Nothing's going to happen on 12/21/12. The world's not going to end just because a dead society said that the gods will come down and kill us all.(ok, not really sure how they said the world was going to end.)

When the time comes, I should make a shirt that on the front says:
2000
2012

and underneath that:
I Survived The Apocalypse TWICE!!

Make a million bucks right there.

On that day Jesus and Buddah will disco on the moon causing cookies to rain from the heavens and a good time shall be had by all. There will be a big party and Cthulu will bring cake.

If enough people use it as an excuse to go batshit crazy, maybe we can all avoid prosecution in the days following December 21st. I say we all take to the streets, do whatever we want, and for years scientists will be talking about the strange phenomena that occured. Who's with me?

The people who are sure that nothing will happen will not be prepared and will become mutants that prey on each other.
Or we'll pray on those who did prepare themselves, either way, we all lose.

Or nothing happens because as a few posts and cited references say;
1. Mayan Calendar, just resetting to 1, all of their calendars were on cylces, the long count is just the biggest.

2. The "WebBot" bullcrap gets its data from the internet. Including blogs and forums. Let's just think about the reliability here. Also, how can a collective of people unaware of the future be used to determine it?

3. Nostradamus. His prophecies are so vague, my 3rd birthday should have been the apocalypse going off them.

4. The chinese coin-toss chart. It's a coin-toss, correlated to historcial events.

5. The U.S. Presidential hand-off. You know, because the U.S. is that important, or most of us like to think so. Though, radicals from either party are certainly capable of world-ending supidity.

6. MOST LIKELY APOCALYPSE: Self-fulfilling prophecy, all the people freaking out about a fake apocalypse do a lot of crazy crap that has the same effect.

7. WHAT WILL ACTUALLY HAPPEN: Nothing.

IN ADDITION: Noting all the Christmas posts... that's the day Robo-Santa is activated.

An explanation:

The Mayans had calanders that counted down, correct? and it ended in 2012, right? So clearly the years stop after that because the world ends, yes?

Nope, they just have countdown clocks for calanders. They had two or three beforehand, and at the end of every on, they had a big new-calander celebration and restarted. It never occured to them to have a constant one, they never got round to it, on account of being eraditcated at whatnot.

Had they survived to 2012, we'd all watched the televised festivities and the Mayans would make a new calander.

I suppose they thought linearly like this because they also TELL THEIR HISTORY IN LENGTHS OF STRING!!!! I kid you not, they actually do. It's pretty cool, a length of rope with different knots and colours in it indicates diffrent times and events. Awesome. I bet they had scraggly ones made of bits of Grass as a Wikipedia equivilant

Some lives will end (like starving people in third world nations and soldiers in combat), but most won't. This is just another over-hyped doomsday date like January 1, 2000 or June 6, 2006 was.

I'm looking forward to the 22nd December 2012 when I can take the piss out of all the conspiracy theorist weirdoes.
Ditto.

I am sick of all the "end of the world" theories though.
Same. Kinda wish the world would end just to get the fuck rid of them : \

I think that the world will end. Not because of some silly ancient prophecy, though. I'm talking people will start freaking out and burning things because they think something bad will happen that probably won't.

As you can see I'm new here so I dunnno if this has been a thread or not. But I'm just curious as to what you think will ACTUALLY happen then. My personal opinion is it will be a Y2K type event. A lot of hype and people freaking out buying apocalypse survival kits and what not only to find out....nothing happens.
Pretty much this. It's gonna be massive freakout - nothing more.
It's some kinda Texas psychobilly freakout that's what it is!

Welcome! Welcome to Escapistmagazine.com! You have chosen, or been chosen, to relocate to one of our finest remaining Internet Utopias. I thought so much of Escapistmagazine.com, that I elected to establish my administration, here, in the Forums, so thoughtfully provided by our Moderators. I am proud to call Escapistmagazine.com my home. And so, whether you are here to stay, or passing through to parts unknown, welcome, to Escapistmagazine.com. It's safer here.

Now that that's out of the way, it'll be like Y2K all over again. But this time there may or may not be the chance of quantum zombies.
I sense a valve fanboy?

I'm not worried. Of course if anything did happen, I would be safe in my NBCZT proof basement.

Best. Apocalypse. Ever.

But really, nothing will happen. We'll all go through our day regularly, go to bed, wake up the next morning, and all the people who thought something would happen will be kicking themselves.

You know what will happen? People shuffling their feet and saying "I never really believed it anyway" on the 22nd of December.

"It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine!"

In answer to your question, NOTHING! Nothing out of the ordinary anyway. It's just a date on the calender, just like March 3, 1959 or Feb 1, 2005 or April 6 1867.

BTW Welcome to the Escapist. You should feel lucky, nobody welcomed me when I joined.

Or perhaps all the conspiracy nuts are really, really disappointed. Probably embarrassed because everyone else will be laughing at them.
