ZERG RUSH KEKEKE!! But no, seriously, I normally feel no connection, I just get annoyed when they die because it means more minerals. I will admit to being sad when my workers die in Starcraft. The Protoss Probes are just kind of cute.
Not a zerg rush...

about 100 low level ground troops in SupCom
Same thing. And it isn't a rush if you don't shout KEKEKE. Then it's jsut a mob. And it never works.
I just type... DOMINATION IS IMMINENT YOU IMPUDENT FOOLS!!!
Then my czar starts writing my glorious name into your base.
You know waht beats a minion mass? A carrier battalion. 72 carriers with 8 interceptors each. It's litterally a cloud of death. They fly over a group, the thing beneath them disappears, the cloud disperses, and the enemy is just plain GONE.

"Those bastards! They're not even able to maneuver through the landscape! I hope you all burn!" But I feel bad when I get my heroes/special troops dead, the commando in C&C3, the heroes in... well Heroes, and any unit that screams in agony when his ship catches fire and crashes to the ground...

Different game but same concept and it was what I did in strcraft as well.

You're just looking at it from a position of logic, reason and practical military theory.

You're forgetting that every single one of my men-at-arms and cavaliers are beautiful unique snowflakes that must be cherished and protected.

THEY'RE HUMAN BEINGS DAMMIT!

Depends what RTS. Generally I try and preserve them, especially when there's an advantage for doing so. (F'rinstance, in Dawn of War, it's cheaper to reinforce a squad than build a new one).

Still, I did once get through the last GDI mission on the original C&C with only about 25 casualties (impressive, given that the NOD get to sling nukes around on that level).

Mostly im ambivalent, failing that; gleeful.

Except in dungeon keeper 2. I really formed attachments to be creatures in that one.

Only in certain games. I recall getting a feeling of responsibility towards my "elite" units in Total annihilation. Right above their health bar, you could see how many units they've killed. Didn't really change any stats or anything, I just liked it when I had a tank battalion made up of the elite survivors of other battles. That was kind of cool, and i would never just throw them away in a careless assault.

YES!!! It's why I never got very good at RTSs.

On Total Annihilation my first attack would always be with 30-50 Pee-Wees. Most would die and I'd pull them back when there were a few left. I would treasure the survivors and send them on raids as veterans (you got a little badge with 5 kills, didn't do anything though!)

How cute is this:
Heh, overlooked your post ;)

It was a really cool feat seeing the killcount

Yeah it was. I got quite upset when an ace fighter jet with 25+ kills got blown out of the sky because I set his wing's patrol path over an area without realising the enemy had built a base with air defence out there.

Damn, makes me want to crack out TA again. Much more tangibly enjoyable than SupCom in my opinion, it became too far removed from the world.

I'd love a game with an average of say 50 units on each side but little semi-customisable robots each of them. Each with kill records, damage taken, that kind of thing. A robotech RTS!

Yeah.. I still have my TA CD's for mac, but they only want to run in classic, so I've got to find a way around this sometime.. TA is the one RTS I enjoyed the most ever, but SupCom was a huge dissapointment for me at least

Often, my units don't deign to obey my orders properly, and instead of going around a cliff they try to take a shortcut through the enemy base, which produces scenes that could best be described as First World War-era Western Front trench warface with my side's soldiers all made up of those retard babies the working classes have been busily squirting out by the truckload. While such occurences usually end in operational as well as tactical disaster for me, I'm more than happy to watch them suffer and die for their stupidity.

Also, when I do have survivors of such a legendary massacre that will inevitably be suppressed by the government's propaganda machine, I'll just send them off to certain death as a punishment, or use them as target practice for my men, hopefully setting an example (though it doesn't seem to work, as apparently my soldiers have the long-term memory of the average goldfish and forget everything that happened more than five seconds ago). Sometimes, when I'm feeling malevolent enough, I'll just do this to raw recruits as well, training a dozen soldiers and having them all kill each other just for shits and giggles.

I only empathise with my men so far as they are a gun with legs and can blow shit up. Beyond that, they are walking plates of ablative armour for my Overlord tanks.

@Rossatdi: Metal Fatigue or MechCommander are kind of like that, though you mainly blow up heaps of tanks and the odd enemy 'Mech in the latter and are at least partially dependent on said tanks in the former.

Definitely. I really enjoyed the freedom of the game. You could make one central mega-base with tiny metal collection outposts, or you could have lots of diffused centres. You could attack with a wave of vehicles, or a combination of bombing runs followed by surgical strikes to take enemy power plants. Just joyous.

I made forward outpost and supply gathering stations and build hedgehogs and turrets around them. I would usually have several frontlines I could withdraw to if I got forced out of a position. Fall back to safety, repair and gear up, and then try to retake the positions and reinforce them. This wasn't the most efficient way of playing, (my mate just turtled and builded nukes) but it was really fun. You kind of roleplay a bit, which is why I felt sorry for losing those elite units. Casualties in a careless misjudged assault on enemy lines is particularly hard to live with ;)

I never feel bad when a troop dies, just annoyed. However, I DO tend to feel pleasure when a female troop dies, usually accompanied by a smexy moan/groan :p

Oh yes.

Like it's nobody's business.

I remember AOE 2 where I would play so conservatively, essentially attempting to win deathmatches by waiting it out. A strategy that never really pulled through for me.

To this day, I am terrible at RTS games because of an unwillingness on my part to risk defeat/loss of troops by attacking someone. I'd make a great military commander, no?

That's also why I am terrible at RPGs. I never pass the tutorials because inevitably someone will perish and it's unbearable to me. I have the WarCraft III War Chest and I don't play it ever, apart from that Tower Defense mod. Don't ask me what earthly reason inspired me to part with my hard-earned cash and purchase it.

I hate losing units in any game that keeps track of the number of units you've lost. That drives me nuts in any genre. In Civilization I normally stack up huge armies before I attach but normally keep all my units in the cities where they gain defense bonuses - so that I don't lose them.

I was like that in Lemmings as well, until I realized some levels required lemmings to die. By that point the lemmings lost their charm and revealed themselves to be the lumbering idiots that they are. I had no problem then in expending with them.

Well I actually killed my allies in Haze, as they were useless, but if you hit them hard enough with a car, they become a level of entertainment previously though unobtainable.
