Earth does have other names. In K-PAX the alien prot (pronouced proat) says that on his home planet of K-PAX the name for Earth is B-TIK.

Actually, we officially call it Sol 3 because planets are named after their sun and their relative position to it.
However, since we lived on it for quite a while and various cultures called it differently all the time, some of those names still stick around today in everyday use.
And why not? It is us who name things for our use. If some other entities call it differently but don't interact with us, how does it matter what they might call it?

Psh. What do we have to worry about? The only thing that could concievably knock us off our perch is cats evolving opposable thumbs and organisation.

'cos then we'd be fucked.

We did. We're the rulers of the planet so we decide what's what. You don't see ferrets objecting to our naming patterns.
What, Anglophones? We may have considerable power, but there are still other language groups that exist.

Srpski: Zemlja
Castellano: Tierra
Français: Terre
Which translated means...

I'm not a foreign language expert, but I'm fairly sure those all roughly translate into "Earth."

They're already taking over individual households!

I can't see your problem.

America used to be called "Where dragons be", "World's End" and later "India".
I'm also pretty sure that the Native Americans called their home something else than "America".
And the French don't call the "United States of America" "United States of America", they call it "Etats-Uni".

Europe used to be divided differently than it is now with different names, too.

Names are given by the ones who talk about it.
Just for the record Etats-Unis (there's an "s" at the end) is literally translated as "United States." At least for geography, I wouldn't say that names are given by the people that talk about it, rather by the people that live there.

That is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Earth is the name we as humans give it, it's the official name because we say it is.
Yeah, but if there was life on another planet, and we called it say...Suplam 4, which wasn't the name that they gave it, don't you think it's a bit stupid?

I think that is his point anyway. If an Alien race is coming to our planet for the first time, I wouldn't expect them to call it Earth, they'd probably have their own name for it. Until we corrected them.

ok so i take it you have all seen a film where aliens of some sort come to earth and call it earth.

what if earth has another name? what if it was abandoned by other beings and they called it something else?

and who decided it was to be called earth???
Thats like calling england some unintelligable savage name on the basis that savages lived here then left. We name ourselves, we dont take the names of past.

Well, in the Stargate universe it's called the Tauri homeworld, rather than actually having a name, the main species just marks it.

Actually Terra may be the Latin word for Earth but it didn't die out with Latin. Latin descendant languagues like Portuguese still use Terra.

It's nice that you're enjoying reading science fiction, but it's important to keep in mind what's actually true. I have nothing against thinking fantasy is true, but when it comes to fact, you should know what's actually true. It can cause problems. In the Lord of the Rings, trees rise up against Sarumon because he has been cutting down trees. But if everyone were to assume that deforestation was just fine becuase eventually the ents will come out and destroy all the chainsaws and things to cut down the forest with, that would NOT be fine. If you can't find a solution to a problem in your life, praying to God is NOT the solution. You need to think about the problem in a different way, you need to find other ways to solve it, you need consider if it's just you who has made a problem for yourself. If you believe fiction like the Bible literally, and hope that someday God will open the heavens and tell you what to do, you've got another thing coming. I don't mean to demean people's belief in God, but I spent several years of my life struggling with a problem I created for myself and prayed to God for help. If you thinks that's how the world works, you're taking fiction literally. I don't mean that fiction is wrong, just that non-fiction is a chronicling of current knowledge, and everything which isn't is considered non-fiction.

if Earth still had dinosaurs we'd call it Urth.

Anyway, aliens aren't going to care much for what we call it. They're simply going to strike it for resources.

well likely other names for earth would probably Sol 3 (sol being the name for the sun), Tera (Latin for earth) or for aliens "the planet that keeps broadcasting all this reality TV crap"
