limb' thingymabob...
and then they just have to move something-or-other and such-and-such that and...
nevermind, I've confused myself. :|

Anything which gives more freedom to someone suffering a disability is welcomed by me. I think it's fantastic that medical science is advancing the way it is and things like this, previously only thought to be science fiction are becoming more and more like reality. It's excellent news.

I second that, although I think it's still decades until this technology can be in common use...

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I wouldn't cut off my own hand to use that. Moral issues aside, I don't believe any techno-hand can ever match the full operational and feeling capacity of an actual human hand.

From there he was able to control the robot arm in the University of Reading and to obtain feedback from sensors in the finger tips. He also successfully connected ultrasonic sensors on a baseball cap and experienced a form of extra sensory input.

This is why I wanted him as my teacher.

Has it been connected to someone who has lost his/her arm? or is he still working on that.
