Yeah, you heard me. Full game. By some strange twist of fate, Duke Nukem got released four days early in Australia. How do you like that, America? Huh? Huh?

*ahem*

Anyway, I pre-ordered the game out of morbid curiosity. I just had to see what kind of creature is born of three(?) developers and 14 years. After playing about 4 hours of the PC version, I am very unimpressed. But rather then bombard you with opinions, I'll throw down some hard facts.

- Yes, there is a 2-weapon limit. Although you also get pipe bombs, trip mines and Halo-style melee on top of that.
- Yes, there is rapidly regenerating health.
- Yes, you will be using cover on a fairly regular basis. At least on medium difficulty.
- Yes, the vehicles control like arse.
- Yes, the mighty boot is gone. You can only kick enemies during scripted finisher animations.
- Yes, movement speed is fairly slow. You can sprint for a limited time. After a few seconds, Duke starts gasping like an asthmatic.
- Yes, You frequently have to mash a prompted button to open doors or finish off stunned enemies.
- Yes, you die fairly easily. Some non-boss enemies will finish you in three hits.
- Yes, the demo is an accurate representation of the full game.

EDIT: Yes, the game is eight hours long.

...

Okay, now I start bombarding you with opinions. Feel free to ignore everything below.

In a nutshell, if you are looking for an old-school run-and-gun murder-'em-up... then look elsewhere. This isn't it. Serious Sam is better. Painkiller is better (just). Hell, even Bulletstorm is better. And this is coming from someone who isn't even a huge fan of run-and-guns. However, it would be a ridiculous stretch to call it a CoD-clone (as some tremendously stupid people have). It feels more like playing a combination of Halo and Half-Life 2, but with every single good thing mercilessly ripped out and the protagonist replaced with a colossal wanker.

I should note that it's not all bad. For example, there are some creative and amusing sequences involving Duke being shrunk down to about five inches tall. Navigating kitchen shelves as mini-Duke as he spouts bad one-lines in a hamster voice has an undeniable appeal. Also, there is a bit of humour in there. If you are truly determined to buy and enjoy this game, then this is where you'll probably have to extract your money's worth. If a handful of vaguely amusing pop-culture references and snide digs at well known games is worth $60 to you, then Duke Nukem will provide.

I guess the most damning thing I can say about that game is that I was frequently bored while playing it. This is not one of those games that keeps you up into the small hours. Rather, it's a game where, after an hour or so, you start wondering if your time would be better spent doing the dishes or tidying up the yard.

EDIT: Oh yeah, almost forgot. There are naked breasts. Quite a lot of them in fact. If you find the prospect of polygonal boobs and blunt innuendo genuinely appealing then, well... don't worry, that whole puberty thing will be over soon.

And it could've been so much more...the gameplay at least if they made a few small changes.

Shame.
I was really rooting for a 60km/h running tank with 40 different weapons who doesn't afraid of anything.
But alas, it was too good to be true.

Regardless, I still want to pick it up. I have a feeling I will enjoy it. I have no other expectations than going into a game that features Duke Nukem as the main character.

Why am I not surprised? Very few companies are willing to throw themselves back to the (debatable) good-ol-days of the shooter. They are more interesting in making a buck and it shows. Instead of returing to what made the original dukes great they would rather try to just use other tried and true mechanics to make more money.

I am disappoint in short

I'm not surprised that 3D and Gearbox would be too scared to release Duke Nukem Forever as a throwback to the original 3D. It's why I didn't preorder it.

Well sounds like all the goodwill Gearbox got from me due to Borderlands has in 1 game been ripped to shreds. (sigh)
Well if Gearbox does make another Duke Nukem game hopefully they go back to the good ole days of Duke Nukem 3D in gameplay. If they do then I'll write off DNF as having most of its horrid ripping out of gameplay be the fault of 3D Realms and whoever else worked on it. Until that time however Gearbox will have to shoulder some of the disappointment of mine from this horrid attempt @ a Duke Nukem sequel.
At least Serious Sam HD was a good solid remake of the original that kept to the same style

Yes and wait for a sequel that has Max Payne as a bald guy in a tank top with no returning characters besides him.

For me Max Payne died at number 2. It ended pretty well in my opinion and shouldn't be continued.

Well since gearbox only finished it off I wouldn't really blame all that much on them(except for the 2-weapon limits). And what I understood the way they where working with DNF was that they wanted to stay in front of the genre by copying stuff that worked in other games, and as thus it kinda is expected that there is nothing new in the game.

2 weapon limit.

Lost me right there... Thanks for fucking up a long awaited classic... Jeez :(

The boot removal and limited sprint put the nail in the coffin for me.

Well, I probably will buy when it's 5 bucks on steam...

They haven't been clear as to what the story is going to be for 3, but there are screenshots of him as good ol' detective Max. As for the ending, you probably know that there are two that imply different outcomes. I personally preferred the ending when you finished it on a harder difficulty after your first playthrough.

Edit: Are there any official reviews for Duke Nukem forever out yet? Brief google search turned up nothing.
Edit 2: Serious Sam 3....soon...

So Yahtzee was right. Damn.

I think it would have been better if it didn't come out. If it comes out but sucks then there is very little chance for it to be done again the right way.

As far as I am concerned, The Duke was, and still is dead. Only now, I can't see him resting peacefully. :( :( :(

Not surprising really. I mean taking out that it couldn't have possibly lived up to the hype, the current version had a relatively short development time. Sure it has been kicking around for over 10 years but it wasn't that long ago gearbox got a hold of it and they probably had to start from close to scratch. Still doesn't quite explain why they didn't go for the wacky fun style and instead chose the style we see before us. Maybe it was the only way for a publisher to give them the money, who knows.

Either way I wasn't too interested in it before and now I doubt I'll even play it anytime soon.

I think that I'm glad someone got it before us and wasted their money on it and not ours.

OT: Can't say I ever expected DNF to be any good. A game that has as much trouble as it's had during it's time in development is bound to end up being a steaming pile of crap by the time it makes it to market. I think people fell in loved with the idea of DNF and not the game itself, and thanks to it's constant vaporware status over the last decade have either written it off as something that would never be or hyped it up for themselves way beyond what it could ever be.

Seriously, people are expecting way too much out of this game. Of course it won't live up to the 14 year hype. Anyone hyping it really needs to calm down and realize there is no possible way that it's going to match up to anything these days. It needs to live up to Duke standards and from what I've seen of the game, it does.

A shame. I understand that the developers were trying to keep the game in line with modern trends, and somewhere in the development cycle, they lost track of what made Duke 3D so popular. I just pray Serious Sam 3 doesn't follow that example.

The Steam page mocks things like cover systems and regenerating health. The only "modernisms" I can see from the trailer are how it has ironsights

Yeah the game is disappointing and all the things we know about its history are obvious in the game.

Once back in 2009 when the leakage happened a former 3D Realms employee said: "The game will never end.Whenever George (the main designer) sees a feature on a new game,he asks from us to implement it in DNF.It's a circle without an end".

Additional features have stopped being implemented, but hidden in that statement is the reason that the game fails:

George Brussard thought that he would create the best game if only he would just copy features from other FPS games and add them to his game.
The fact is that we saw all of them before, and done better.

*Lots of things are destroy-able but their animations are bad (if they have). Red Faction series done a far better job regarding destroy-able world.

*Dismemberment is there, but we saw it before in Soldier of Fortune done better.

* The game have iron sights, but its so easy to hit an enemy without using them (at least on pc) with the accuracy a mouse provides even with aim assist off, that makes this feature useless.

* It has health regeneration, but we also saw that on Halo better executed, where it also fitted the game, but it doesn't fit with Duke.

In the end we see that features of the greatest FPS games are implemented on DNF,but that doesn't make DNF great.
The way they were executed is mediocre and some of them where added without a serious reason, while so many years later they are not exciting anymore..

All I needed to know. It's a shame, but the Duke is dead. Long live the Duke.
