Does using the dodge roll in SSBB make you cheap? and other questionably cheap techniques.

Dodging and shielding is fine....Its not gay or faggotish at all. Now if you do want gay or faggotish, just think of all the gay little faggots on PSN or XBL that play SFIV, pick Zangief and do little lariats until they're close enough for one of those little spinning piledrivers. Thats pretty gay, but thats why I use Gen.

Intentionally winning a round in any fighting game by using block/chip damage or throwing in general is pretty damn gay too. Actually it's about as gay as you can get before shov.... nevermind the imagery.

As long as it's not glitching, cheating, or hacking. It's perfectly fine, and people who think anything is "cheap" should be tazered to the fullest extent of my law.

Dodge move is awesome. It's part of the game, so they should just quit their crying and just suck it up.

Me and my brother play with dodge. We usually end up doing the dodge at the same time and it's really weird. He dodges me but I dodge him as he attacks and on ward.

Seriously? You spawn with them. Shut up.

There are certain cheap characters in Super Smash Brothers, but dodging isn't cheap. It's annoying, yes. I hate it when people do it, but it's just because I haven't really mastered it yet. Everyone can do it.
While every game has undeniably cheap things in it (grenades/sword in Halo, the M16/knife in CoD4, repeated attacks and constant blocking in fighting games, spamming certain spells in RPGs etc.), yes, these things are cheap (and those who say otherwise are usually people who use it themselves and use the weak justification of 'well, it means that people have to be good enough to beat me' to not only boost their ego but make their actions seem not only fair but as if they are playing the game the 'right' way).

On the other hand, some people do make mountains out of molehills, some things that are slightly edgey or unfair do not deserve the waves of abuse some people will give players who use them (for example, Snipers in FPS games will often whine about shotgun use due to the fact that at close range it can score an easy one-hit kill without much in the way of precision aiming, what they fail to realise is that not everyone wants to snipe and some people prefer a more direct approach that requires a different set of skills and that it is balanced by the fact that said shotgunner has to get up close to their target to be effective, in other words, if you do die then it's your own bloody fault for letting them get that close).

In the old Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi beat 'em up. Darth Vader was considerably harder than anyone else and easy to spam attack the same move to win. That was cheesey.

I have a "friend" that considers anyone using a shotgun in Call of Duty to be a cheap tactic as well.

In the OPs case, it doesn't sound cheesy at all, merely using an ability that others find frustrating as they probably suck at using it.

EDIT: people complain that I use Metaknight and Pit because apparently they are "spammers". They are legitimate characters with legitimate moves, if you cannot defend against them you suck.
Ah, but Meta Knight's got an exploit that renders him invincible, that's not really legitimate now is it?

SSBB. Oooooh boy. I see nothing wrong with dodging, although I can only basic dodge. I find that all the characters have at least one overpowered move, even if it is just their Final Smash. Look at the Ice Climbers. I have yet to see them play well at all, but that Iceberg move is one nasty MF on most stages. In the middle, Lucas. Excellent attacks(yes, I do use PK attacks a lot, thank you very much, but everyone else uses goddamn Ike, and Lucas is light.), but his FS is the exact reason dodges are perfectly fine. Then, Snake and Ike. Heavy, decent speed, and extremely powerful attacks, and their FS' will land at least one kill if the player can aim worth shit.

That was just my rant on OPness. You don't have to read it, other than the first sentence. I prefer playing without items, which is for everyone's benefit. Lucas/Fox team/Pit can't heal himself at 16% per shot/reflect laser shots, and other people can't gain more instant kill attacks. A few items are fine, like banana peels, Screw attack badges, lame little things like that. Pokeballs, hammers, bats, gone. Stages don't matter much, I only protest when it comes to Metroid stages. Glitches, hacks, exploits, GTFO mah house, jackass. Thus the barely readable rants end. Thank you your time.

Oh, wait. Yeah, fine, Lucas is a bit cheap, admitted, but again, I have to play with a bunch of guys who only use heavies and Kirbys stone form drop. Find me a heavy that dies under 100% like the rest of us before you flame me.

sorry, your friends just suck. If they can't handle a player that can dodge, they may just need to start playing a different game that involves buttons that can only attack and defend i.e. Oblivion.

-all items
-game modes that aren't stock (time and coin are all about lucky hits)
-freaking final smashes. One of the worst additions to the game, IMO. It didn't just unbalance the game, it toppled it over.
-tripping. Whoever added that should be shot.
-almost every stage that isn't final destination/battlefield. They all randomly and unfairly kill you in some way.
-chain-grabbing.
-using the same move three or more times in a row.
-scrolling stages.
-handicaps
-Ike. He is ridiculously overpowered, and can kill lighter characters at 40% with a non-smash move. 'Nuff said.
-Pit. His recovery is like 500 feet, he can block projectiles, and if he traps you with his side-b move, you're a goner.
...so, basically, take everything fun out of the game?

Yeah, I'll stop. Don't get me started on why I think Melee is a better game, though. If I start on that, watch out.
*bites tongue*
No, I'm just saying if you want a completely fair match that can't be called cheap in any way, you need to follow most of those points. It eliminates all possible interference if you want to have a fair match at the competitive level.
Makes sense (except for Ike, Pit, chain-grabbing, and spamming). Makes me further glad that the people I play against aren't nearly that boring.

And "take out everything fun"? Since when are scrolling stages, tripping and getting automatically killed by ridiculously over-powered final smashes fun?
Tripping is a hazard I barely notice.

Rainbow Cruise, Big Blue, Summit, Castle Siege, Delfino Plaza, Halberd, Frigate Orpheon, Pirate Ship, and Mushroomy Kingdom (and Poke Flats from Melee) are some of the most fun stages in the game. I think the only stages I actually dislike are Warioware (really small), Flat Zone (ditto), 75M (confusing layout), and Final Destination (2nd worst stage in the game, behind 75M).

And no, I don't find getting killed by Final Smashes fun. I find running after and fighting over final smashes, avoiding others' final smashes and hitting them with my own, and watching the spectacular results (possibly including my death) to be fun. I think the only exceptions would be Sonic and Game&Watch, who are fast and air-competent enough to beat me to the punch 9 times in 10.

Truth be told, though, if I can select any items to be always available, smash balls would be third behind assist trophies and pokeballs...

I don't think it's cheap at all, I'm sure it could get annoying fighting someone that's really good at shield rolling though. Whenever I select Fox, my friends cry a little bit. From a combination of the dodging and using Fox's energy shield as a melee weapon, I can drive them nuts. I've never been accused of cheating though.

OK, you're not understanding what I'm saying. This thread is asking if you find shield-rolling cheap. I said no, it's strategy. I then listed several things that are almost universally considered to be cheap by tournament players, etc. This was directed to the OP, since we were talking about cheapness in the game.

You obviously like playing Brawl casually with friends, which is fine. However, if you want to have a real match based purely on skill, you can't have items/scrolling stages and the like, as much of that is based on luck. Yes, it adds to the fun and makes it more interesting when just chilling with people. But when the game is played at the competitive level, you can't have these things.

If you find that "boring", that's OK. I, and some others, like to take the game a bit more seriously than that. We just disagree on some things, is all.
Hmmm...on second thought, it looks like I was reading too much into your words and took offense based on that. Some of the people I deal with a lot are annoyingly insistent on imposing tournament values and ideas into our casual play, but that's clearly not the case here. I apologize.

They call that being cheap? Your friends suck at that game, dude. Hard.

Plus, they don't know the definition of "cheap" until they've faced someone who can do Dedede's chain grab...

Dodgeroll: standard
Spot dodge: intermediate
move blocking (pk fireing an eggroll for example): advanced depending on how you look at it.
Wavedashing: 'pro'

If I were you I'd teach them the tricks and go easy on them. You have wifi by any chance?

Yes, but unfortunately they took wavedashing out of Brawl...

Then again, I'm friends with the best Snake player in the Northeastern US(to anyone who pays attention to the tournaments, his name is Fatal) and from what I saw back in the days of Melee, the pros basically went past the point where wavedashing was necessary.
