I am a huge history nut. It's my favourite course at school, and I've looked up the family history more times than I care to mention.

No, you are not alone.

I also love history. I am particularly interested military history of the 20th century.
My favorite non-engineering class I took in university was History of the Third Reich, which was made all the better by being taught by a professor and a TA who both had (or were working on) doctorates in this particular subject.

Always have been interested in history, mostly in the various geopolitical shifts at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Century.

I also love history, particularly the Revolutionary War, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient China, The Civil War...

Actually, I pretty much love all of it.

I always loved history, which is why I think I love cracked.com so much (they do a lot of articles on all things history). I always love to learn what happened in the past. It kinda sucks that my high school history class was boring.......I mean how do you make ancient battles boring?!?!?!?!

I loved the shit out of history when I was still in school. It was my favourite subject, aside from English.
I didn't really keep up with it when I dropped out (because I am a lazy asshole), but I do still love learning the odd tidbit.

It looks like I'm the first person to post here that really disliked history in school. It was boring and the classroom smelt of piss.

i've always loved history, and i've always wanted to punch the faces of people who say it's a useless subject :/ i'd argue that it's about 20x more useful than calculus...

Why is it that when people say they are fans of history, they invariably meant to say they are fans of military history or fans of historical unrest?

I think that engineering and religious history are so much more interesting...but they don't have guts flying around, do they? Given that you've already admitted your aim to take over the world, why don't you just admit that you're really a fan of violence and revolution?

For those of you are actually into history, rather than trying to find out which others of you are trying equally hard to appear "smart," check this book out:

I hate it, mostly because my history tests don't focus on the important matter.
But rather on the cousin of Hitler and how he liked ice-cream.(joke, but you get the picture)

I'm a pretty big history buff, especially the following:

- Cultural history of humanity as it transitioned from hunting and gathering to settled food production. I love tales of the Dawn of Civilization, both in the Fertile Crescent and in Mesoamerica. Needless to say, I loved Guns, Germs, and Steel. One of my favorite books.

- Republican Rome, 390-c. 140 BC. From the sack of Rome by the Gauls to the beginnings of expansion outside the Italian peninsula. I'm not terribly keen on the Imperium. Rome was more interesting when it was the city and its immediate environs.

- Europe, 1453-1914. From the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. I am fairly well-known for my oft-stated opinion that Gavrilo Princip didn't just assassinate a minor noble---he put the bullet in the very heart of civilization itself. The shift in power from the Old World to the New and the economic rise of the United States presaged a vile, barbaric era in human history---a Dark Age with a gilded marketing-driven coating.

Big history nut as well. As well as alt history. I'm mostly interested in the areas that focus around wars, but the politics can be pretty interesting too. Not to mention that the culture at certain times can be really intriguing.

I also like maps. Historical maps can be so fun to look at.
