That's because it IS devil worship along with the radio, rock n roll, drinking, and television.
DUH

You cannot win when you debate an obvious idiot
Uh, no Mormon I've ever met has said D&D is devil worship, and I'm Mormon. I've played D&D since I was 10 and have met a decent number of Mormons who also play. I think the word you were looking for is simply 'idiot'.
Sorry I've had the exact opposite experience.
Well then, sorry you encountered some people who have no idea what their church actually teaches on the subject of RPGs (hint: nothing). People like that give more reasonable people a bad name.

Well I lead worship (the music) for my church youth group, and I like D&D. How about that?

Some people get pretty crazy and think all of this fun stuff is devil worship. They need to chill out. D&D is just a game.

Seriously, if that is the view of that one person, then it is pretty obvious that she knows VERY LITTLE about her religion, as D&D firstly is a game, and therefore not real and secondly if there is religious iconography to be found doesn't that make the player more knowledgeable about religion rather than to be sacrilegious?

Some people are impressionable. Very impressionable. And some Christians can get pretty defensive (mostly the old, old, old ones). People as a whole tend to judge something based on ignorance, then twist the information to support their point.

Christians aren't perfect, nor do they claim to be. Some people made a mistake driven by defensive but ignorant action, and it's still kind of around.

But she is wrong. The thing about D&D is that it allows for such freedom that if someone wanted to incorporate their Satan worship into the game, they can. It does not mean that it is incorporated into D&D itself, because it simply is not.

And no, not all Christians are like that. In fact, most aren't. They aren't nearly as closed-minded as everyone thinks.

I'm a Christian and am an avid player of D&D. You aren't worshiping Satan or sacrificing goats in your friend's basement; you are using your imagination to have fun in a make-believe world. Most of the Christians I know pretty much agree with this (one of my church leaders plays D&D with me occasionally)

Those holier-than-thou mentality people aren't real Christians. I could rant and rant about this, but I'll spare the wall of text. Let's just say I'm a transcendentalist anti-dogma catholic (oxymoron, i know) that wants to shoot some orcs in the face with an enchanted masterwork longbow that gets an additional 1d6 lightning damage to each hit.

Just ignore her. It's not worth the time or sinking to her level.

My dad's a rector's warden and me and the sibs all play dnd, and a dozen other RPG systems. Not all Christians are deranged (any more than normal) and honestly I get the hardest time from deranged pacifists.

I remember one e-mail that I got. Someone had joined the Gamers Guild of my university apparently hoping for scrabble, and walked in on a tabletop war game. (She didn't specify which one.)So she wrote this e-mail calling us violent, sociopaths who obviously all believed in violence as a way to solve the worlds problem and basically a lot of other very insulting stuff about ruining society. No mention of religion. I was really upset for a couple of days. It's not fun to be stereotyped, especially as something bad, but don't do it back.

Meh, just make it clear to her that her antics aren't making her any friends or any converts. Also explain how rude and inappropriate her behavior is. Try to do it in a constructive way if possible.

Religious people can be cooky that way. Just tell her to go away, or possibly get your mates to play along with it and the next time she comes around you all go "Hallelujah, we're saved. Praise the Lord" and such. Then her work is done :)
Slightly on-topic, I've been gaming on and off with devout catholic siblings for maybe 10 years, and when I say devout I mean real devout: Church every sunday and the brother works for the catholic and has lived in a monastery as a monk. Their parents even hosted several of our roleplaying events and the siblings played roleplaying games with the kids at the catholic church childrens events.
Now those people are respectable religious people

If Elvira ran D&D...it'd be called Double D&D /bad joke

OT: I guess you could say "How would you like to meet Jesus face to face?"

We used to play D&D extensively on Scout camping trips. However, the church we were based out of told us we had to stop becasue it was devil worship. Of course, that certainly didn't stop us. Ironically, and no offense Macgyvercas, but the church was Catholic. I'm not saying that all Catholic churches are anti-D&D, but ours certainly was. It is silly though, since it is a fictional game and doesn't necessarily represent the ideologies of the persons playing it. I'm certainly not a katana wielding Drow warlord (even though I would like to be, so that basically negates what I said about it not representing ideologies.)
What I really meant by "Catholic Church" was the Vatican's stance, because that's the highest Church authority. Though it does suck that your church was a jerk about D&D

Just asking a question to any Christians: If god is infallible, and created everything, he must have created Lucifer, true? But how is it that if he is indeed infallible, that something he created is referenced as something that works against god?
Hmmm I vaugely remember hearing somewhere that Lucifer was a desciple of Christ who betrayed him(and therefor God), although I'm probably wrong. If I am, then look at it like this: Satan was created as a test. Heaven was put in place to reward those who were good, able to resist Satan's temptation. So I guess in a way, Satan just represents the negative qualities of our selves, and that God wants to see if we can over come them.
Lucifer was an angel who thought he could do a better job of running things than God and turned against Him. I'm not entirely certain if he was kicked out of heaven before or after he raised an army to challenge God. (A third of the angels, I think.)

(Judas was the disciple who turned Jesus over for 30 pieces of silver.)

On another note, "Satan" means "adversary". While now-a-days he's often framed as God's adversary, if you look at the book of Job, Satan pops by and God doesn't tell him to GTFO. Satan isn't presented as God's adversary, but Man's, sort of like a prosecuting attorney.
(But then you get to the argument that being a lawyer makes Satan evil. =P)

Gosh, I thought this died in the eighties too!

I'm a Christian and played D&D. This is nonsense. It's simply a group looking for something to demonize so they can feel superior. She doesn't care about your soul for your sake; she cares about your soul *for hers*. It's the ultimate form of Christian hypocrisy.

If she comes back, tell her "No game of dungeons and dragons can separate me from the Grace of God. No sin, no fault. Christ made payment on my behalf, and where he is, I will be also."

That should shut her up. Christians like her talk a big game about grace, but they don't want to admit what it really means. They're too scared too. They lose power and control.

Then pointed out DND is about good defeating evil.
But D&D is about traveling to fantastic locations, meeting interesting people, and killing them so you can take their stuff.
But, you don't actually have to kill anything. Charm spells and charisma end battles just as easily as Fireball and nunchucks. For that matter, you don't have to travel to fantastic locations or meet interesting people either. It's the very nature of the imagination to take us to the fantastic places, fighting ridiculous monsters for loot and fame, not the game itself.

All right so I wasn't too far off.

So pretty much what I said, but better worded with examples. Good job :)
