I don't burn it or anything but I don't go crazy over it. I guess we don't revere it as much up here in the north. I like the leaf though.

I'm Irish and I respect my flag to the death. Not literally the flag but what it stands for. I don't let it touch the ground, i fold it properly and all that. A country's flag is a powerful symbol that can stir up STRONG emotions.
I'm half Irish, though I have never been to Ireland, I feel that the Irish flag probably stands for a fight for freedom and strength of character and will, considering the history of Ireland.
It actually stands for a truce between the Nationalist tradition and the Orange tradition.
It's pretty much like this:
Green = Nationalists
Orange = 'Orange' Traditionalists (ie Unionists)
White = A truce between the two sides that will, hopefully, never be broken.

I'd love to check out my ancestors, my folks researched it years ago. All they can remember is that we came form Co. Clare. :)
So where abouts did your ancestors live? Never know.....I could be living nearby!

Wait a mo, I just wiki'd the Tricolour...turns out nobody is 100% sure as to what it stands for! :L

It's a yellow plus sign on a blue background.
It's just a flag.

Nationality means absolutely nothing to me.
Unless you're from Norway, in which case I'm forced to make fun of you.

Hell no, why should I? My government gives me a reason to show respect I will. Until this day I have yet to see that.
American? Me too!
Unfortunately...
Yea it sux.... At least we have Obama now......
With the "..." I feel that you are probably joking. Because, if you really think things are better because Obama is in office, I will be putting my palm on my face.
Umm it is. At least he's a democrat. And he is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better that George Dubya who said Nuculer instead of Nuclear.

I love the union jack, but I don't own one, or have a flag pole to put it on. I do, however, have an English flag-patterned bandanna that I haven't worn for about 5 years now.

I think my flag (Montenegrin) looks pretty cool, but I don't really feel any special kind of respect for it or anything. But I think it's still idiotic that Serbs, who are actually the majority in my city, occasionally burn the flag of Montenegro when, for example, they beat us in some sports event or something... I saw a bunch of kids that even younger than me do that once...

A flag is nothing more than an identifier for the nation it represents. It is a piece of cloth, easy to replace if damaged or destroyed.

True, but the Statue of Liberty, the Declaration of Independence, AND the American Flag all stand for liberty and justice for all, no? They are all equally important in my opinion.
Ah, see, that's my point, they all stand for liberty and justice for all, thus, that's what your relatives died for, liberty and justice for all, not the flag itself. So it might be better to simply say that you respect what your flag stands for, not the flag itself, because in the end, it is just dyed cloth.
Exactly. Would you mind burning your country if it swayed from the ideals upon which is was founded?

A flag is a symbol for a set of ideals, as a country is an institution bound by those ideals. If that flag is misused to represent ideals other than those upon which it's creation was justified, it is burned.

Although the above analogy isn't exactly a strong one, it sure does sound nice.

I think the reason why us lot in the UK are less gung-ho about flags and patriotism is because there's no codified constitution describing what exactly we're being gung-ho about. Because of this, flags here are meaningless as anything other than border and land markers.

But then this is whole argument of codified constitution vs. uncodified, which is something I've had rather enough of over the last year, thank you very much.

I think the idea it symbolizes is noble, but the fact that they use it to symbolize these ideals is something I think is kind of stupid.

I would burn it, but only because I burn everything not immediately vital to me that is properly flammable. I am building my own lighter collection :)

Holy shit... the day I'd treat a fucking flag that way I must have gone through some kind of lobotomy. I do not treat any flag that way. Flags are supposed to represent a nation. I'm not diggin the whole "patriot" and "nationlistic" vibe most people have for their countries, even worse, a piece of dyed fucking cloth. Patriotism and nationlism are the bastard parents of racsism and as I have an eternal hatred for racsism I do NOT want to be accociated with that

I'm half Irish, though I have never been to Ireland, I feel that the Irish flag probably stands for a fight for freedom and strength of character and will, considering the history of Ireland.

I'm an O'Brian.(Sometime a few generations ago, my family for whatever reason changed the the "e" to an "a". I've been told it is probably because that is the way they started pronouncing it because of where they now live here in the US. I constantly have to correct people when they are writing it down.) My Non-Irish grandma loves to do genealogical research, and she found out my family is descended from one of the old kings of Ireland.

If I only get to go to one place outside the US, in my lifetime, it will have to be Ireland. I think it is a kind of draw that being Irish has, we have to go back to the homeland. I came to this conclusion after I had spoken to many other people where I am at, that have mostly Irish in them.

Now, I am also half German, but I really don't feel any draw to go to Germany.
Hmm i'm not going to diss your grandma but that's a big claim to make. We can't even find out records about our ancestors only 10 generations ago coz of the events of War of Independence and Civil War! But who am i to say your grandma didn't find that out :) Make sure you come to Eire my friend, it's an experience to say the least ;D
Well to tell the truth, my grandma is pretty nuts. She's on my German side of the family, and she lived in Germany when she was little girl and goes on trips there at least once a year. She is very stuck up. She thinks that everybody in Germany is well-mannered and eats meals at the exact same time every day, and don't party all night or do anything that would disturb the perfect peaceful order of life. Obviously, she has her head in the clouds.

But on the genealogical stuff, she probably did very loose research and probably just assumed my family was related to the Irish king Brian Boru. She likes people to think that she is important and that people in her family are important. I cracked up laughing when she said that on my Irish side of the family, we were related to the old west outlaw train robber Jesse James.
Hah okay well I can say without offending now that your grandma probly made it up :p Conor O'Brien is the current direct descendant of Boru on the male line going back 1000 yrs.

We had a Dutch flag once that we raised at our birthdays (normal to do that here)/Queen's birthday/Victory day. But one evening we forgot to take it in and someone stole it.

It's a piece of cloth with a red, white and blue field. I know that it stands for my country, but I'm definetly not going to sing the national anthem everyday or treat the flag as if it were some deity that needs to be worshipped. Not that I can anyway, considering it has been stolen.

I sort of respect; I respect it enough to not insult it that much, don't respect it so much that I don't own or plan to own one.

No, not really. I don't buy into that tribal patriotism stuff. As far as i'm concerned, a flag is a logo, used to represent and advertise a collective group of individuals that live and work within the same structure.

It's the country I live in. I could have it wayyyyy worse. I guess you can say that the flag holds the history of our country.

So yes, I do respect it.

As an Australian I respect our flag and what it represents, though there's a debate over whether or not we should become a republic, part of which would involve changing the flag and getting rid of the union jack. Something I wouldn't get especially teared up about, so long as they change it to something decent.
