I'm interested to see more research into just how intelligent whales are. If they're approaching our level, of course we can't bloody eat them. We wouldn't, upon discovering intelligent aliens, start eating them, so clearly 'they aren't human' doesn't fly as an excuse. Of course, they could be just as dumb as other animals. And certainly taking a few select parts and chucking the rest shouldn't be allowed for any animal, simply because it's completely goddamn inefficient.

I don't like Whale Wars as a show, the Captain treats his crew as shit. But I do like what they stand for.

I was in Australia a few years back and I visited a shut down whaling station. People don't whale for food, or the fat for car oil. What they farm it for is for a couple millilitres of a particular substance that they use to put perfume in. Then they take the fat for car oil, then dump the rest back into the sea. That's what makes me sick about the whole thing. So yeah, I really don't like whaling, particularly because the vast majority of them are endangered species.

First off, ambergris is hardly even used anymore and only the sperm whale has it.
Also, the biggest threat to the sperm whale (which numbers over 100.000) is not the yearly 10 or so the Japanese hunt, but entagelement in regular fishing nets.

Secondly, the whale that is hunted is not the endangered whales.
Do you honestly think we are that bloody moronic?
No, we mostly hunt the Mink whale. It is not in danger, and we do not hunt it to bloody extinction.

I don't believe animals do deserve equal rights. You're right, that is plain silly. That doesn't mean it's morally OK to kill them in utterly vile ways for no reason. Also, the problem with whale hunting is that a lot of these species ARE endangered, so if we allow whaling to continue, we will "destroy all of them on earth".

In said boat crash they requested help from the ship they just drove in front of, the whalers where uneasy about going over (more likely a language problem), they did stop however. The whalers decided to go over and try to help...only to be met with "STAY BACK" and "WE WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED"...moments after the SOS was sent.

One of the tactics of whaling supporters is to compare whales with cows, pigs, and other domesticated animals. The problem is cows, pigs, etc. have been bred for thousands of years for human use, whales haven't. Their numbers are still decimated from the commercial whaling of the 20th century because they are such slow breeders. I think it's irresponsible to tolerate what is clearly a commercial whaling operation when we know their numbers are so low.

I think you missed the point entirely. Humans ARE animals. Just immensely smarter animals. And the more effective animal eats the less effective one. Sure, we have our engineering, our religions, and elephants mourn their dead, and I can't perform long division or solve differential equations...come to think of it, I'm an atheist too. And I've never tried my hand at engineering.

I applaud the guys because the whales are endangered and are some of the primary predators for plankton and krill.

If we lose the whales, we have overabundance of plankton/krill which can basically kill large portions of our oceans.

So whether it's a waste or not, if it makes it unprofitable for the japanese whalers, who've shown they have basically no interest in conservation or ecological consequences, over profit, good.

Whaling is no more unsustainable than any other form of hunting.
The whale that is mainly hunted, the minke whale, is not endangered.

I'm sorry, but this irked me

1. im a vegetarian and my whole family eats meat, i dont ***** at them for eating meat nor do i do it to anyone else because i have my reasons for being vegetarian and their personal, i dont expect anyone to become a vegetarian for any other reason than because they chose to

a lot of vegetarians dont push it on others (for some reason people who eat meat get all defensive and tend to believe a vegetarian is judging them/trying to change them) and those vegetarians who do try to change people tend to be asshats that other vegetarians dont want to be associated with (PETA)

2. whaling is illegal internationally, they hunt whale's under the guise that its for scientific purposes, but they blatantly box up the whale meat at port to sell - so their whaling illegally and the sea shepard trys to stop them and bring it to peoples attention through the show

3. Some people (like me) think that slaughtering anything is wrong, because we have a conscious, and while some people can slaughter with a clear conscious, some cant

4. The people on the sea shephard have said before that their willing to give their lives for their cause, you may think that's stupid but it isn't to them

5. chinese/japanese/koren fishers tend to be some of the most ruthless; hunting dolphins, whales, cutting fins off live sharks, etc. and even though its illegal, they do it becasue it gives them products to sell that are illegal and fetch a lot of money

I watched the first season, but i couldn't anymore because it was too graphic for me, i think what their doing is good but thats it - im not a die hard supporter or anything
