Why does everyone assume that L4D will be the downfall of Valve? L4D is awesome and is just another notch in the belt of the great games Valve has put out over the years. I guess people are just upset that a game company isn't keeping one of it's promises...

...like that hasn't happened before

Misspelling the word "intellectual". Possibly the purest definition of irony ever?

Nah, Valve's distinguishing characteristic is making extremely high quality games and that trend has only been continued with Left 4 Dead.

Besides it's not that mindless and shooty because of the heavy focus on teamwork.

supreme unleaded i do see your point. l4d was good, but valve might follow the smell of money. i have half-life and the orange box also l4d and l4d didnt have that valve touch or that special something valves puts in the games like half-life. so i see your point.

jeesus, do i really need to explain this further, you may not be a terrable person, but all the whiny twats are.
And as you've already said, "LEFT 4 DEAD WAS A GOOD GAME, BUT THE PEOPLE WERENT". And I'm a person. And I play Left 4 Dead. I disagree. I played the valve box first, I hated it all.

I realy like L4D. I dont apreciate you saying that you dont think L4D fans are intellectual, but I respect your oppinion.

L4D just appeals more to me than half life, wich I felt was to generic.

Oh wellz.

We all have our oppinions.

edit: You know what, I cant pretend to be civil about this.

I thought Half Life was a load of $%#@ and I thought Portal was boring as anything.
I felt that TF was a COD or GOW wanabee, and I thought Valve was just a sespool of shite.

Then L4D came along.

And I loved it.

So I don't apreciate you bashing L4D fans just because you dont like L4D.

I dont like Half Life, you dont like L4D.

Were different. I like action, you like whatever Half Life is. (Puzzles?)

I dont bash you, so please dont bash me,
Guessing you have an xbox...

Of course it hasn't ruined valve counter strike and tf2 have no story or puzzeles, but they were still great games. Besides there are parts of l4d that require you to think, the hold out finales; who guards what angle, who takes turret, who gets the pipe bomb who gets the molotov and what do you do if some one get badly wounded and has no mmore painpills or aid kits. although on the lower difficulties you don't need to think about some of those that much, L4D can be as interlectual as you want to make it. Or at least i think so, as for the twats you sometimes get teamed up with- uh well what can you do? If none of your friends are online then that is a problem, right? I just suppose thats a risk we have to take in order to make the most of this (in my opinion) fantastic game.

Could do with more varity though, maybe veichles? driver, main gunner, passenger gunner, rear gunner? or maybe some sort of non combat role for the 4th person like repair ans healing?

P.S. where the fuck is HL episode 3!

Ok, I apologise about the English thing. Not that it matters, you'll never see this message because you're deleting them all.

But you didn't try to be civil. You stated your opinion, people disagreed, then you called them dumb fucks, on top of stereotyping quite a large group of gamers. Not the actions of someone trying to be civil.

I don't believe Left 4 Dead will ruin Valve. I still play it now and again. I did tell the lead developer of Left 4 Dead 1&2 at Comic-con that after playing the L4D2 Demo and beating zombies to death with Cricket Bats and Fire Axes that I am looking forward to L4D2 in its upcoming release.

(I believe that the person their was the lead developer when I played the L4D2 demo)

When Valve does a multiplayer game, they focus entirely on fun and nothing on story, which is exactly how a multiplayer game should be done. Counter Strike and Team Fortress have no back stories, just perfectly polished gameplay, and that goes the same for Left 4 Dead.

The only reason L4D appears to be appealing to a younger audience to you is because you're probably paying attention to the XBox 360 version. I play the PC version, and I find that most people playing the game are 20-30 years old. In fact, my usual team on L4D consists of 3 very intelligent 20+ people who are very fun to play with.

Sure, L4D may not be "intuecual", but no Valve multiplayer games are. I have full faith that Valve will continue their excellent, deep storytelling skills in Half Life 2 Episode 3.

I liked L4D, but L4D2 just seems wrong so early... still seems lacking to me... and I don't care what the fanboys say, the new characters suck.

What I mean by this is, before ld4 came out Valve's fans where I guess you could call them intuecuals (spelling?) of gaming, what I mean by that is these people (including myself) like a good story, some nice action but not full on action, use good teamwork, and needed to have the mental capacity to solve a strew of puzzles.

These gamers are generaly people in there 20s and 30s, they are smart and not annoying.
Ok, first of all how would you know this? Half-Life is a single player game, and as such you don't know other people that play it - or at least how they play it. Besides which, Valves fan's before L4D would have extended to those playing Counter-Strike and Team Fortress; your telling me their fans are intellectuals? Don't make me laugh...

Now comes Left 4 Dead, now every Valve fan will still check this game out but many will not like it as much as previos Valve games because of a lack of story, little varity, and no more puzzles. Now Left 4 Dead may still be a good game but never as good as the Half Life series.
Ok, that is complete and utter bullshit and you know it. Valves "fans" will obviously have enjoyed the game else it would not have sold as well as it did. Besides which, I didn't hear of any controversy from Valve fans when the game was released - your just making up rubbish in order to back your meaningless generalizations. Left 4 dead is a multi-player game, Half-life is not. L4D has no story for a purpose - Half-life has one for a purpose; I for one (having played the Half-Life games before L4D) found Left 4 Dead to be the superior game for a number of reasons.

But to many non Valve fans, this game is a gift from god, these gamers enjoy non stop action, generaly no story, and some may enjoy teamwork. Now nothing is wrong with this type of gamer, except one thing, more than half of them are WHINNEY, ANNOYING, TWATS.

These gamers are generaly in the ages from 5 to 20 (most), and are generaly high pitched voices whining everytime they die because they ran away from the group.
Ok since I'm in that age group, enjoyed L4D more than Half-Life etc, I'm going to take that personally because your insulting me, my friends and a whole host of people. I like games with story, hell, my favourite game this generation is one with arguably the best story (of this gen) Lost Odyssey. That doesn't mean I can't like BOTH Left 4 Dead AND Lost Odyssey now does it?

Now this may not describe every gamer that likes this genra but this seems to be the majority.
No it isn't - prove it.

Now you may ask, well how do these gamers destroy an entire company.

Now lets talk buisness, lets say (completely hypotheticaly) a game like Half Life 2 sells 1 million, this is the number of the intuecual gamers.

Now lets say a game like Left 4 Dead sells 2 million copies, many of these gamers are the latter, while some may be the intuecual gamer, the majority is the action gamer.

So if you sell twice as much on one game then another, your going to follow the money and make more games like this.
So everyone that bought Half-Life 2 is an intellectual? Again I find that amazingly stupid, as I type this I'm starting to believe you are in fact a troll. Half-Life is, at it's core, a mainstream game - it appeals to a wide number of people - the same goes for Left 4 Dead. Therefore the audiences are going to be the same - everybody.

Now I am NOT afraid that Half Life 2 epsiode 3 will be hurt because of this, but what about after Half Life 2 episode 3. I am afraid that valve will start following the money and cater to the 10 year old who think that "action games are teh shits man, KILL KILL KILL."
This quote lends itself to mockery - I don't even have to type anything more...

I have already seen people hate Half Life because they played L4D first and said there wasn't enough action.
Well people generally do expect action in a first person shooter...that just means Half-Life isn't a good shooter and doesn't balance the line between puzzle game and shooter very well.

I am just worried that Valve will follow the money and slowly start ditching their creativity to more games like L4D, I may be right I may be wrong but i think Valve is slowly starting to deteriorate.
Yes, they make one game and suddenly "OMG!!11 Valve suck!1 They didnt make a Half-Life game, they make a stupid game for idiots because it has no puzzles!!".

Step down from your podium you elitist. The Half-Life games are not primarily played by intellectuals anyway, but aside from that you just make up generalizations to support your views.

I resent that accusation sir. I am 16 years of age and most certainly enjoy story-centred games far more than just "gunz lol".

Look at Steam for God's sake. It's dominated by Valve and Valve players, and Steam also happens to be filled with a more than fair share of non-intellectuals. Look at Counterstrike, the poster child for online dickery, which came out long before L4D and Half Life 2. Not many would call the Counterstrike community "a reasonable and well-adjusted group of intelligent and anti-homophobic people".

OK, that was a little harsh, but I don't think we need to be worrying about it any time soon.
No, no, that was perfect. Really, it was. I think this guy thinks he's a great gamer and is awesome but has gotten his ass kicked in L4D and now he hates it. His post has got that whiny self-righteous tone to it that is best associated with those ass hats from Whale Wars. And he's probably still made Valve cares more about L4D2 than making new seesaw or "Hide the door behind a pile of rubbish" puzzles for HL2:E3.
Excuse me, I'm terrable at Left 4 Dead now, you are completely wrong. i'm one of the best in my group and always seem to be either the last survivor or the one that helps the team up when THEY get THEIR ass handed to them.
Key words "I think". As in, "My opinion on this matter with no necessarily any evidence to support or influence it other than this guys ranting."

Oh, and, for the record, I think you are the "dumb fuck" and the "whiny twat" to use your own words. I also found HL2 to be an incredibly boring game. None of the characters were of the slightest interest to me, and neither the story nor the 'running around the room following whomever is talking so I can hear them clearly' was any fun. I didn't like the semi-linear levels where half the time the exit to each little area was hidden behind a pile of barrels or trash or whatever. Yeah it's really brilliant level design when the only usable door is hidden behind a pile of boxes for no reason whatsoever. Hell, it's a miracle I got past the incredibly boring opening sequence or the unbelievably annoying watercraft level. Ravenholm had some fun shooty bits, but I quickly grew bored of shooting giant saw blades at zombies, and the ammo was in far too short supply. I found Halo to be a far more fun game, but I'm sure that landed me in your 'unintellectual' (And that's how it's spelled) book.

And while I don't consider myself too much of an intellectual (as I tend to think of bearded, pipe smoking fellows who read too much into things, though this probably isn't the image of an intellectual for everyone else), I'm certainly not of the dull minded proletariat, and actually quite smart. Smart enough to tell you that if people are entitled to their own opinions, and that if they want to dislike a game *you* like, they're not idiots. They have different tastes and probably don't think that they're tastes make them better than everyone else.

I also feel the need to ask you why the hell you keep playing Left 4 Dead with random people when you seem to hate them all so much. I stopped playing because we couldn't play a versus match without making the other team ragequit after the first map, so we entirely stopped playing with them, and went and played against other goons, and before long we all knew each other inside and out and it got a bit stale and most of us decided for a change with other games. So, why, if you hate everyone matchmaking includes you with, do you continue to use matchmaking? I mean, if you touch the pot and burn your finger you don't stick your entire hand in it.

I seem to be one of few who enjoyed Left 4 Dead and Half Life equally, they both capture two of my most annoying moods. My savant-ish "Gaming has gone down hill, how about a bit of depth" mood has three games: Indigo Prophecies, Half-Life, and Portal. Those are the three main ones, anyway. My second "God, I'm sick of thinking, I've had a long day, how about MINDLESS fun?" mood includes Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike, and Call of Juarez: BiB. Mass Effect rests squarely in the middle.

We don't all stick to the same type all the time, do we? I know that after a long day working or studying that mindless shit is what I crave.

I also giggle at those who insult the games and make a big deal about how bad they think they are, or the community. Who honestly takes life so seriously that they have to transparently reflect their frustration on a medium of entertainment?

And it's spelled "Intellectual".

No i think more people would look to try out other games by them. for me i got turned on to the orange box because of left 4 dead. have you ever seen how teamwork based left for dead is even if it is "intellectually" less stimulating then TF2. both are good games, go play portal and be happy :)

In the end there are far many worse games to direct hatred towards - Valve tries hard with it's games, while some companies apparently don't. Case in point: Spark's game, Turning Point. Never play it under any circumstances.

L4D was great as long as you played with your friend and not randoms. And make sure you don't play with those friends.
