No, the hype does not make it a better game. The fact that it's faster paced and more exciting makes it a better game.

Ok, I think we've got the message now. Some of you don't like football.

You know what, coming on here and seeing yet another token 'I don't give a monkeys about football or the world cup, do you?' thread on display isn't exactly my idea of fun either.

On topic, I'm watching and enjoying it, diving mummy's boys and all. Even the vuvuzelas aren't that annoying on TV (I'm watching the football, not listening to the supporters). Of course, I don't buy the faux patriotism (once saw a car with 4 of those flags you jam into the windows on it. Utterly ridiculous.) and the insipid, tabloid inspired hope of winning this tournament (come on, it's England for christs sake, they ALWAYS make things painful for their fans.)

I don't care enough to not give a damn. I'm too lethargic to be apathetic.

Not really. I might watch part of a game or two if my brother has them on tv, but it's not something I go out of my way to see. That being said, I semi-support England and Portugal because they have my favourite players from the Premier League and La Liga in them.

I love football (soccer). The reason for all the advertising targeting this audience is because this audience is dominant in the world. The US is one of the only countries to not embrace it, and while the US does make up a large portion of the population, it does not equal that of the rest of the world.

I'd just like to know who wins. In Canada soccer isn't really a big event.

Spot on.
I love the world cup, I'm more of a rugby fan but I always have and always will love this competition, for most of the world it is the pinnacle of international sport.
It is especially interesting this year since the missus is French and her brother is in town to watch it, so I reluctantly find my self shouting 'Allez le bleus'

Yes, I find Soccer more entertaining then football coming from someone who spent half his childhood growing up here, football is like an Agatha Christie book, it starts out really boring but when it finally gets good you would've already been in such a bored out state its hard to tell if your supposed to get excited. Wrestling is mostly staged other then the ones you have to buy, I mean fuck its like some sort of Japanese show at times when at a que all the camera's look at the place that has lightened up and another wrestler comes out.

Soccer on the other hand I found more entertaining, since its always fun watching people go through obstacle courses in a way, or just work as a team to get a goal done, not as a "pass the ball to this guy and he'll get the job done". I mean many sports are just soccer but, look at hockey and basketball. Also, I still don't get why Nascar is popular at all, F1 is superior.

Well anyway, I watched the last part of the North Korea vs. Brazil game, and although Brazil has the best soccer teams in the world, North Korea fought pretty well and in the back of my mind I was rooting for them, since other then the North Koreans paid to go there no one else really was since I doubt Kim Jong Il would permit them broadcasting North Korea's loss, although they did play pretty hard and they were more emotional when they scored.

I don't really care about soccer, but I am a chauvinist and I do love shouting at the tv and getting drunk. So the recent Dutch victory over Denmark yesterday warranted a vuvuzela blast or two in my opinion. :)

I love FOOTBALL.
-rant start-
And I refuse to call it soccer just because some americans don't call their favourite sport "american rugby" instead of "american football". But then the comparison would make it obvoius what a joke/marketing-event AF is nowadays.
-rant over-

I just hope that the statistics are right, because every team that has beaten Australia in the first game became world champion.
And since Germany won 4:0 (sorry aussies), I would really love to see this particular stat to be proven right... ^^

btw I'm german and I used to play football as well as AF and rugby, so I know the physical differences between them very well... ;-)
Rugby is the toughest. Football callenges your endurance. And AF is all about strategy/tactics (it's a trainer's game,chess-alike).

I just got half a day off work today to watch it, and will get the entire day on the 25th. So as far as it increases my rest time, I do give a damn :p

I don't care about sports at all.

I mean, I might have a drink with my dad and watch the AFL Grand Final (there is no way I'd find it entertaining while sober, it's just a bunch of guys kicking a ball around), but I could hardly care less who wins or loses.

I hate the World Cup not because I can't stand football but because of the fake patriotism surrounding it. All the people who say "we" when what they mean is "the team". "We" didn't do anything. "We" aren't even there. "We" are sitting at home watching the telly. Fucking idiots. And don't even get me started on the adverts.

What I do love, is that all the sponsors of the English team aren't English.
Usually, I don't like when people refer to a team as We, but if its a national team, then it represents the whole nation that you are a part of, so its kinda ok.
