The action and destruction shots were quite amazing in the movie. The plot and relationship development however were beyond cliche.
I was also amused at the fact that the Russian fella Sasha is actually an Estonian.

Good call on the first bit :D

Anyway, good review I guess and I loved the analysis of the shot
I agree, the analysis was spot-on.

And I really wanted to know if this film offered a great roller-coaster ride of grand-scale destruction with as little plot as necessary in order to get it going and wrap it up. I believe I will be very happy with this little popcorn-fest!

Thank you Movie Bob for another great review!

Oh, and I believe the Mayan Codex *did* have something to say about 2012. I think it translates to roughly "If you are able to read this it is time to carve a new calendar." :D

Very funny intro. Loved it when you broke it down with shot composition. Great video and I hope you get uncensored.

Yes, well I think it's a bad sign that The Escapist is not cooperating with censors. I would have hoped my rants would have had an effect at least here .

As far as 2012 goes, I'm not a big disaster movie fan but maybe I'll check it out if I get bored.

When it comes to the "Doom Date" truthfully I sort of hope it happens but merely brings about near extinction (sort of like where the movie is going apparently) rather than a genuine end to humanity. Something like that to reduce the population (sadly including me as part of the cull no doubt) and bring the fragments of humanity together as a unity would be a godsend to be honest. At least when you think in the extreme long term.

That said, just like every other prophecy of doom, I think it's generally BS much like MovieBob.

However, if you want to do a credible job of "knocking" the belief you need to actually give it credit where credit is due. There is an "other" side to the story, and one of the things that gives it more credibility than most "doomsday theories" is that it has a number of experts who can give the debunkers a run for their money.

Not saying I agree with it, but one apparently valid point borught up in respose to the whole "it was just the end of the calander" thing is that the Mayans would have continued the project endlessly just for something to do. I mean the whole endeavor employing the guys with the chisels and whatever scratching it down among other things. Plus 2012 is an odd place to stop, especially given the point someone already made about their "rounded" numbers. Stopping at say 2020 or 2200 would have made more sense if they were going to end the project. The fact that it's a bit odd is part of the entire point, and no matter what arguements are made it *IS* an oddity. Though an oddity does not nessicarly mean it's anything special.

Also for all arguements to the contrary there are also intepetations of Mayan myths and such that reinforce the entire idea (along with those that debunk it), not to mention support from various numerlogical theories. Also I think there might have been some reinforcement from both Kabbala (debated) and the "hidden bible codes". :p

I don't believe it really, and am hardly stocking a shelter, but truthfully it's kind of interesting to read about from the other perspective. I'm not ready to say anyone who thinks this should jump into traffic or anything, but I do hope that if/when they prove to be wrong they are willing to move on the way most Y2k fanatics were.

Oh and IF supernatural doom is about to descend, hopefully the powers that are in charge will do so with a zombie invasion, and be nice enough simultaneously bless me with living out my final days as an awesome zombie stomper, who gets to have great sex with the incredible babes I rescue. I mean I'd need a supernatural blessing to get that lucky, and it might even be worth the end of the world. :p

I also thought that this was going to be a bad movie, where the goal were to destroy as many things in 158 min as they could. But i guess i was wrong, after all it's Bob who is the pro here.

(also my B-day is on December 21 kind of creepy :S)

so is this a good film to watch for entertainment purposes only? or will it be better on blu-ray? ( i hope so because it looks like it has been well directed)

Damn, now I'm eating the words I told my friends last night at the movie theater not to watch this stupid movie.. Well it sold out when we got there anyway so not too bad on my part.

And the world will end on 2012 if I have anything to say about it!

Okay, okay, if you haven't read up on the 2012 stuff, here's a nice Wikipedia page on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_doomsday_prediction

But really, as it points out: "Mayan elder Apolinario Chile Pixtun and Mexican archaeologist Guillermo Bernal both note that "apocalypse" is a Western concept that has little or nothing to do with Mayan beliefs. Bernal believes that such ideas have been foisted on the Maya by Westerners because their own myths are "exhausted". Mayan archaeologist Jose Huchm complains that "If I went to some Mayan-speaking communities and asked people what is going to happen in 2012, they wouldn't have any idea. That the world is going to end? They wouldn't believe you. We have real concerns these days, like rain."

So don't fret it too much. ;) Enjoy the great review by Movie Bob, have a good time at the show and let's look forward to what Bob brings out for review next week! :D

I am fixated on 2012 because it is the beginning of the 8th generation of video game consoles, and thus also the beginning of a new era in gaming as a whole.

oh and, i dont really believe the world will end on Dec 21st, 2012, i just think that something bad might happen... most likely not something of apocalyptic proportions, but just something bad...
