Well on the Escapist I know there's a fair balance between American and Australian. However I can work out through the language whether or not it's an American or Australian typing even before I check.
For instance Australian's say 'Mum' and American's say 'Mom'... that's a dead giveaway.

Ultimatley I don't really assume anyone is from any country, I just think of them as another Escapist.

I'm from Ireland, and my assumption, if any, is that they are NOT from the same country. The result is that I'm always surprised when it turns out they're Irish too.

I live in Australia, I always assume people on the internet are American, less so on the Escapist as it seems to be a pretty diverse website

The greatest majority of people here are white males, but behind that would have to be Americans. So naturally I assume that posters I run across are American. If I assumed that everyone was Australian I'd look like an idiot.

I tend to assume they're from the internet, and that they understand English, unless I'm in a non-English speaking forum.

Other than that I really don't give a damn.

I'm an American and I use "Mum" all the time. I think I picked it up from Terry Pratchett books though, so I guess I'm an outlier on the data. I also say bloody a lot, because I found out it was worse than "fucking", but here, nobody knows so you can say it in public and nobody yells at you for it. Apparently descended from the oath "God's Blood" or "Christ's Wounds", both considered highly rude when they were in the common language.

Wait Wait Wait... Are you saying that everyone on the internet isn't American? I CALL SHENANIGANS!
haha sarcasm. but yes unfortunatly I am a horrible person and either don't give it thought or yes I do make such assumptions. I should really work on that.

I always picture everyone online as being European. No specific country, just European. I'm from the US.

No, I'm Irish, so we're in the minority.

However, and I apologize in advance for this, whenever someones being an idiot I usually assume they're American.

The sad thing is, they usually are.

Depends, On say The Escapist, I generally assume US or UK, or Ireland. However, on the broader internets, i suppose i do assume US.

However, if i'm playing say, L4D2 on Steam. I can tell where they live approximately from their ping (And accent.)

let me put it this way.

I assume most people that I'll encounter on the internet are douchebags. And if there really is one thing that is surely international, humanitarian and true in this world... it's douchebaggery

Where are my fellow Antarcticans? Antarctites? Antarctish? Penguins?

Anyway. No, I do not assume people are American as majority of forums I am on tend to have more un-Americans, I mean, people of various and respective nationalities.

I do have tendency to assume people look like their avatars in real life, making the internet an interesting representation of reality.

I assume most people I meet are either American, British, or Australian. Not sure why, though 98% of the people I do know on the internet are one of those three.

I sometimes assume they're form the US or UK. Though typically I don't care and just assume everyone is from the internet.
