I always liked the sound of Terra more to be honest.

What say you, my fellow Homo-Sapiens?
well, within my expansive megaverse there are hundreds of 'earths'(every new colony ship calls there planet 'earth') and only one homeworld which the more intellegent races refer to as 'terra originis' or 'the first earth', 'earth 001', or even 'the time-looped one'.

Sol 3 perhaps?
Officially, Sol is the name of the sun, but honestly, i would prefer if we did change it to Solaris, it sounds far better then Sol, which honestly is quite a bad name.
Wasn't Solaris a really bad movie?

I have always thought of it as Sol 3.

My guess is aliens would refer to it as; 3rd Rock from the Sun

We could call Earth Gaia or Terra or something fancy like that, but in essence, 'Earth' was easier to remember so the name just sort of stuck. That's the impression I get anyway. And it's not like we can change it now...

ok so i take it you have all seen a film where aliens of some sort come to earth and call it earth.

what if earth has another name? what if it was abandoned by other beings and they called it something else?

and who decided it was to be called earth???
We did. We're the rulers of the planet so we decide what's what. You don't see ferrets objecting to our naming patterns.
i do.

...make them stop.

Pshh, it's called 'Holy Terra', not Earth. And we're all ruled by a magnificent god-emperor who fights the forces of chaos and all the filthy aliens out in space.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was to my understanding that our planets international name was "Terra".

To resolve this issue, I propose we rename our world 'Planet Bob'.

That should make everyone happy.

Did you know that you weren't called Josh? I bet you didn't! Because your parents could have called you... Harry! Or Arnold!

See how much sense that arguement makes? That's how much sense your arguement makes.

It's Earth in our language, whatever the species named it before us would just be translated to Earth for us and visa versa for whatever they call it.

Solaris is a movie, but thats not what i was getting at. the name sounds far better then Sol does. Third Rock from the Sun is a TV show, and the name doesnt exactly make sence, seeing as the sun is a title given to the nuclear reactor that we have made a god and named

Eh? It's called earth far the same reason water is called "water"...

How disappointing, I had been hoping for an opportunity to say something about how the Sun's real name is Sol...

Earth? I'm assuming you mean Pangaea+water? If so, the Scientist who discovered that we were on a planet named it.

yes, but from an aliens perspective, Earth is just the 3rd lump of rock orbiting the sun (or whatever their designation for a star is)

Isn't it Pangaea + movement of tectonic plates?
