England tied with America (and I didn't know that the Americans knew what proper football was) and Germany beat Australia 4-0. As an Australian, I don't care now that we're out.
Poor misguided soul; America's duty is to be the best at everyting; even Communist Kickball. That's why Ghana's no longer allowed to lose.
The world cup ended yesterday dude.

It could have been worse. They could have been losing 4-2 at half time.

Fair enough I guess I just can't understand the money being thrown around the Premier League, when it just doesn't seem to happen in rugby, cricket, etc, and I can't help but feel it corrupts and it couldn't hurt to allow some young players in who really want it for the reason of playing for their country.
That's simple. The Premier League just brings in probably 10 times more money that any other sport played in England.

Probably, numbers might be high due to hyperbole. But yeah football makes a lot of money.
They are also one of the largest tax contributors in the country! People always forget that 50% of their wages usually go in tax, so they give a huge amount to the government.
True; regardless, I, like SenseOfTumour, can't help but think it 'corrupts' the young players - after all, most if not all of these young players are being offered more money a week than they would, in another profession, earn in a life time (unless they become CEOs or the like). And especially at those young ages, that sort of freedom of money without the restrain and control that experience brings has and frequently does cause problems.

That said, as to why England have faired so poorly these last few decades, I can't help but think the root cause is the English media, particularly the newspapers, who find fault with everyone, everything, and anything, unleashing an unhuman tide of bile upon it. In fact, the more I look at our own more reactionary elements within our society, the more I see the influence of this bile.

Well, that one ball was clearly a goal, so in reality it's 4 to 2 I suppose.
Still, Germany won and would've won even if the goal had counted, and that's what matters. Roight?

Yeah the equal half time score wasn't so bad, a win was within our grasp then. Bah.

Yeah; "I want everything to go back to being boring and mundane; screw the excitement that comes once every 2 years when a major international tournament is played, if I don't like it then nobody can..."

[small][/sarcasm][/small]

That's such a childish viewpoint to take...
Wow, you brushed that one off pretty quickly. It's the idiocy of some fans that annoys me. They chant and chant, making an awful lot of noise (I have extremely sensitive hearing) and say that England can win, then as soon as we lose, slag the team off like there is no tomorrow. The hypocritical facebook rants have started annoying me now too.

I wanted us to lose, because now the idiocy level will go down again, and I won't have to listen to everyone in school complaining about how awful our team are, despite only an hour and a half before the match, they were cheering for England. That isn't support, it's downright stupid. I'm all for the excitement, but I can't be doing with how pathetic some people get. If you're a fan, you don't wail on your team, if you do, you're just an idiot. A fan/supporter should, in my opinion, take the viewpoint that there is always another World Cup for them to try and win.

I don't see it as childish, it's quite selfish of me, I agree, but not childish. I make more sense than any of the people I've spoken to today about football do at any rate...(Excluding you, I'm referring to the people I know)

You can't expect Rooney to carry all the team on his back.

And we need some tech to support the referees; they are the most damaged when there is a bad call. And they will still be needed to make sure the players behave.

That Ozil guy, tremendous player; setting nice goals to be done.

I want Germany to win, 'cos I hate all this talk about the world cup and if England lose (hopefully) there will be less talk of it.

The rest of the time I don't much care for it and I hear very little spoke of it, but when the world cup is on 9 out 10 conversations is about it.

I don't like football 'cos it's full of overpaid, camp actors. If it had manly men in it I wouldn't mind so much, but the diving cheating to get players sent off or free kicks etc.

They all need there wages cut in quarter aswell.

How I wish I could have watched what appears to have been the best game of the tournament so far (didn't see Italy vs Slovakia) as a neutral. Might have actually enjoyed it instead of spending 75 minutes tearing my hair out and 15 minutes on the edge of my seat.

That disallowed goal was no excuse imo. We played after that incident as if we had the confidence of having scored up until the 50th minute to no avail. Germany were uncertain and struggling then, but we couldn't get anything from that period, and then they pulled themselves together and demolished England. They may have been more uncertain at 2-2, but I'm sure they would have pulled themselves together anyway and that incident should not be allowed to distract from the dire performances. That was the case with the opening game against the USA, but while I'm sure Green won't be alone in being abused for international cock-ups, this defeat certainly cannot be pinned down to that one moment.

Barring that 15 minute spell we were atrocious. Same story as last time, gambling on Rooney who doesn't repay the faith in him, and without the effective midfield shielding of Hargreaves. Barry shouldn't be playing at the highest international level imo, may have stood a chance of dominating midfield (which we needed to do) with a combative Hargreaves or Parker in the middle.

Defence, well, needless to say it was appalling. I blame Terry the most though, should have been nearer the ball/Klose for the first and went upfront leaving the defense horrifically exposed for the fourth, although the whole unit was constantly torn apart by the admittedly terrific movement by the Germans. Hansen on the BBC coverage was moaning about how they've never played together, and how being put on the right side of the center may have effected Terry, but that's a bullshit excuse. Terry and Upson have played together several times for England and should have developed some understanding, and it still doesn't explain Terry losing all positional sense for that game.

Did anyone else think that Lampard was pretty good in this game though? Not spectacular, but he wasn't ludicrously incompetent and seemed a constant threat (rather than an ineffectual and mostly rather selfish Gerrard).

Anyway, I'm kinda glad we're moving past the age of this overhyped Golden Generation, I won't miss most of them, but I particularly won't miss the way the same stars are accommodated into the formation at the team's expense. I thought Capello had the balls to drop star names after he ditched Owen, but the persistence of Heskey's inclusion to cater to a useless Rooney, and Gerrard's inclusion on the left (when we would have benefited far more with Jole Cole, Adam Johnson or even Downing playing there imo) suggested he fell to the old trap of being a slave to the stars in the team, despite his authoritative posturing.

Ah well, least I oughta enjoy the Mexico Argentina game (that fixture was terrific in the last WC). Hopefully that'll distract me from worrying about the future England team, for all their faults at international level, I'd rather Gerrard Lampard etc over Huddlestone and O'Hara in center mid.

You should see the idiocy level here in Brazil. People actually stop working to see the damn game and party afterwards. And it is an election year. Brazilian soccer has a sick relationship with its supporters.

When the World Cup goes to Brazil in 4 years the whole country will stop for a month. Two if Brazil wins.

At the end of the day, England have not put in a single decent performance over the entire world cup.

We frankly didn't deserve to get through the group stage, let alone past Germany.

I'd like to post a German propaganda song from WWI that I am quite fond of, which I think fits the occasion rather well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faEFH5N8XUY&feature=related

Lyrics to "Das Engellandlied"

Auf Deutsch:

Heute wollen wir ein Liedlein singen,
trinken wollen wir den kuehlen Wein
und die Glaeser sollen dazu klingen,
denn es muss, es muss geschieden sein.

Gib mir deine Hand, deine weisse Hand,
leb wohl, mein Schatz, lebe wohl, mein Schatz, leb wohl.
Lebe wohl, denn wir fahren, denn wir fahren,
denn wir fahren gegen Engeland, Engeland!

In English:

Today we want to sing a song,
we will drink cooled wine
and we clink the glasses to that,
for it must, it must be done.

Give me your hand, your white hand,
On your health, my love, on your health, my love, on your health.
On your health, for we go, for we go,
for we go to England, England!
