Actually I've looked at some new anime recently. The Japanese might be making a come back, some of this stuff is looking really good.
Never count them out.
Never count them out.
No, it's more a matter of being "called" so many times on various things and then taking the time to rebut them to be met with nothing but disrespect that I don't bother much anymore when it comes to certain topics. People can either take what I have to say, or leave it.DrVornoff said:[
Thank you for making me feel better about my own massive ego problem. That said, you're not as smart as you think you are. The crap you rattled off was overly simplistic when it wasn't factually inaccurate. You've been called on it, and made no actual attempt to refute the counterarguments, just thumbed your nose. Part of me suspects that this arrogance you put on is an act. If so, it's getting old.Therumancer said:On this thread I spelled out the answer rather directly, people now have it, it's not really my fault if they can't handle, or don't like the truth. I'm hardly anti-anime, but I didn't take the track that the OP wanted which was to more or less knock people that don't like Anime, which is what they were at this point obviously fishing for, and what others visiting this thread came to see. I gave an accurate, and balanced answer, which while true is not what people wanted to hear. There isn't much more to it.
i know that game i just wish i knew a place where i could get it digitalsnowplow said:Personally I don't like Japanese games because they're console exclusives.
Also teenagers. Japs are obsessed with teenagers and the whole growing up phase, and it makes me vomit.
Some are good though. The old Lunar games for sega CD and Playstation had a good storyline and very little shit teen angst and melodrama. Also most old console games are japanese, and people love those games.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going through Ryofu Housen's route in Koihime Musou.
i like to watch some of the older anime and even those look better then what we have over here. I've seen some good stuff we have but they are reruns now and nothing has come to take there placelocke said:I like anime. Some of it is still hand drawn and that's pretty cool to me. It looks better than some of the flash stuff on TV nowadays
I'm not too sure I get what you mean. I guess 'collective genre' threw me off a bit. Considering anime is "animation from Japan" that means it can be horror. If a Japanese animation studio took a horror movie and animated it frame by frame (or made an anime almost exactly like a horror movie), it would be considered anime, but it's not different from a horror movie other than aesthetics. Even though it's animated by a Japanese studio, it still shares too many elements from horror films to not be considered apart of the horror genre.Savagezion said:No, it is. You know like the JRPG is a genre despite they are full of variety as well. It is a collective genre. The point is that they share commonalities with one another that is unique to them. It is a genre of style.z121231211 said:Well if you don't like the aesthetic, then you're not liking a significant part of the game. Though aesthetics are something that grow on you over time, but there's more to Japanese style games than just aesthetic differences. There's a lot of different cliches and cultural things that just put a lot of westerners off in a way I just can't understand, but that's mostly because I've watched anime all my life.
While putting off a game purely on aesthetic is pretty shallow, a game having that aesthetic usually means there's more things that'll put off westerners. And they just learned that "It looks anime" usually means that "kawaii desu ne, weeaboo galore" comes with.
No, just no. There is a HUGE variety of anime and to call it a genre would be like calling Video Games a genre, instead of a medium full of different genres.Savagezion said:Anime is its own genre.
"Foreign Films" is a genre. It is a collective genre. Anime is a genre. So again:
Savagezion said:Some people don't like horror movies yet that is not seen as superficial. Some people don't like anime and that is not superficial. They simply just don't like it. It isn't shallow or superficial any more than someone else's tastes who don't like say action flicks. Hell, I don't like parody movies.
It is a valid critique and I like anime. However, I don't like when they do stuff like the "big tear" or the cats on shoulders crap. I understand why those things exist, I just think they fail at what they are trying to do. I like others though (like exaggerated expressions and such) but I guess my golden rule for anime is: it needs to set a tone and stick to that tone, and many don't do that. Some will be all serious Cowboy Bebop style then go full on Speed Racer out of nowhere.
If this is a superficial complaint, then all matters of taste are superficial.

But that's a weak excuse as I don't know a huge amount of them. I liked them back when I was a teenager myself.
I guess I'm just the wrong target audience. I enjoy darker grittier universes and stories of mighty warriors putting their strength to the test. I love playing rpg games as barbarians and will play as an Orc whenever given a chance. I love reading Conan stories. Generally that awesome testosterone filled male power fantasies that I enjoy are far from what JRPGs, anime and manga offer.
your opinion is void and abjectly racist.
Drakengard is a Japanese rpg... it's an action rpg and it's really darkFieldy409 said:I think the reason I dont like JRPG's is because the stories seem to mainly be about teenager characters.
