Yes..... yes they do.

I would have thrown a shit fit at the moment she pushed all the stuff off the table.

I don't get how role-playing is sin or devil worship.
There's a certain thing about role-playing games like D&D. It's full of magic and wizards and demons and summoning and such and you can be or do whatever you want, but there's still that thing...
It's just ROLE-PLAYING.
Parents don't stop their children from playing Cowboys and Indians and pretending to shoot each other. What makes silly child's games like that any less meaningful?

I don't care if I'm worshiping the devil, summoning demons, killing kittens and burning down an orphanage in D&D. It's all just a GAME, and has no bearing on my actual LIFE.
I'd smack the Bible out of her hands and tell her to stop believing in a work of fiction. Albeit a GOOD one, I still don't believe the Bible is anything more than a series of made-up stories to get people to believe in Christianity and understand the religion and its messages better. It's not a bad idea to try to live your life by the messages of the Bible, taking it literally usually ends up working out pretty badly.

Those of you who clicked on this hoping to see a crazy rant from me about how D and D is devil worship, then HA HA suckers. But please, do stick around.

I need new ears... partially because i tore mine out to get away from this conversation i was having. I was minding my own business with a few friends playing D and D, when the head of teh Christian club walks in, pushes the graph paper and figures off the table and says "I have just saved your souls." She then went on for about ten minutes about how playing D and D was devil worship. She said something about magic, and the deities and stuff, i don't remember, cause it was about that time i had an aneurysm and passed out.

Now, some rules, this is NOT to turn into a discussion about how ALL Christians are wacko's just the nutty ones. And also, i would like to hear some INTELLIGENT conversation about whether or not her point has any merit. Lets try to stay civil here people (i know she certainly didn't, not when she stomped on my mage figurine) What is your best or worst experience playing D and D too (this was my second worst)
[HEADING=3]You must train. Hone your skills to combat such menace. Become an avenger of the night and seek justice for this wrongdoing![/HEADING]

Or just talk to her about how she ruined your game, and how rude it was to interrupt your merriment to enforce her religious standards in a secular setting.

Just asking a question to any Christians: If god is infallible, and created everything, he must have created Lucifer, true? But how is it that if he is indeed infallible, that something he created is referenced as something that works against god?

Well there is some merit to thier arguement if you look at it from thier POV. In D&D you choose a god to worship. Without some understanding of how this works they believe that you are putting your faith into these imaginary gods.

as a christian myself, i can say, no there is no merit to what she is saying, and she probably is insane or misinterpreting a passage from the bible.

Edit:eek:n choosing your own god, way back Christianity tried to make those who worshiped a different god to worship their God, or allow them to be enslaved, but not call them devil worshipers.

It's true. Your children, like it or not, are attracted in their weaker years to the occult. And a game like D&D fuels their imagination and makes them feel "Special" while drawing them deeper and deeper into the bowels of EL DIABLO.
I feel so sorry for anyone that didn't get this little tidbit =3

Well, I'm glad that most gamers with religious views and a sense for D&D and whatnot can discuss this civilly. I was half-expecting a flaming thread.

You have to remember that way back in Medieval times, bards would share stories of Knights slaying Dragons and the wicked tyrant falling by the rising force of good lead by wizards (Especially the tale of Merlin and his Apprentice Arthur). These stories were told by people who had a die hard religious belief in God and Jesus, and were fabled in their stories as Holy Avengers and Messengers of God. The people who TOLD them had even stronger beliefs in God, and told them in marvel and to send a religious message to the masses.

People then needed it when faith would dwindle in the Dark Ages, when plagues, droughts and poverty were such an ugly factor (not saying they still aren't today, but that for another thread).

So for her to wreck your stuff and casting away Fantasy to "save your souls"... Remember how tales of Fantasy saved the souls of thousands upon thousands of people with fading faith (and undying boredom).

I actually would want such a thing to happen as then you could just laugh in her face and explin how stupid she is! But as 40-85% of the swedish population don't give a rats ass about religion these things won't happen as then they would really be social outcasts. But I guess I would just rage and push her away (f she is annoying as hell I don't see a problem with pushing them) screaming at her and yelling HELL SATAN! Then if you have lockers in your school then you could to what my friends did: Glue pentagrams on it! :D

And no her points are not valid at all. I don't play or havn't even looked at a DnD board but doesn't you use 6 sets of dice and if all of those get their highest number (6) it turns out to be 666 and as we all know 666 = Diablo II
But hey what do I know? :/

Then pointed out DND is about good defeating evil.
But D&D is about traveling to fantastic locations, meeting interesting people, and killing them so you can take their stuff.

I would print out Confessions of a Dungeons & Dragons Addict [http://www.mjyoung.net/dungeon/confess.html] and give it to her the next time she tries to interrupt your game.
Or, if you could stomach it, approach her along the lines of "I was thinking about what you said, so I looked into it. I found this article, but there's some stuff I don't really understand, so I was wondering if you could go over it with me." Then watch her discomfort/disbelief/rage as she reads a Christian defending D&D.

just ignore them? she's lucky I wasn't there, I would have given her about a million reasons why she's wrong, and probably made her cry (I'm apparently very good at that...).
Teach me. I've got a Christian Infestation in my German class.

First off I'd like to thank Soushi for not generalizing this to all Christians, as I am one myself. I never really got involved with any of the deities in any of my sessions and honestly never cared. There's nothing wrong about Dungeons and Dragons if there's nothing wrong with Lord of the Rings or [Insert popular fantasy movie/book] in my opinion.

For your enjoyment...

I have never played DnD however I have always wanted to.. I cannot possibly imagine it leading to devil worshiping.. Maybe lack of sleep and potentially lack of sun however devil worshiping handbook it is not.

Hmmm I vaugely remember hearing somewhere that Lucifer was a desciple of Christ who betrayed him(and therefor God), although I'm probably wrong. If I am, then look at it like this: Satan was created as a test. Heaven was put in place to reward those who were good, able to resist Satan's temptation. So I guess in a way, Satan just represents the negative qualities of our selves, and that God wants to see if we can over come them.

I will argue that her statement are not defendable this way. There are two types of religious filosofy: 1) religious filosofy, 2) Good religious filosofy (And yes, there is a types. The difference being in religious filosofy you can practicly say whatever you want and say it's filosofy. But the valuble stuff is in Good filosofy wich have standards. the 3 most important ones are -consistensy. -koherence (I think thats how you write it)and- argument.
If this christians argumants are of the kind that has been thrown at DnD for years than it's the kind that is easely declared irational. Irational arguments are not good arguments. When arguments are not good, then the standard for what is good filosofy is not met. Therefore her proclaimation is of the same filosofical value as the rambling of a drunk five-year-old.
Shit man, apologies if you're first language isn't English...
BUT DAMN, SPELLING.

OT: Ever heard of Jack Chick? He's got a hilarious tract about D&D from his earlier years. Look it up, great read.

Gah... I HATE people like that. It really bugs me how people take stuff like this WAY too seriously. It's just a GAME people!

You COULD just ignore them... or do the same thing to them and see how THEY feel about it...

That person had a bad case of what i like to call "ignorant christian". They run around bashing things like dnd because someone told them it was evil. Ive asked a few of these people what they knew about dnd... they knew it was a game and there was magic. After explaining that dnd is mostly a framework to create an interactive story (which doesnt even HAVE to include magic) they began to feel silly (although im sure if you did it to a stranger they would stubbornly ignore you) and agreed that the game wasnt evil. Im sure with some reworking of the classes you could even replay some bible storys. Have them tell you its evil while your doing that LOL.
Also if they wanted to save you im sure anybody would have been alot more willing to listen if they sat down and joined you rather than ruining your game.
