Hell no, why should I? My government gives me a reason to show respect I will. Until this day I have yet to see that.
American? Me too!
Unfortunately...
Yea it sux.... At least we have Obama now......
With the "..." I feel that you are probably joking. Because, if you really think things are better because Obama is in office, I will be putting my palm on my face.
Umm it is. At least he's a democrat. And he is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better that George Dubya who said Nuculer instead of Nuclear.
If you actually read into what all the different congressman, senators, and other public officials have done in their careers, you would know that, what party that they belong to, for the most part, means absolutely nothing, both parties have been hijacked by crazy progressives and socialists.

I didn't care for Bush, but he was less of a threat to what America stands for than Obama is.

Obama is dragging this country down the path of Socialism, which will destroy this country and what it was founded on and stands for. You might get a few nice handouts in then beginning, but in the long run, it will turn into freedom and justice for none. The majority of the country is opposed to what Obama is doing, they are even peacefully marching against him. But what does he do, he talks to use with mentality like, "Listen children! I'm your father and you will do everything that I command!"

I can't wait till the midterm elections, the socialist and progressive Democrats and Republicans won't know what hit them, they will be rightfully voted out and replaced by true Conservatives that know how to bring this country back to its founding roots.

Obama and his congressional henchmen constantly attack the people that are opposing them, labeling the people wrongly, to try and get other people to stop listening to the truth that Obama and his henchmen are trying to take over and destroy this country.

What Obama doesn't realize is that trying to strike us down that way will make us more powerful than he will ever know.
Here we go, "That damn socialist is going to kill us" Why do you think socilalism is bad? Hitler was one, but aside from his Jew killing ways his government was perfect, he ruined eutopia because for his hatred, and Muslims will do the same, the muslims think they must kill the Jews, little stat, 1 billion muslims, 14 million jews, and muslims call amercians crazy
As I have told other people asking why socialism is bad, look at one of my posts above, I think is my longest one. A very condensed answer is, socialism = loss of freedoms. Socialism can't avoid going into peoples homes and forcing them to do things, because if they didn't do that they wouldn't be "able to keep the welfare of the citizens" any other way.

I was a flag bearer in Girl Scouts, where I learned all the American flag handling rules. And while staying with Czech scouts one summer, I saw them be amusingly punished (i.e. dragged out of bed the next morning and thrown into the river fully clothed) for mishandling a flag, specifically holding and folding it upside-down.

But I would say I personally have a ceremonial respect for flags.

I respect my country to some extent, but I don't recite the pledge of allegiance. It is too glamourized, and religious. Granted it was made back when religion was still a major part of life in western civilization, but i don't like the 'one nation under god' part. It isn't under god, the U.S is far from special care from god. Therefore, I can't 100% respect my flag
"One Nation Under God" Wasn't added until the Red Scare. Just a nice tidbit of info. ;)
I don't necessarily think that the founding fathers would get that angry even with them being enlightenment thinkers for the most part and that many of them were Free Masons

I grew up in a military, conservative family. In front of every house we ever lived the American flag waved. It was a sacred icon of patriotism to America. Every week, we washed it. Every single one was to be treated with respect. Hand over heart, eyes to the flag during the national anthem. To desecrate one was an act of treason. I don't know about you guys, but do you respect and love your nation's flag?
That must be rough (unless you liked it)

Well I would never burn my flag, unless someone paid me to do it or if it was fuel for a fire

Yes I do respect the finnish flag even though I don't own one, but then again I don't own a flag pole either.

Seeing as how I already proved you wrong with my own post with, ya know, actual facts and statistics...

You may wish to try harder.
The problem is you are only partially incorrect and only told part of the story.

Norway isn't socialist. It is a MIXED economy, with state owned companies, as well as a free market. The reason that is can pay for the social services it provides is due to the ration of natural resources compared to total population. The US doesn't have a ratio quite as beneficial.

Norway should be proud of what they were able to accomplish and I am definately not saying what they have is bad, just that some facts were a little off.

It's just cloth, the real pride comes from our history and our countryme. Dont idolize a flag.
Soldiers don't fight for a flag, they fight for the people.

I used to think I was indifferent to our nations flag (Australia) until I saw some extreme left wing high horse activist arts course type burn it and whack it in a frame, with the words "PROUDLY UN-AUSTRALIAN" and mount it outside a gallery. Don't know the guys name, don't want to but I did remember his face and if I ever see him in the street I did promise myself to punch him real hard on the nose. Not for been proudly unasutralian couldn't give a rats just for his insensitivity to a number of people who made the ultimate sacrifice under that flag. Almost as bad as the creep I heard about who defaced a ww2 monument ,calling them war criminals.
Yah we've got more than our fair share of morons over here, thank god they don't have guns.

To me, its just a symbol. As George Carlin said, "Symbols are for the symbol-minded" (say it outloud and you'll get it).

You may wish to try harder.

Also, this person may have said it better than I ever could:

"Just to clarify for the ignorant Republican-voting masses, Socialism is an economic policy, and has nothing to do with the taking away or giving of freedoms. It is purely a fiscal policy, and if you want to look at who will really be taking away your freedoms, you may want to look at the party that has introduced The Patriot Act, illegal detention and espionage towards American citizens, and the reduction of rights for women and homosexuals. That is the loss of freedom.

Please point out the facts that back your idea that socialism takes away freedom, without including Stalinism, Maoism, Leninism, etc. (which are all dictatorial corruptions of Communism, which isn't Socialism either) (look up the difference, if you don't understand, before answering, so as to look smarter)

I'm guessing nobody will though, as that takes analysis, logic, and knowledge of politics.

Also please remember to not include Castroism, the Cuban form of dictatorial "Communism" and look at real socialist governments (like the Nordic Countries, Switzerland, or to a lesser extent, continental Europe)"

-Peter H

And various other things.

True socialism=good. I already proved this with Norway.
It is common sense that socialism will take away freedoms, there isn't perfect socialism.

I won't comment to anything else you say. You aren't open to reality, and clearly don't want to realize the truth because you are in denial.

I won the argument so I don't need to say anything more.

I'm fairly indifferent. I wouldn't get offended if someone burned a flag, but I wouldn't do it myself. I don't see any reason to care, but if someone showed me a good one I would.

Symbols are important; I don't respect my flag, because I'm not patriotic, but if you are it pretty much follows suit. Saying it's a piece of cloth is missing the point.

I guess in a vaguely related topic, I'm OK with people burning the American flag (I'm British but nobody cares about anything but the old stars n stripes). Even if you really, really believe in America (whatever that means) and believe the flag represents freedom, then unfortunately it follows that the flag represents the freedom to actually burn the flag itself. It's one of the many kinds of ironies that makes starting barbeques that bit easier.
