Yes, well I think it's a bad sign that The Escapist is not cooperating with censors. I would have hoped my rants would have had an effect at least here .
As far as 2012 goes, I'm not a big disaster movie fan but maybe I'll check it out if I get bored.
When it comes to the "Doom Date" truthfully I sort of hope it happens but merely brings about near extinction (sort of like where the movie is going apparently) rather than a genuine end to humanity. Something like that to reduce the population (sadly including me as part of the cull no doubt) and bring the fragments of humanity together as a unity would be a godsend to be honest. At least when you think in the extreme long term.
That said, just like every other prophecy of doom, I think it's generally BS much like MovieBob.
However, if you want to do a credible job of "knocking" the belief you need to actually give it credit where credit is due. There is an "other" side to the story, and one of the things that gives it more credibility than most "doomsday theories" is that it has a number of experts who can give the debunkers a run for their money.
Not saying I agree with it, but one apparently valid point borught up in respose to the whole "it was just the end of the calander" thing is that the Mayans would have continued the project endlessly just for something to do. I mean the whole endeavor employing the guys with the chisels and whatever scratching it down among other things. Plus 2012 is an odd place to stop, especially given the point someone already made about their "rounded" numbers. Stopping at say 2020 or 2200 would have made more sense if they were going to end the project. The fact that it's a bit odd is part of the entire point, and no matter what arguements are made it *IS* an oddity. Though an oddity does not nessicarly mean it's anything special.
Also for all arguements to the contrary there are also intepetations of Mayan myths and such that reinforce the entire idea (along with those that debunk it), not to mention support from various numerlogical theories. Also I think there might have been some reinforcement from both Kabbala (debated) and the "hidden bible codes".
I don't believe it really, and am hardly stocking a shelter, but truthfully it's kind of interesting to read about from the other perspective. I'm not ready to say anyone who thinks this should jump into traffic or anything, but I do hope that if/when they prove to be wrong they are willing to move on the way most Y2k fanatics were.
Oh and IF supernatural doom is about to descend, hopefully the powers that are in charge will do so with a zombie invasion, and be nice enough simultaneously bless me with living out my final days as an awesome zombie stomper, who gets to have great sex with the incredible babes I rescue. I mean I'd need a supernatural blessing to get that lucky, and it might even be worth the end of the world.
