Does anyone else feel bad when their troops in RTS games die?

I don't like World War games or games that are based on real events where people gave their lives. i think it's a bit disrespectful. If I was there and 50-60 years later kids were playing 'games' of it I would be horrified.

I did not play much RTS games, but I never cared about my units. They were just little insects I sent off to battle other little insects (and note, my army was always 9/10 of my population, so I had alot of ants to go to war with). Never did a multiplayer thing though...I know I would suck hardcore if I did.

Every time a unit is lost in an Advance Wars game I feel bad for them. Probably because I feel like I would be able to smash the other guy without losing any units if I were a better strategist.

I end to feel bad in the early game when I have a few units, but late in the game when I am rubbing against the unit cap I sent my useless units on suicide runs so that I can make better ones. If RTS game designers wanted me to care about the untis they would give me a way of retiring outdated units that was both easy and benificial. Like retiering a vetren unit to a training camp increases the quality of the uints that come out of that training camp because they were taught by the vetren soldier.

Only thing I get sad about is having to train a unit again,
Although when I build quite the elite unit like BloodThirster I love it when he dies! He gives off a big ol' demonic laugh!

Always makes me chuckle

in warcraft 3 if i still have footmen or unupgraded archers by tier 3 i kill them myself.

but no, they all look the same, and they dont have very well developed characters in most cases.

You're just looking at it from a position of logic, reason and practical military theory.
Of course.

You're forgetting that every single one of my men-at-arms and cavaliers are beautiful unique snowflakes that must be cherished and protected.
So are the ones who would die if i hesitated, why are the ones you would sacrifice more valuable again.

THEY'RE HUMAN BEINGS DAMMIT!
There pixels really.
But that just ruins the fun of the discussion.
So again, why are the ones saved by hesitating more valuable than the number lost by not.

This happens to me every time I play Company of Heroes, and yet I still play it... Why??

Anyone else feel this way?
yeah I do, but that is mostly because it means I'm losing.

Generally no. I might feel bad because they didn't manage to kill more any troops, but that's more feeling angry than sad about their losses. They failed me as killing machines and failed me as meatshields, thus, I feel no sadness. Their names are stricken from the great RTS archives forever, never to be remembered.

If I get myself a squad which consistently wins battles (generally best in DoW when you can easily replenish a squad with people), then I will develop a sort of attachment to them, even sacrificing two other squads of units simply to guarantee my 'veteran' squad's retreat. They've earned the right to keep on kicking.

For the most part my attachments are formed onto a commander unit and his retinue though as they cut a bloody swathe through enemy forces.

On one particular RA3 map I ended up buying over 10 Yuriko Omega's simply because she kept dying and I loved the fact that she could toss tanks and boats into the sky. It amused me to no end.

Same here. DoW and other Warhammer games i get a connection with a certain squad. No other games have I felt any other connection, except when my camp get swarmed in Warcraft 3 as I watch the humans raid my orc camp leaving no survivors. It's difficult to watch

Depends on the game I suppose... If I have like a squad of troops that survives and is succesful for a long time but then get slaughtered I feel a little bad.

Eheheh... there are of course a lot of SC classics "GAH! WHO LET LOOSE THE LAB MONKEYS!?" - "SIR, stop clicking me". Then they're interrupting by the all-too familiar sound of rt-rt-rt-rt-rr*booM* *UArgh*

I find it hard to sympathise with streams of numbers and letters that tell my screen to make little lights go red and fall down on my monitor.

I don't play a lot of RTS's, but I have played a few demos on my 360, and if my troops die, I don't really care. I'll usually just think to myself "Oh well. You can be easily replaced. Moving on.", and sometimes I'll send them on suicide missions for no reason at all. One time while playing the Endwar demo, after I had already won and just needed to wipe out the remaining enemies or wait until the time runs out, I dropped a WMD on the last enemy base and made several units go to the exact location where it would hit just for the hell of it... I think I might be a bit messed up.

However, in Overlord and Pikmin, if even one of my minions gets killed, I immediately feel as if it only died because of me and then I get very sad before vowing to avenge its death by making all of my other minions attack and kill the murderer. If I mess up and get a large number killed, I freak out and stop playing the game for several hours or days or I stop playing entirely. I can't help it, I love the little guys.

Well I had a feeling like this but it wasn't on a rts, was on halo 2. Trying to save every marine I came across. Their AI didn't help at times either.
