I listen to lots of genres, so no one has ever actually told me to expand. They've said "Hey, do you listen to (insert artist/band here)? I think you'd like them." Usually, they're right. I'm always willing to expand my musical horizons, but I've never been told I should.

Yes, about when I was 14. And I discovered indie. And it was the fucking best thing that ever happened to me.

I get told exactly the opposite, by the members of my band.

They say I should be more focused in what I listen, so that I will be more focused in what I play. I answered: "BUT DREAM THEATER IS SOOOO COOOOOL!"

...YES, I do like Dream Theater
Tell them to fuck off, and its better for the band if you listen to more music. Phil Anselmo said it best. 'All the old bands are better, because all the old guys, when they were making music they took inspiration from there 10 favorite bands and try be like them. Now a days everything sounds the same and it sucks, that's because people only seem to try sound like their favorite 2 bands'

It was something along them lines anyway, bottom line is diverse music = good, in more ways than one.

Chavs told me that I should listen to rap and not metal... I responded with my middle finger.
Pfft, the f*ck do chavs know about hip hop anyway? They're the last type of people who should be criticising other's taste in anything.

*[small]One caveat, I don't consider rap or it's spin-off genres to actually be music. That's poetry spoken rhythmically to some form of musically accompaniment. The accompaniment is music, but the thing as a whole is not.[/small]
Instead of being offended at this last part (because I know what you were getting at), I'll only correct it. Rap is neither a genre nor music, rapping is the primary ingredient to the musical genre hip hop, just like lyrics are an important aspect to almost any other genre, except IMO the lyrics are far more important than any other genre, even though the beat is also very important as well.

Either way, music and lyrics are pretty much symbiotic. Poetry on songs are still lyrics, and to say lyrics in hip hop aren't as much of the song as the instruments behind it is pretty much the equivalent of denouncing lyrics as a whole, and that's silly. If it's not part of the music why bother with it in the first place?

(there's a far better version out there, but this shows how the song is done)

I don't care what music others like, if someone asks me "What music do you listen to?" I respond with, I listen to music that I like, I would imagine that you do the same.

Before, yes. Now I'm open to more forms of music. Metal (my favorite), alternative rock, electronic, country, classical, etc.

I listen to new music all the time. I can't count how many times I've bought cd's just because I saw the album cover and went "ooooooOOOOOOooooo!"

I have pretty diverse taste in music, myself.
I have the usual post punk stuff: Cure, Siouxsie, Smiths
Decent Enough metal: Animetal, Sex Machineguns, Megadeth
Good enough rap: Common, Public Enemy, MC Chris, Duane and Brando
Chiptunage: Sabrepulse, Anamanaguchi, Shirobon
Plenty of classical, or any other genre you could ask for.
I'm daring enough to put the ICP next to Morrisey.

People I know would already know how varied my musical tastes are, and those who would suggest certain music to me would likely be making good suggestions so it wouldn't bother me.

Honestly, it's more often that I'm the one who suggests others expand their musical horizons.

I flipped the bird because they only listen to Pop themselves and refuse to listen to anything I listen to <_<
My sister is like that. I'm always telling her to listen to something that hasn't been endorsed by the Disney Channel or overplayed on the pop radio station.

As for myself, I have never been told to listen to better music... except by my sister... I think it's clear she doesn't really know what good music is.

I told them that I was open to expansion of musical taste, but did not consider listening to awful pop music and expanding musical taste to be the same thing.

I told someone at work that I have over 8,000 songs on my computer and this guy went on about how that isn't something to brag about and I should be ashamed because of how little it is, yet for the past month or two, all has listened to is Tool.
dude. 8,000? i have like 200 and my wallet has already disintegrated. how much do you actually listen too?
Right now I have about 570ish on my iTouch... About half of that is from when I borrowed CD's, put the tons I own on there, and other random stuff I've got from people (like a huge stack of mixed demo CD's a family friend gave me). Some other bad thing that I no longer do... But I have a ton of punk, metal, christian, and random stuff I found laying around my house on there... I figure some day I might like it [again], so why not keep it on there? Doubt I'll ever like christian music again, but who knows?

If anything, people should listen to music from Europe. There are VERY few American bands that are worth listening to anymore. In fact, there are few bands. Everything is about singers. That's all pop is. No bands. But all I listen to is metal, and I tell people they should listen to it because it usually talks about relevant things.

Not really, because my top 3 most listened to artists are Led Zeppelin, Eminem, and Lady Gaga.
I listen to a wide range of music.
I agree with this lad here. My music folder has all kinds of crap from The Offspring to Jamiroquai to Run-DMC to Beck. I appreciate all music and like pretty much at least one artist from all genres. Someone did tell me to listen to more music before, I listed a few band names and asked did they ever hear of them. They didn't, that shut them up.
