My hopes were in vain. The dust had barely settled before another goblin ambush struck, this time a combination of sword and wrestler goblins.

Alas, with Mafol out of commission, it was left up to Tun and a few hastily conscripted farmers to fend off the attack. The result was not pretty. The goblins sought retribution for the dismembering of their comrades-in-arms, and exacted revenge by dismembering three of our dwarves, including Tun. Additionally, both war dogs were dismembered and killed, the wolf was injured, and Iden Stinthadbiban was horribly mutilated. Aside from major wounds to his right arm and both his legs, his left arm was cut off at the shoulder -- it's a miracle he's still alive.

After action report:
Dwarves: 3 dead, 1 severely wounded
Fighting animals: 2 dead war dogs, 1 wounded wolf
Goblins: 2 dead

Note the elves fleeing the trade depot like the tree-hugging wimps they are. I should have locked them in and left them to rot. It's not too late, I suppose...

27th Hematite 203

It appears there has been some question as to my competency in the handling of the first goblin ambush, in particular from the one calling himself MasterSqueak. He claims I should have made more use of the war animals posted at the entrance instead of sending in the woodcutters. I saw fit to remind him that I had only posted the woodcutters near the entrance -- it was only at the behest of their squad leader that they went on their charge. I will not be held responsible for the actions of the late Dodok. Further, the war animals proved to be woefully ineffective, as was so painfully evident in the second ambush. I may have also threatened to send MasterSqueak out to defend the fortress the next time a goblin raid struck if he thought he could do a better job, but it is inconsequential now. A wave of migrants has come and I have struck a hematite vein. I have already assembled a squad and begun training them. Although still two short of the traditional seven-dwarf squad (as specified in the Dwarven Tactics Field Manual), no more shall we rely on anemic war dogs to do the work of dwarves.

I have expanded a number of the fortresses' main byways to alleviate traffic, and revamped the agricultural system. Our dwarves shall enjoy a more varied diet. The famine is a thing of the past, and doesn't appear to have been serious anyway. I have also reorganized the workshop area to be more efficient and less confusing. Furthermore, I have appointed a dedicated clerk, to keep accurate counts on the fortresses' inventory. Now that we have a stable food system and real protection against invaders, I have begun a few construction projects.

Oh bother, what now? It seems MasterSqueak has claimed a mason's workshop...

If I survive my mood, I would like to be transferred to the military if I am not needed otherwise.

1st Granite 204

Well, it has been a year after I took the reins of the Adorable Apples of Evisceration, and at last I've had enough. I intend to pass along my position to the next sucker who comes by, much like was done to me. Besides, I think the work I've done here will guarantee my shot at a promotion. Until then, I shall remain here, ensuring all work is done to proper specification. Here is the State of the Fortress (now with 100% more accurate counts!)

Much has happened since the Second Ambush, and luckily few of those happenings were violent. Although the entirety of the crypt has not been smoothed out, I have placed enough coffins to bury all the dead from the past 3 years. I was truly shocked to find the 20-some coffins I had laid down nearly instantaneously filled with bleached, white dwarven bones, and in some cases the coffins were set aside for absent bodies. It was the work of the vicious, vicious fish, I was to find out later. More on that in a bit. Anyway, I have set up a small mausoleum over the entrance of the crypts. I intended to make my own humble tomb alongside my fallen comrades, but, it seems I chanced upon a sizable vein of Bituminous Coal in the process, thus delaying its construction. No matter, I don't expect to be here much longer.

Alas, another unfinished project were my entrance fortifications. I had hoped to construct a set of towers to house a new barracks, armory, and an archery range between the two towers over the entrance. They are not even halfway complete. I also began expanding the dining hall to accommodate our larger population, but was not able to finish the work.

But let's discuss what I did accomplish in my short reign:

I have dug out a few -- more luxurious -- quarters, and begun placing quarters into the level above the massive hematite vein. The fortress' agriculture has been brought into the 3rd century. I have reorganized the original farm plots so that now all six dwarven crops are represented. Further, I have built a walled-off hole allowing sunlight into part of the fortress, so that crops normally reserved for the outdoors may be grown inside the relative safety of the fortress. Additionally, I have established farmers' workshops and mills, so that we may reap the benefits of our diverse crops. Our drink selection is the envy of many a dwarf fortress.

Of minor note is the improvement of the fortress' logistics. I have widened hallways to improve the flow of traffic. I have reorganized many of the workshops and stockpiles, so that production is more streamlined.

I have also established a small but powerful military. With the exception of our lone immigrant marksdwarf and MasterSqueak (who was late in joining and is merely elite), the rest of the dwarves have become legendary wrestlers, and as such are ready to be armed with whatever weapons my successor deems appropriate. They are still missing a few bits of armor (gauntlets and helms), but there's plenty of magnetite and plenty of bituminous coal to fully equip them. The fortress guards need all their equipment, but I don't foresee them engaging in much combat.

Which brings me to the brief campaign I waged upon our fishy antagonists. After Kogsak (yes, that was his name) Sazirmetul, the fisherdwarf, was dragged into the river by a pike, I decided to wage war upon the terror-fish. The aquatic wildlife was not as harmless as I was led to believe. I ordered a few ramps constructed at the river bed so that future dwarves would not drown to death. Alas, the fish took a few chunks out of our mayor in the process. Although she was lightly wounded, she did drive her pickaxe through the skull of Drivenarrows the sturgeon. She should be recovered soon. Next, I sent our squad of highly-trained wrestler dwarves to bait the fish at the river's edge. The plan worked like a charm. Although one of the wrestler dwarves was dragged into the river, he was able to escape via the ramps after snapping the neck of the offending fish. Only two (three with Drivenarrows) fish succumbed to my nefarious plan, but the rest of the fish have cowered to the farther ends of the river, where they will hopefully remain. In the meantime, I have begin construction of a sort of platform/bridge to offer our marksdwarves a safe vantage point from which they might shoot any fish that might stray down the river.

As a parting note, I would like to include a few bits of miscellaneous news about the former leaders and other points of interest. MasterSqueak, as I said, volunteered for the military, where he is currently serving. Prior to joining the military, he completed a legendary artifact, which I will detail shortly. I have also assigned him three of his precious war dogs, to increase his chances of not dying. Besides that, there is nothing to report. He spends his days sparring and tearing the clothes off of other soldiers. I did finish the improvements to his tomb originally specified by Omni.

Speaking of Omni, he has not fared as well. The mayor insisted that he produce a pair of matching bags out of groundhog leather. We had neither groundhogs, nor groundhog leather, but Udil (the mayor) was insistent. After hopelessly failing to meet the deadline, Udil ordered the Captain of the Guard to beat Omni. He's alive, though currently sleeping off his wounds in the barracks. Perhaps it was karma that lead the mayor to be attacked by Drivenarrows, but I digress..

Two artifacts have been produced during my reign. One, as I said, was by MasterSqueak. A relatively unadorned mudstone quern which I have ordered placed in his quarters, in keeping with tradition. The other is the turtle shell amulet, "Gripriver the Glory of Raking," with another reference to our quaint water-borne friends.

Lastly, I offer this 3D view of our as-of-yet unimpressive entrance and my mausoleum.

And of course, the save file:

Okey, you're a dabbling Engraver yet. But there is potencial in you my son. You will once become a legendary :) It might take slightly longer for me to finish my turn, because I have to study the current economics as they are. It seems to work, but not very efficent. It will take quite some time to reasign all the dwarves to their current jobs.
And i've got a though week as well... soo.. Worst case szenario (I guess) would be: Finish @ Weekend.

Edit Tuesday:
I am done with the reasigning of the Dwarves. It's 28th Granite now D:
So... what are the levers for...? Doomsdaydevice? ;D

I reserve my genius for engraving, not smoothing. You'd expect me to waste my efforts on such pedestrian efforts?

Yeha, noticed that. Mine will not be Engraved. I prefere plain smooth walls. And a nice sarcophag... Like pure platinum *wuahahaha*
Im currently @ Autumn and I'm a bit tired... I think I'm just writing ways to much :-/ but those goblin fights are allways so interesting and fun ^_^ there is a special guest starring at one, but i wont spoil more :)So I'll finish my turn by tomorrow morning (European Time (Berlin, Bern Rome time zone)
Anyway... I hope 15 A4 pages arent to much (including quite some screenshots) (so far 15, but in winter there wont be much to say and document i guess)

One of the levers are decorative to the dwarf who made it, the other is Elf Trap.

Argh, I only just realised this whole thing was going on! Curses! Curses and calumny! Slot me in at your soonest possible convenience, whoever you are!

Or otherwise, I might like to try my Goblin Tower or Human Town mods. I could start another thread for that, but then there'd be two fortress threads going at once. Hrmmm.

...slot me in at your soonest possible convenience, whoever you are!

Also, well done to Gruthar, I enjoyed your turn and it was well-written.

Aha! I should've known it was all your idea, Omnidum! You'd've gotten away with it too if only you hadn't slept with those clowns.

Silence, traitor! It was you who left me to die back at the temple of arcane evil!
