Does anybody else sense a lack of musical diversity on the escapist?

Despite just registering tonight, I've been lurking these forums for a while, and I've noticed something. There seems to be an immense lack of diversity of music on the escapist.

Now, let me qualify that statement by saying that it's not that people don't like music, or that they don't like really good music, it's just that the music they post is usually video game OST's, metal, and jay-pop, and other things related to nerd and video game culture.

Why is it you escapees don't follow music like you follow video games, and to a lesser extent, movies?

It just strikes me as odd that in such modern times, where good music is available at your fingertips, that people here still don't have a more diverse taste in it like they do the other modern art forms.

EDIT: Also, please feel free to share your music. A few exceptions. No j-pop, game OST's, protomen, or metal (sabbath, maiden, guns n' roses, etc). Everything else is welcome.

EDIT: THE SEQUEL: I enjoy metal, the protomen, and Game OST's. Not so much J-Pop, but that's not the point. This thread is here to discuss music that isn't often discussed on the escapist. Those are all things commonly discussed here, and already have many threads for.

EDIT: REVOLUTION: I LIKE METAL. I LIKE IT A LOT. I LIKE THE PROTOMEN. I LIKE GAME OST'S. I AM JUST TIRED THEM BEING THE ONLY GENRES DISCUSSED ON THE ESCAPIST, AND I WANT TO GET THE ESCAPISTS OPINION ON OTHER GENRES. I DON'T CARE THAT YOU DO LIKE THOSE, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT. PLEASE STOP POSTING ABOUT ME NOT LIKING YOUR MUSIC, BECAUSE MOST LIKELY I DO. I'M JUST TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THEM. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. SO PLEASE, NO MORE CONVERSATION ON MY HATRED OF "GOOD MUSIC" OR HOW IT'S SUBJECTIVE.

You made me type in all caps. See what you've turned me into?

well the site is primarily for video games, so it makes sense that the majority of things going on here revolve around video games...

Actually... yeah kinda.
There's lots of threads about metal and then a lot of how terrible music is but... not a whole lot of threads devoted to good music. Hell, any review of music in the User Reviews section rarely gets comments.
I'm not really complaining. I have a different forum I frequent all about music but still, now that you mention it...

I can't speak for the entire escapist community, but I'm pretty balanced out what considers my musical choice. I just can't stand hip-hop/rap (that garbage) and most pop. More specificly I follow everyting that goes in direction Metal. But that does not mean I don't love OST (Movies and Games).

But to some extend, I understand what you mean. A friend of mine is also exclusevly listening to game soundtrack. That is quite, annoying is not the right word but, somehow...I don't know...unsettling(?)

But I'm not complaining. Actualy, I couldn't care less. I don't visit the Escapist to talk about music, for that I've got other Forums or mouth-to-mouth propaganda by friends.
I wouldn't even try to talk to the people here about music (nor that one friend of mine).

We could make a music thread if we wanted to. Nobody is stopping us.

But you are right. Not many music-devoted threads. If you used the bar at the top of the page called "Search The Escapist", you will find millions of music related threads.

Confidence, dear lad. Just keep looking.

True, yet there are numerous daily conversations about comics, movies, anime, cartoons, etc.

That seems about the extent of the escapist's musical appreciation.

I'm talking about other genres besides metal. Punk, rap, hardcore, alternative, hardcore, house, techno, hip-hop, post-rock. There are so many that I never see discussed on the escapist.

Well (generally speaking), they hate anything that's not metal or an anime ost. Rap requires no talent. Anyone who likes pop is braindead.

I mean, I love the Escapist and everything, but this is like my biggest pet peeve about the place. :(

Like I said originally, 90% of them are game OST's and j-pop. The other 10% are mainstream music acts.

I don't know how to word this exactly, but basically think of the musical equivalent of Studio Pixel (the guy who developed cave story). Why are bands like that never discussed? I mean you can see that devotion to games, movies, comics, and TV, but not to video games.

Maybe not many escapists enjoy Punk? Or whatever this "hardcore" is? (Isn't that an adjective that comes before other genres?) Or a lot of the others?

That doesn't mean they don't appreciate music. It just means they don't appreciate those types of music.

I, for one, DESPISE electronic music and all its spawn.

Well, those things cross over with games easily, like JRPGs, anime tie in games, movie tie in games, Superhero games and so on.

Eh, with the escapist, everyone is either a metalhead, or listens to a lot of J-pop, I wish there was more of a variety, but those are sort of the majority rule.

I don't know about this, Bubba. I had a few private conversations about the tenets of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture on here. I've seen a few threads about "good" music that took a while to turn to OSTs.

Though I do get that the majority of music around here tends to revolve around the general voids of OSTs, rap, and metal. Not that there's anything wrong with these genres in and of themselves, but it's nice to break up the monotony with some funk, or blues, or jam, or something.

It makes sence, I mean this is a site for video game lovers. Though I have mentioned before that I prefer to listen to classical music.

I agree with you on the blues. I listen to it nearly as much as I do metal.

So to sum it up?

"People on these forums like music I don't like and therefore they have bad taste and don't appreciate good music for people like me with good taste."

Yeah, grow up buddy. Opinions are subjective.

Ah, Howlin' Wolf...I can't find much of the stuff on vinyl, though. I have lots of Downchild, that usually satiates me.

Woah calm down buddy. What I was saying is it's like someone who prefers music over video games, and as such only plays games like rockband. Rockband is a good game, but there are so many other games.

You don't have to be an ass.

Whoa, how did you get so hostile offa that? It wasn't effin shouting about how bad those things are, just a notice of a lack of much else. If someone making note of omething riles you like that, maybe you should be less defensive, or you know grow up.

From what I've seen most Escapists seem to favor metal, game soundtracks, and j-pop. That seems to make sense to me since this is a gaming website that seems to be the core musical diet of a typical gamer. They care more about the games that they are playing than whatever music may be coming out, so they end up just skimming musical genres that appeal to them instead of diving in head first and spending their time finding loads of music.

Now I'm not saying all Escapists are like this, I know I'm certainly not, but from what it seems most don't care about music outside the genres they mainly listen to because they don't want to spend the time looking for it. Some Escapists just care more for games than they do for music its as simple as that, or least thats how I see.

I'm always looking for new stuff to listen to because I can't stand having the same old tired sounds put into my ears over and over again. Other people don't mind that so they just stick to one genre that they like and never really branch out except for a band or two. Does that make their musical opinion less valid? Not really, but I wouldn't see them as a dependable source to get new music from.
