Well pretty much Team Fortress 2.
Class updates, new maps, new game modes, all for the low, low price of $0.
So yeah, that.
Although it's not by definition, DLC typically means it's an optional supplement to a game, by all current uses of the term. TF2 doesn't really count.
Well with the way most publishers are pushing DLC these days, they seem less and less optional as time goes on...
DLC is ALWAYS an option. You control your wallet, not the game companies. The company can make half a game on disc, & the other half DLC. You would still have a choice to buy the DLC or not. Personally, I suggest not buying any game like that to show them they won't make as much money if they do that. Now, you can say "DLC isn't optional IF you want to enjoy all aspects of a game". That would be correct.
I'm with the OP. I want every aspect of my game to be on physical media. I want to be able to bring it with me to a friend's house, play it with him there, loan it to him, sell it to someone else, and even :gasp: play it on a 2nd console without having to ask the company, (via the internet,) may I pretty please play the fun thing I bought?
I bought an add-on pack for Fallout 3 on a disc. I was half way through my 2nd time playing through the game. I was only on level 15 when I decided to check out Point Lookout. I got my butt handed to me. I went back to the main game, leveled up some more, but lost interest before I hit level 20, but hey, at least I can resell my DLC on a disc if I ever want to.
"Keys to the City" DLC for Crackdown was hella fun, but it was free too.
