well, within my expansive megaverse there are hundreds of 'earths'(every new colony ship calls there planet 'earth') and only one homeworld which the more intellegent races refer to as 'terra originis' or 'the first earth', 'earth 001', or even 'the time-looped one'.
What the fuck?

No, really, what the fuck?

You think every single inhabited planet is called Earth?

In our goddamn SOLAR SYSTEM there are planets not named Earth. Sure they aren't inhabited, but you think every planet with life in the never ending Universe is named Earth?

yeah, because chinese people call it "earth" too, right?

This is the most pointless arguing of semantics ever. It's called earth because it's a random sound that was used to give this massive lump of rock a name. Just so we can use it in language.

"A rose by any other name will still fuck you up if you eat it because it has fucking thorns you moron." - Shakespeare

And I personally want to call it "Sol 3" in interstellar terms...

no, but you can't deny that many colonists, after several hundred years travel, would consider their world to be 'a new earth' and eventually forget the 'new' part.
second; i'm only talking about humans. someone else, any of the non-human races of the megaverse, had to make the observation.
and finnaly, it's my own personal roleplay, i'm not imposing my views on you. just expressing my opinions, and thoughts.

ok so i take it you have all seen a film where aliens of some sort come to earth and call it earth.

what if earth has another name? what if it was abandoned by other beings and they called it something else?

and who decided it was to be called earth???
We did. We're the rulers of the planet so we decide what's what. You don't see ferrets objecting to our naming patterns.
But why would aliens bent on taking over earth call it earth instead of by a target name, or by the name they will give it upon take over?

Personally I think aliens would call it "That big blue ball with lots of helpless squishy targets on it"

We should stick with 'Terra' just to confuse aliens intercepting radio and television signals transmitted after 2001.

Terra was the original name, under the Romans. Then that was translated into other languages and eventually became Earth, that's the common name now.

Earth's official scientific designation is Sol 3. Because it's the thrid planet in the Solar system. If any Aliens actually came to Earth, that is what we would have them call it. Alien mouths are not worthy to speak the name of Holy Terra.

You know, I've often wondered that myself. We call this planet Earth, but some extra terrestrial race would probably give it a completely different name that has meaning to them. And if they have the technology to travel around in space, they'd probably consider us far too primitive to even give a shit what we call our planet. And yet we always see everyone calling it Earth for some arbitrary reason. If we were travelling around in space, we'd be giving every planet we came across arbitrary names until we found out what the local inhabitants, if any, called it; so it's reasonable to assume that any other spacefareing race would be doing the same thing, and following that logic they probably gave our planet a completely different name, along our star and star system.

Actually they share the same roots because English is Germanic/French based. It's sort of a culmination of the two languages.

But yes, it's called Earth because we, the inhabitants named it that. If intelligent aliens came here they'd probably call it Earth because we named it that and vice versa. If we travel to an alien planet we'll probably name it whatever the natives do. If not out of ease but because good names are difficult to come by.

Also Earth has a few other names. Gaia, Terra, whatever. The Moon is also referred to as Luna and the Sun as Sol. Hence we live in the Sol System in the Milky Way galaxy. :3

If aliens were to fix their metaphorical eyes on our solar system they would give our planet a name from their tongue. Heck, it would probably be named after the discoverer's Grandmother or something. That's what we do.

Exactly this. If life evolved on Mars and said they called Mars something else then we'd probably have to call it that instead.
Well Ironically there is a theory with decent reason that life came from mars to start with, a meteorite found in Antarctica was a piece of mars with what looks like fossilized single cell organisms like what we "Evolved" from.

Actually it's the English who called it 'earth' or 'the world'

Serbians call it 'zemlja' or 'svet'... etc. All other languages call it different things. If some aliens came and named it something else, we'd assume that they were talking in their own language and would translate it to 'earth'. Nothing more said about it.

For more interesting names go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth and keep clicking the languages (on the left) till you're satisfied.

Good luck. We'd probably go start a war with them trying to spread our ideals and then convince them to call it Mars as well. Not like it hasn't been done in the history of this planet once or twice. Surely you don't need any examples?
Nah, we'd be afraid of their Tripods.

At least, until one of our diplomats accidently gave an alien a cold and it died.

BIOLOGICAL WARFARE, **** YEAH!

that's actually incorrect. Not everyone calls it earth.

China and Japan: 地球
France: La terre
Germany: Erde
Greece: Γη
Italy and Portugal: Terra
Korea: 지구
Russia: Земля
Spain and possibly Mexico: Tierra

EDIT: Netherlands: Aarde

There are alot of people having a /headdesk moment right now aren't there? And everyone does call it Earth. It's spoken in a different language elsewhere, but in the end the meaning is still the same.
