Do you buy at GameStop?

I don't have enough money to buy a Gamestop.
-Sorry, couldn't resist

I do buy at Gamestop when I buy my games. Probably because I don't buy enough games very often, so I just default to whichever retailer I imagine would have the game I want when I want to buy a game. I don't really care enough to go out of my way to go to other places that may be considered "better" in any sense of the word.

I went in last month to pick up a pokemon game. I was thinking, "Hey, I'll get it used. It should only be about 25 bucks. D/P/Pl came out ages ago."
Thirty-fucking-five dollars for a used game. I was tempted to just buy it new but I decided it was too much to pay. The used game market isn't as awesome as I was under the impression it was. I will buy new, specifically because I think Gamestop are douche bags for reselling games at essentially the same price just undercutting them a little. If it was a larger mark off I would get it, but it isn't. This is just a dick move on their part.

OK so I've been thinking, and I hate the way that Game Stop does business. From the damned used games to the balls they have for selling you pre-opened NEW GAMES!!!

So ever since a shiny new Future Shop opened in my local mall, I do all of my game shopping there (I'm assuming if you've bought something, you were shopping), and even my pre-orders(DONT CARE ABOUT ANY OF GS DARN SPECIAL PREORDER DEALS).

But what about you guys and girls of the Escapist community, do you still buy at game stop?
1) Read confessions of a game stop employee... GUTTING is actually efficient, and your game is in the exact same condition. Stop being such a wussy

2) Yes, they sell used games. Your point? What do you hate about the used games? You blame GameStop for selling used games?

3) I corrected you illiterate post up top. Read and Learn

I buy froim EB Games, which is Canadian Game Stop. Why wouldn't I? They sell cheaper. I personally just don't buy used games (I just solved point number 2)

You guys do know that if you go up to the counter and ask them for the new game, they will give you an unopened, pre-sealed one, right?

OT: Sometimes. I usually check if they or Amazon has the best price/incentive.

The used market is best for games that you can't buy new anymore. Like Gamecube games and most PS2 games.

What's this business of pre-opened new games?

I've purchased a few used games at gamestop before because no one else around me had a new one in stock at the time and I was in 'impulse buy' mode.

I made a preorder the other day at gamestop because I can pick up the game on my way home, no need to ship anything. Also best buy apparently sells you an empty game case that you bring to the store to redeem, which seems wasteful. Yes, the probably reuse them, but at gamestop I just bring back the receipt or my license, less to worry about.

Somewhat related: Can someone tell me the economic reasoning behind 'buying local'? Why should I buy from Joe's Game Store, rather than Best Buy? Joe and Best Buy both employ high school kids from the area, they both buy the same stuff made in Chinese sweat shops, and there is a possibility that Joe is a douch that treats his employee's the same as 'the Man' does.

Most of the time, I try to buy at Amazon.com as they have the lowest price guarantee. Most new releases will come from Amazon so they offer free shipping. And sometimes, they have a $10 off next purchase if you pre-order.

Like last time, I pre-ordered Dead Rising 2. UPS delivered it on the day it came out. A day later, I get an email from Amazon saying that they are going to credit my credit card $0.50 back to honor their lowest price guarantee. Notice that whatever I purchase next from Amazon will have a $10 credit on it. Most likely it will be THE FIGHT for the PS3 Move, for the $39.96 - $10.00. Nice..

Other than that, I occassionally buy games at Gamestop, because right now, there is a cute girl working there and she talks my off about how great microsoft treats people in the gaming industry to their stuff especially about kinect.

Other options currently:
Walmart- I go there often and sometimes buy there, but the selection is lacking and the price normally stays fixed for longer.
K-mart- Large selection (because no one buys there) but the price remains high for a long, long time.
Blockbuster- I've bought a game once there, but that was it. Basically the games are all used (unless you preorder), the disc condition often can be worse than Gamestop (my current residence is a small town. Somehow this discourages some of the horrible conditions normal trade-ins have, perhaps due to a lot less anonymity).

None are really much better, and sometimes buying at Gamestop has had some welcome rewards (staff there actually likes selling good games to returning customers rather than offloading crap onto them, as well as has some fun stories to share).

I dont think we have Gamestop in Australia. I buy at GAME or Eb Games.

And you phrased the title of the thread badly:
"Do you buy *A* GameStop?"

For new, pre-ordered games yes, solely out of convinience, midnight releases, and/or pre-order bonuses. Plus now they have that silly rewards program so that counts for something, at least when deciding between gamestop and wal-mart or whathaveyou.

For used, sometimes. I may wait a few weeks for a new game to be sold as used for $5 less, and with the 10% edge card discount it's a good $50 before tax($10 off is gas for a week almost so yay). but for older games, it depends on the amazon price, which is almost always ~50% the price of gamestop. Star ocean or alpha protocol at gamestop still sell for 45 bucks or so, while on amazon i can get them for $20 with shipping.

Plus the gamestops near me are staffed well and friendly, or at the very least with people who are efficient but quiet.

The reason is that most of the money paid to Best Buy goes to corporate which is not local. If you buy from local game shops (which Gamestop is not) then almost all the money stays and circulates in the community.

I sometimes browse them and get any games I've missed or want on day 1 if I haven't pre-ordered it, and if it's cheaper than the GAME right across it in the mall.

Never had any problems with them. Could be fun though.

In short, no.

Gamestop treats their customers like shit and they don't sell quality products. Many of the used games I've bought from there didn't work and the games I didn't buy were overpriced. They're anti-consumer and they hurt the industry.

Fuck Gamestop. The sooner they die the better off we'll be.

How do they hurt the industry?

Although I believe Gamestop is establishing in the UK later this year.
They're going to have a hard time about it. Between the GAME group and CEX, the market for retail video game chains is pretty damn saturated.

I personally think that the people who have an intense dislike of Gamestop just happen to have a really crappy local branch. All the ones I've been to are just fine. Plus, since I only buy PS2 games that came out five years ago, everything's really cheap. And the people know more about games than I do.

Also, the anger toward pre-opened games? Just silly. Honestly, it's not like you people are trying to get a copy of The Dark Side of the Moon.
