anyone know from various sci-fi how far away earth-like planets were? ie vulcan, reach etc etc it'd be an interesting comparison fiction to science
Reach is 10.5 light years from Earth.

Vulcan, supposedly, about 16 light years

I'll see if I can find other "notable scifi planets"
@Rocket Dog cheers for that info thats awesome thanks

the pope has already said something about being open to the possibility of god's children existing on other worlds. Its been 500 years, you really aren't going to let that Ptolemaic world thing go will you?

How about being excited that a class "m" planet has been found. Think of all the fun new opportunities for human imperialism!

Great this will be one of the first planets to checkout when I discover FTL travel, but I think I've heard of this gliese before so I guess this information isn't really new.
The sad part is that it is impossible to accelerate faster than the speed of light. From my understanding, it would require more energy than there exists in the universe to attain that speed. And twice as much to slow down.

No, we need to find a way to create wormholes or use whatever they did in Outlaw Star to travel through the vacuum of space.

Still, this is cool news, but completely expected. Eventually anyway.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up how equally problematic it is simply accelerating TO the speed of light let alone FASTER than the speed of light.

Wormholes would be great! Or someway to warp reality around a space so as to change the "rules" regarding near, or faster than, light speed within that space.

If we could get to 1/2 of light speed we'd be to the planet in 40 years, lets get crackin!
I was thinking the whole "more energy than exists in the universe" part was a pretty big damper on the whole endeaver. Gotta admit that is a ton of energy.

I read a Cracked article about why space travel would suck a while back. Put a huge damper on the whole concept. There are a lot of interesting theories to get past some of these problems, but they are largely impracticle if not outright impossible.

Need to immediately send a probe with some kind of 2 ways radio there, to make sure we can communicate (and also confirm it's habitable) and then send transport with hundreds of people there ASAP

*rushes to finish degree* I step forwards to claim the heavy burden of being Goldilock's Planetary Ecologist, and spend my life cataloging the strange flora and fauna of this beautiful planet (before we eat/shoot/mine everything).

The pope or someone from the catholic church already said they're looking to convert aliens. I'm more interested with the muslims, or mormons. Oh, and also the evangelicals.

Christian here:
My understanding is that the bible doesn't exclude possible life on other planets. Unfortunately the bible and how it is interpreted by others are almost always different and often wrong (I know I'm not exempt).

OT: I think science is optimistic, not realistic. If ever there were a need to say, colonize another planet, poor folk like myself are fucked. If a planet with advanced civilization ever decides to invade, wealthy and powerful people can afford protection and shelter, and once again poor folk like me are fucked. Feels bad, man....

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have officially found a planet that has the possibilities to support life much like there is here on our own blue rock. This opens a whole new door on humanities view of the universe, and may begin to give us an idea of just how many life supporting planets there may be out there right now. So, in light of this news, what are your reactions? Do you think this planet harbors life? Will we ever make contact with them if it does, or perhaps be able to spread to this new world?
Does it have oil?

So... my first question:

Is it inhabited by xenomorphs or asari?
Just because everyone seems to want colonization, xenomorphs.

It doesn't really matter what lives on that planet though. We couldn't live through the gravity, the temperature would be beyond our limits, and living in constant day or night would cause many health problems alone. Also, if there is life on that planet there is probably disease. Dying from an alien virus would be a *****.

How long until my own America makes it "Their" property?
Oh boy...

From Wiki:
The United Nations 1967 publication "Outer Space Treaty" states space is the "province of all mankind", and is not subject to claims on sovereignty by States.
And for kicks...
From wiki
The topic of real estate on celestial objects has been present since the 1890s. Coming in and out of public focus for several decades, major notability was established for the idea in 1936. A. Dean Lindsay made claims for all extraterrestrial objects on June 15, 1936 and sent a letter to Pittsburgh Notary Public along with a deed and money for establishment of the property. The public sent offers to buy objects from him as well.

Any thing else? Oh yeah

OT: When I first read the article I was reminded of what an NBC reporter said on the radio the moment before Sputnik was heard by millions of Americans.

"Listen now for the sound that forevermore separates the old from the new."

It would be interesting to imagine what would happen if we aimed a telescope powerful enough to get a good view of the surface, and then imagine what would happen if we started seeing things move (or wave back at us).

Jesus, now we have to get there, in which there will be no or may be no petrolum products depending on the stage of life on the planet. It'll be like the 50's!

Did anyone read the article? I skimmed it tbh but all I saw was that the planet was in the right range "goldilocks zone" for life. Its not another earth like planet and these constant posts/articles are getting really old that I don't even click them most of the time anymore.

This planet is like Riddick where when the sun comes up everything burns (but not as severe)and rotates slowly, they don't know if it has water, its 3x the mass of Earth and only slightly larger, aka 3x more gravity! They don't know what atmosphere it has, and it doesn't rotate quickly.

Basically the only thing they found is that it is a planet in the right orbit range, and its mass is probably sufficient for some form of life. Thats it.

"But there are still many unanswered questions about this strange planet. It is about three times the mass of Earth, slightly larger in width and much closer to its star ? 14 million miles away versus 93 million. It's so close to its version of the sun that it orbits every 37 days. And it doesn't rotate much, so one side is almost always bright, the other dark.
Temperatures can be as hot as 160 degrees or as frigid as 25 degrees below zero, but in between ? in the land of constant sunrise ? it would be "shirt-sleeve weather," said co-discoverer Steven Vogt of the University of California at Santa Cruz.
It's unknown whether water actually exists on the planet, and what kind of atmosphere it has. But because conditions are ideal for liquid water, and because there always seems to be life on Earth where there is water, Vogt believes "that chances for life on this planet are 100 percent."But there are still many unanswered questions about this strange planet. Yeah, I heard about this. Pretty great, and it's fun to see a relatively large advancement in our knowledge of the universe as it happens.

Even if there's no life on it, once we have the capability we can travel there and colonize it. SUCCESS

Ok team escapist lock and load. We are going in hot, assume hostile aliens, we have been gaming all our lives for this. Well I doubt this will become an issue in my lifetime but hey we have to keep gaiming for the future!

Cryo sleep would be cool though.

Oh, come on! We haven't even claimed the moon, & we were there 1st.
What do you think the flag is there for?
A giant "fuck you" to the rest of the world?
How about symbolism & pride? If no one can say "look what we accomplished" without you reading it as "fuck you," I'd say you have issues.

BrownGaijin beat me to the punch in explaining members of the UN have a treaty declaring everything in space cannot be claimed by any nation. That includes the US, especially since we're part of the UN & signed the treaty.
