Does using the dodge roll in SSBB make you cheap? and other questionably cheap techniques.

no it's only gay if your friends have played the game like, twice and you're relentlessly beating the shit out of them. at least try to play at their level.

I usually play with some of my friends who play the game rather competitively.

I, however, do not.

I simply go batshit with Metaknight.

Somehow I come in second most of the time. It really angers my friends. =)

Dodging and blocking is the most vital aspect of any fighting game.

Why do people not realize this?

The dodge roll is only cheating if you're playing Lucario.
Please tell me how.

He's my main, I need to know!

On the other hand, there are people out there who will insist that the only "real" way to play involves everyone using the same character, on Final Destination every time, with items turned off. Otherwise known as <url=http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StopHavingFunGuys>Stop Having Fun Guys.
I deal with a mild version of these people. They're not nearly stupid enough to say people should all play the same character (and we have most of them represented), and they at least extend their "random stage" selection to also include Battlefield and Smashville, but I occasionally have to fight tooth and nail for Green Hill Zone, Distant Planet, or Pirate Ship. And forget about Big Blue or Halberd...

Though I do consider myself lucky that they're actually just a small minority. I can typically wrangle adding other, relatively inoffensive stages to the mix (Shadow Moses, Castle Siege, Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon Stadium, and the like) with most of the crowd. And we tend to play without items (except Smash Balls every so often) just as a matter of course.

Speaking of...

The only things that make you a fag in SSBB is if you use Final Smashes or you have items on. Items should be off!
Just last week, for literally the first time in years of playing the games, I played a few matches against actual humans with all items turned on. I was truly astounded at how fun it was.

I can still understand the pretension towards having items off, since the game can still be fun with just the standard characters (as long as you can have some fun stages, too), but now I recognize that that's what it is: a pretension.

No your friends just suck XD

lol i can beat most of my friends at it - they dont specifically mention me using those moves but they dont really use them at all - actually, i had to TEACH them to use them! XP but they get a lil annoyed if i choose to purposefully dodge them and ONLY dodge them - no attacking them - just dodging lol try it - it'll be funny!

No, in fact dodging is easily the most useful ability in that SSBB. Dodging also makes the matches you play that much more epic. My friends and I have a rule: you can dodge but don't overdo it.

Just keep doing what you're doing, if your friend complains again, tell him to learn to dodge and shield or you'll just keep beating his ass. SS is a game of sink or swim: use everything the game gives you to survive or you'll never be better.

Your friends suck. No, really. Go watch really high-level play. Nothing used is standard. It's doge roll, spot dodge, shield, air dodge, and Z-slide, which is technically a broken physics move that shouldn't exist. I'm fond of Links's Z-Slide and Snake's Mortar Slide.

They suck. They suck horribly. The suck quotient is unbelievable. The amount of their suck would shame an industrial-strength vacuum cleaner in quicksand, and push anthropomorphized black holes to incredulous laughter.

I mean, come on, rolling?! That's been in every single one of the games, it's laughably easy to do, a necessary component of any level of play above "infant," and has rather easy workarounds. If I had a quarter every time I rolled right into someone's fully-charged smash, I could live in an arcade for a month.
This is comedy gold.

OT: same as above.
I cant tell you how many times its saved my butt.
The only tatics i frown upon are Edgehogging and Self Distructing on purpos(Take it like a man and LET ME HAVE MY POINTS!)
If ypur wondering why i didnt say Item Spaming, its because i pride myself for being able to hit people with Deku nuts while they are offstage trying to recover.
Im also good at setting traps, especaly with Samus..... Ammunition Crate FTW!

I'm playing SSBB with friends, I keep winning, mostly because I use my shield and dodge rolls. My friends start yelling how I'm a fag, gay, an asshole, etc... because I use those moves, but I see nothing wrong with it, and I think they just suck because they don't use them.

Who's right, am I an ass for using the dodge roll, or do they just suck?

And to keep a discussion going, what else do you use that others call cheap, or vice versa?
It's not cheap at all. Your just better at the game then they are. Dodging is half the fight. That would be like playing a fighting game without blocking...which it kinda is.

My friend and I have games that go on for a long time with both of us constantly dodging and trying to get an attack in. I personally think it shows skill.

Besides, read the book "Playing to Win." If your a winner, you'll do what it takes. If your friend was a winner, he would figure out how to beat that or do it himself. He's a loser, a scrub, that's it.

I was ridiculed for always playing as Mitsurugi in Soul Calibur. The thing is, i'm not very good at fighting games but whenever i play as him i become almost demonically unbeatable. I don't know why. I get whupped with every other character. So I stick with him. One of my friends (at the time) was 'extremely' good with every single character, hated the fact that he couldn't beat me as Mitsurugi. He'd actually come close to foaming at the mouth.

It's not cheap. You mastered a technique everyone is supposed to know. Good job.

People don't play with me when i pick fox or wolf, because when they jump on top of my tank, i just go up and kill em. It's quite fun :D

Any glitches are also cheap...

And for CoD4, Radio Jammer or whatever is cheap as hell when you are playing a map with a radar.

I punch my friends in the balls while playing CoD4 and then kill them.

They call that cheap for some reason. I don't. I call it politics.
I know what politician I'm voting for...
As for the dodge roll though, I do it quite often but lately I have been trying more to do the plain dodge. I think it looks better and is more embarrassing for the other player if I do it right. But no, I don't think it's cheap because everyone can do it and easily at that.

Seriously? You spawn with them. Shut up.

This makes me want to punch my cat. It's hardly a cheap tactic if EVERYONE starts with a few grenades/the weapon of derision. I'm guilty of "nade spamming" but it's a perfectly legit tactic since just about any military themed shooter has you begin with grenades. GAH! I just need to go frag some fools now.

EDIT: I've had people get ticked at me for using counters in the DOA games and I just laugh. They're not that tough to learn, just to time in the fourth game, and everyone can do them with equal effectiveness. Quit whining.

It's in the game. Use it. Characters and items are in the games. Use them.

The only thing I ever call cheap is incessant attack spamming. Long range projectiles in fighting games (partially due to getting tired of hearing the attack name). That, or having the other team load up with grenade launchers in FPS's and blasting us at the start of the (no respawn) match. CoD4 incident forever burned into my mind.
