Do you assume people on the internet are from the same country as you?

No. I'm from the UK and I tend to assume most people on the web are from the US. But not everyone, that would be silly.

Nope almost never.

Never. Since I'm from Iceland I very rarely see people from Iceland on the Internet. However I do always suspect that most people I see or meet on the internet are either American or British.

I start my post thinking everyone is from California, U.S.A., then before I post I go back through and re-word the whole thing.
I am guilty of this as well. Well, I figure everyone to be from Georgia, USA, but it still applies...

I used to, but then I came here. Once I said something bad about America's school system, for instance (since it's absolutely terrible in every way), but I didn't specify "America," and I got someone defending the school system in ways that made no sense. I later figured out that it was because he was defending the system in his own country, one quite different from ours.

Ever since then I try to specify "America" if I mention something like that.

No. But I have internet friends from all over the world, so I guess, I'm less-inclined to not think that.

It depends what time it is.

If it's 5pm and I'm on here, it's a safe bet the majority of other people signed on are American. If it's 3am, there are probably more people from Europe signed on.

Normally, I look for cues that indicate whether someone is American or not. If I see "bloke" or words spelled with "u's" like colour or favourite, then I know they are from another country.

I used to assume everyone lived on the West Coast, but the last two forums that I've joined and actually frequented (This one included), almost everyone was from the East Coast or the UK, so at least now I'm killing the old habit that everyone lives down the street.

I never have. Until I came to The Escapist, it was very rare to find another Canadian. Usually, people would be American, but I'd find enough Australians (!) that I couldn't always assume the person I was talking to was American.

Sometimes, people on The Escapist say something that clearly indicates their Canadian-ness and I sort of go ":D Hell yes, GO CANADA! <3"

(No offence to any Americans)
I think of this every time I go online... It has never failed me.

Not necesarily. I live in the most isolated large population center in the world, so i don't expect many people to speak or act the same as me.

It's very strange.
I am an American and I picture Escapists as being from the UK as well. As for other websites, the spelling and grammar is usually terrible, so I usually think of them as foreign people who just learned English or unintelligent and/or ignorant Americans.

Although sometimes people use words in a certain way and I can tell where they're from, there's always times when there are no clues and I just assume.

I think that 40% of Internet users are fellow Americans. It's something I have to keep in my mind when posting only-Americans-will-understnad comments.

I assume everyone I speak to on the Escapist is American, unless they use distinct terminology from another country(e.g. saying fizzy drinks instead of soda). I remember being surprised when I found out some escapists were Norwegian/Swedish etc. For the record, I'm English so my answer is no (barely).

Eithr from here or from England or Canada. I never expect people to be from Australia or any other European countries for some reason.
