Good Punk is DEAD. But since thread is discussing it i'll only say Green Day before American Idiot and Offspring.

You know what? Forget about the old school stuff. I love Dead Kennedys and Black Flag but those bands formed 30 years ago. When I was in high school we had a word for songs and bands that were 30 years old. We called them 'Oldies.'

Let's talk about cool new punk bands that have built on the principals of punk but are doing more than rehashing oldies? Gogol Bordello might be a good example. There are more out there. I know they are, but (like most old punk bands from back in The Day) most people haven't heard of them. Who can tell me about any new punk bands that I should be checking out?

i like what my friends told me is "HAPPY PUNK" (never really got the "genres among genres" thing)

Tsunami Bomb
The Ataris
The Strokes
The Ramones
MXPX

such bands, almost all of them are from "Kung Fu Records" i first heard of them after buying a sample disc "Punk Rock Is Your Friend: Hardcore Is Your Friend TOO" and "The Gone With The Wind (something something)

i have always considered my self a "punk" guy, but i don´t really care about labels, i just generally prefer that kind of music

Well considering I only know of like 2 punk bands I get the feeling this thread won't go far...
There's a reason there's only 2 punk bands you know of...

I'll admit to some love for good punk (Though I'm a little hazy on what makes a song "punk." Hell, I'm hazy on what any genre is defined as. I just listen to what I like and don't worry about it.). I just prefer They Might Be Giants and their like (REM, Jonathon Coulton, Bare-Naked Ladies, Moxy Fruvous (There's supposed to be an umlaut over the u). Canada is awesome. XD).

Real punk is incredible. Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance are shit but they're NOT punk. Anti-Flag, NoFX- these are punk
Yeah I saw them live at the big day out in New Zealand (Anti Flag), they were spewing all this propoganda (again in New Zealand), people were just like ummm? Hahaha, na I take back my first statement, it's close minded to say punk is lame, but sometimes it's a bit of a laugh when we are all New Zealanders with such MASSIVE political problems ;)

I hate music discussions on this site, because it eventually evolves into a big Death Metal/Hardcore shit-fest. Thankfully this thread started out as it.

You're sick of metal...so you make a punk thread? Damn, I was coming in hoping for, I dunno...J-pop or Ska or Symphonic music.

That would have been awesome. "Screw Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth. Let's talk about Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky!" I'd easily rate The Sacrilegious Scorn behind, say, Night on Bald Mountain.

I've noticed that, sadly, despite my efforts to turn the discussions towards power and symphonic metal.

Alright I could use one word or a paragraph or two. First my one word. No. And here's two words: get out. And now heres some more:

What the hell is this thread supposed to do? It will only make people(namely me) angry. There's nothing wrong with metal, or any other genre of music. I don't like many genres but that's an opinion. So really what I'm saying is..what the fuck if the purpose of this thread? Are you telling us you don't like metal? Are you saying punk is better than Metal? Either way, useless. the only discussion that will arise from that is angry flaming.

Right. Also for the record I'm a metalhead. Not so musch of a suprise eh? Well anyway when I say metalhead I mean the kind who realizes that metal was started in the late 70's and was the best in the 80's. The kind who think genres like deathcore and grindcore and nu-metal are a disgrace to the name of Metal as a genre. Metal isn't just about being fast, intense music. It's about musical talent, proper song composition, and lyrical meaning beyond that of most genres. So next time think before you post this crap.

You shouldn't try to restrict yourself. There are a shitload of sub genres for a reason.

Where's all the love for post-rock, shoegaze, and electronica?
Friend.

Real punk died a long time ago.
I disagree with your argument, and present Exhibit A, NoFX. [http://objection.mrdictionary.net/go.php?n=3184100]

I love a bit of punk. Of all kinds. I even think some of the newer style stuff isn't half bad, but I do love the elitism within punk itself.
