New user here... Wanted to ask something bout me1.

Does collecting the insignias, resources, assari whatchamacallits affect the story in any way? Like resources help alliance defeat geth in the end?
The resources certainly help if you carry data over as you will start ME2 with a good supply of resources for research, so in a way they do help but in ME their purpose is experience and cash benefit only, really!
As for the other things you mentioned, not really, they are just extra experience really and for completionists (unless they serve some purpose in 3 lol)

Yes. Overhyped, underdeveloped, bug-ridden, and repetative. I must confess I haven't picked up ME2 yet and only got Dragon Age 2nd hand so apparently missed half the content but seriously, compared to the masterpieces which were KotOR and Jade Empire they were short, poorly written, bugged, and just left me feeling like playing the older games in spite of the fact they look tatty by comparison.

I have to agree that you are 100% correct on Fable 2 being overhyped for what it was...
I was actually discussing Fable #1. Two was okay, comparatively. I felt pretty betrayed by #1. And then they brought out, slap in the face-style, The Lost Chapters. "For another $100, you can get the same game again, but better! :D" is what they said to me. "Fuck you" is what I said to them.

Yeah, I agree. I admire his passion, and zeal for game-making. I love the big ideas he has. I just have zero faith left in him. He's burned me way too many times. Just about every game post-Black & White was a huge letdown. And I didn't follow Black & White's leadup, so that's probably why I wasn't disappointed with it.

I will probably get around to trying ME2 at some point in time...
Don't. If you seriously did not enjoy Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2's combat-heavy, interface and mechanic-lite, background cleaning gameplay will do nothing for you. I like it. Less than #1, but I do like it. I love the dialogue, and the setting. It -feels- science fiction, which I love. The lore they invented is awesome, too. But if you don't dig that from the first one, the second will make you think worse.

Oh, and it loads data from your #1 save. So the game is about twice as good having finished the original. Just putting that out there, too.

When ME first came out I didn't like it at all but last week I got a copy of it again for really cheap, loved it, and instantly went over to ME2. I think I have DA to thank as playing that brought back ME memories and I had been meaning to try it again for a while.

Wow, it's true. Popular becomes popular to find unpopular. Or maybe it's just more noticeable.

Anyways, I loved both Mass Effects. They go with the rare bunch of games that make me truly happy.

i didnt like mass effect at all but i think that could be because im not into the whole space thing. i did like dragon age, but kind of lost interest half way through ( i do plan on going back and finishing tho). now i absolutly hated everything about mass effect but it certainly doesnt bother me that other people do.

I never played Dragon Age, so I can't comment. But Mass Effect? Hell yes it's overrated.

The gameplay is ok, but nothing special. Kinda reminds me of a less developed version of MDK...

The storyline though? It's not brilliant, and it certainly isn't original. (Ancient Machines bent on eradicating all life? Because that's not been done before...) There's more plot holes than a witty metaphor I can't think of right now. It's also extremely prejudiced against inorganic life, what's up with that anyhows? I've seen a handful of vidjagames where sentient machines are ever portrayed as anything other than the ultimate evil, and only one comes to mind where they're actually good guys...
I'm assuming you haven't played ME2 if that's what you think Bioware are setting all the inorganic life up to be.

How astute of you to predict that I'm not the sort of person that forks out £30 on the sequel to a game I didn't really like. I quiver in anticipation of your next brilliant deduction ^^

I agree with you OP. I tried ot get into the game after hearing all the praise here but couldn't. It helped me relaize that story is not as important to me in games as I thought it was. I found ME boring and did not like the controls.

I've played both and here's my two word answers for each game:
Dragon Age Origins-FUCK yes
Mass Effect 1 and 2-FUCK no.

I really enjoyed both of them a lot. I would say that they are both worthy of the praise, although the two are fairly different. ME2 is much more FPS style than the original.

Okay I haven't played either of those, but I can safely say I probably won't like either of them.

I'm a JRPG man. I have played Oblivion, KOTOR, and Fallout 3, and the only one I liked was Fallout. I know that isn't much experience, but I've been told that ME is like KOTOR..

Blah blah blah...

Yeah they're over-hyped, but what mainstream game isn't? I personally generally only play older games, well if you call the PS2 old. Generally PS2 backwards I play, back to the SNES

Off-Topic: My bro calls The Incredible's sooo old, but thinks a book written in 1987 isnt. Weird.

I respect your opinion so no flaming.

Having enjoyed ME and ME2 as well as still playing DA:O I believe that the bioware games are deserving of the hype because they really are that good with the story telling and the fun combat and characters and such.

Whether a game deserves its hype is an opinion more than anything. I mean the same could be said for Bioshock 2 which was hyped as amazing and then became in my opinion a steaming pile of crap.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.

Other RPGs such as Oblivion and Fable gave life to their worlds in a way that Bioware just hasn't, and that's what matters to me, I want to feel like I care about the characters as people and not just see them as a tool to filter dialogue and story through.
I'll add that I don't think they're bad games, they just seem too lifeless. If you get what I'm saying.
What 'life' exactly did you find in Oblivion? I didn't get too much into Fable 2 as I had this strange feeling that I had done this before, but The Elder Scrolls games and Fallout 3 suffer from an extreme lack of livliness.

I find DA:O just another copy/pasted JRR fantasy, with good writing.

As for ME, it's very well made and I did enjoy it, problem for me is its obvious Bioware just wanted to make their own version of Star Wars.

The Mass Effect series is great.

I wasn't a big fan of Dragon Age, though. I loved Bioware's other RPGs (Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment), but Dragon Age just didn't grab me in the same way.

Does anyone else think ME is overhyped and overpraised?
What, Windows ME? It was terrible! It was overhyped, sure, but it didn't get any praise and it deserved all the scorn that was directed at it!

I don't know about the hype, I didn't really follow gaming news.

But overpraised?

Many may think it is, but in my opinion it's the best game I've ever played, Planescape: Torment being the very close second.

But this is a matter of preference, and I appreciate it that you didn't flame.
