It's mostly Dantes character redesign. Many people dislike his new look for one reason or another and the trailers didnt exactly show an interesting personality either.

(I myself gotta beat the first DMCs before i even consider this either way, stopped like 3/4ths into DMC1 and have yet to beat DMC3+4)

The root of the problem is the looks. I think it would've been a better move if they just made anoter DMC/Bayonetta and make the character look like that. But no, they remade Dante and named the game DMC 5. It's pretty much a mockery. It's like making a remake of Bayonetta called Bayonetta 2 with a very refined-looking old woman.

That's why even if I liked Bioshock: Infinite in all its glory, I would've liked it if they named it after their original title "Project Icarus" simply because MOST people think Bioshock = Rapture. Some people just never think Bioshock is all about different philosophical utopias as if they never batted an eye on the FF series.

No hate here.
Well, no more than I've always had for the series.

So he's no longer a metrosexual anime hero, and people get mad.

No, far from it but it was a different feel. The other games had terrible jokes, puns and voice acting in general that made it the enjoyable and campy kind of bad. This one says "fuck" a lot.
Ah, I guess I can understand that. Again I've never really played the other games so I had no idea what sort of players they would appeal to. This new one seems very clearly to be aimed at 12 year old boys.

Makes you wonder: why use an established name and then deviate so much from the predecessors as to alienate precisely those potential buyers who might otherwise be attracted by the name? I mean the people who eventually buy this won't be buying it because of the name. They'll be buying it because it gets a reputation around the playground for having naughty words, and it won't matter what it's called. I can only imagine the name is used to generate funding.

All I can suggest is go back and enjoy the originals, declare this one mentally non-cannon, and for goodness sake don't buy it.

Needs more Vergil.

So far, I haven't seen anything resembling DMC.

No, I've no problem with the character's new look, he just doesn't act like Dante.

Dante in old DMC = Sup, baby?

Dante in new DMC = No! Fuck you!

Such rapier wit :D

But honestly, as long as the combat is up to par, there's no way it could be worse than DMC2.

Well, in case you havnt been following things, let me sum it up for you.

1)Some of us would like an actual sequel to tie some stuff up. Rebooting the series(which is what this originally was. Not sure how much it holds true now) kind of fucks that up.

2)We know what Dante was like before. Its called DMC 3.

3)This new guy just straight up isnt Dante. We like him as a fun character. Not some emo douch.

4)The Ninja Theory guys pretty much shit all over DMC fans verbally in every interview with the view of, "You're going to have to deal with whatever we do" That doesnt give me confedance that they will respect the source material at all going forward.

It isnt the fact that fans hate change. It's the fact that fans hate change that is done badly.
The good news is that this is set in "an alternate universe" according to Ninja Theory. So if they screw up there is a chance we could go back to good Dante.

I can't help but feel they just tagged on "Devil May Cry Remake" so it will sell more. When a game doesn't really show any semblance to it's predecessors other than "Demons are invading!" I can't help but feel that it should of been a new series like Bayonetta.

I have been enjoying the Devil May Cry franchise for more than a decade. I have invested heavily in the lore and the style of the games.
In the latest game they have rebooted the lore completely and changed the style of the gameplay.
Can you people honestly say you wouldn't be pissed if valve suddenly said "hey we're going to reboot the Half Life series with a Gears of War style main character and Call of Duty style gameplay"?

There are lots of reasons but they can be summed up with this:

Gritty reboot of a previously campy series is NOT cool.

My only gripe is this means the end of the original Dante and his universe. Especially since the story ends with some questions unanswered. Though I've heard someone from Capcom allegedly say that Nero was Vergil's son(makes sense if you ask me).

If by some chance this game increases interest in the older ones and the original Dante comes back then I'll be happy but I highly doubt that will be the case. I think it would have been better if it were a new character in the same world. I know they did it in Devil May Cry 4 but Nero wasn't different enough.

Half Demon/Half Angel Dante.

HALF ANGEL!!!

hAlF aNgEl!!!

HAAAAALF ANGEEEEEL!!!

GRAWEGHSDGHESRHOJ~~ -cries-

Frankly, I had no problem with anything until they said that, because that destroys every chance of it fitting into canon continuity. I could take his hair having been black once and him looking like an awkward douchebag. Even half demons can have that awkward teenage phase, I told myself.

But then... half angel. -sighs-

Basically for the same reason I hated that Prince of Persia game where the characters looked like they stepped out of a Final Fantasy game; the aesthetic is completely different from what fans are used to and want.

Nothing wrong with not liking it when a favorite series goes in a direction you don't like; you are allowed to be picky about the things you enjoy, after all.

I'm sure every complaint you disagree with sounds like whining. How about some constructive criticism? You know, to try and make an actual discussion.
No not every.

Only this one. Especially when I change DMC into Batman and Ninja Theory into Christopher Nolan. Its funny how every aspect of his argument more or less makes a perfect transition.

Want some constructive criticism? How about "Being a fan doesn't make your opinion more important". Yeah you are going to have to deal with Christ... sorry Ninja Theory not respecting your image of Batm.... I mean Dante. The quality of their work will stand on its own. Not on how much it pandered to the fanboys.
He makes sense, you don't. Draech is talking about pointless changes and you are just generalising. You haven't discussed any thing, all you've done is gave this childish response to just be annoying.
Good job going ad hominum there. Cant ague the case then call him childish. My argument is more solid that anything you have come with. You just attack me rather than what I am saying.

Fact is there are people out there complaining that the new batman isn't true to its comic book roots. So its it a perfect analogy.

Ninja Theory makes an interpretation of DMC
Christopher Nolan makes an interpretation of Batman

Both have major changes to the main char, key chars, story and setting.

here is the original quote changed to batman instead

Well, in case you havnt been following things, let me sum it up for you.

1)Some of us would like an actual sequel to tie some stuff up. Rebooting the series(which is what this originally was. Not sure how much it holds true now) kind of fucks that up.

2)We know what Batman was like before. Its called Batman Forever.

3)This new guy just straight up isnt Batman. We like him as a fun character. Not some emo douch.

4)Christopher Nolan pretty much shit all over Batman fans verbally in every interview with the view of, "You're going to have to deal with whatever we do" That doesnt give me confedance that they will respect the source material at all going forward.

Notice how point 3 has an even deeper connection in the change from the campy batman movie into the brooding dark batman movie.

If you see this and go "they are nothing alike!" congrats! you have a double standard! You insist that one should be judged by what came before it and dont care when it isn't done on the other.
I don't think you know what I'm arguing. I'm talking about that you said he's whining by making this pointless comparison. Does it bother you personally when someone complains that the character is no longer to their liking? Really, should he stay quiet just for you?

Point 3 to me means his personality changed into something else he finds disappointing. Saying his whining just because disagree is childish behaviour.

I can yes.

Because I have no delusions of my fandom being a deciding factor on the target of my affection. I love Dungeon Deeper, and EA sold the Dungeon Keeper name to a Chinese mmo developer who made a crappy WoW clone out of it. AND I DEAL WITH IT!
They have the freedom to express dissatisfaction with the change. It's disappointing when a series takes a turn into something for no frigging reason. Why don't they just make a new game? Seriously.

Just because you don't mind, doesn't mean everyone else should.

I read DMC as Batman and Ninja Theory as Christopher Nolan.

And then your entire argument just sounded like fanboy whining.

Except, its not a perfect transition. This isn't Christopher Nolan making Batman. This is Michael Bay making Batman. See, Christopher Nolan was known for making great movies, like Memento. Michael Bays high point was The Rock. Nevermind that this is a reboot, and reboots -always- turn out great, don't they? Oh wait.
Saying "LOL FANS DON'T LIKE CHANGE" is dumb. Fans don't care about change, as long as that change is actually. Y'know. Good. Fans don't like bad design choices.
