Hmm, while I'm not inclined to believe a word that any Goonswarm says (And that's the way they like it), I do think that the mere fact that one was written, whether it's sincere or not, is an unprecedented step for that group, honestly if I were that Miner, I'd frame that. Because Goonswarm never shows remorse for their actions, so the fact that one of their leaders has come out with any kind of apology is still a pretty big deal, regardless of whether it's entirely sincere or not.

You dont play a game and suddenly become a different person, I have some roleplay characters in some RPGs but its just variations of my actual personality. I dont do things that I wouldnt do, surely thats obvious to everyone? This guy is lying, you dont be a dick for the character if being that way makes you feel (surprisingly) like a dick.

Playing a game isnt an act, its a game... its something you play for fun. If being a dick is something you find fun then yes, you are a dick. Again, this guy is a lying liar who lies.
I would beg to differ on this, The nature of Eve supports a certain type of playstyle and personality, and I myself, who prides himself on being a "Care-Bear" even found that, in order to succeed at this game, I often had to do things and act in ways that, in other games, would have repulsed me. BUt the pressure from those I flew with, coupled with the systems and rewards in place, actually made me start to enjoy these actions.

In real life, I would never attack someone without provocation, and yet in Eve I went out of my way to find people to gun down. I would never try and provoke people on the street into fighting me, however in Eve it was a favoured pastime.

As he said, his "act" gives himself and his alliance an advantage, and I can completely agree with that, The Goonswarm is one of the most infamous and powerful alliances in the game, and they maintain that power through their cold-blooded, ruthless tactics. I may not like them, but I can respect them, and I don't find it too far-fetched to believe that their leaders are not these unrepentant super-villains in real life, because real life doesn't reward that kind of behaviour.

His actions at the panel didn't completely prove that he's a sociopath. How frighteningly close to sincere his completely insincere apology looks does.

Being able to fake empathy and compassion while stroking your own ego and insulting the person you are apologizing to, now that's fucked up.

The Mittani, master of lies and deceit, head of the biggest group of space faring dicks you're ever likely to meet (and who I would shoot on sight in game). Yet I believe him here.

I actually think he is sorry. You've got to remember that he isn't playing EVE, he's playing this entire metagame he built around it. In a lot of ways it's a much better game, but it requires this Mittani personality. But I think he got drunk amongst companions and said something he now deeply regrets in that personality. Having read his tweets I think his "consideration" of resignation hinges on him being able to get out of the position without leaving the CSM and CCP in a bind.

He made a mistake, and now he's trying to be contrite. I can't help but give him respect for that.

EVE is a game about groups of bastards competing to be the biggest bastard in a battle for money and power At least I can see how he got EVE confused with real life then.

Excuses invalidate apologies, unfortunately. The only true apology is an unconditional (or unqualified) one.
He's not saying he made the comment because he was drunk, he's saying he didn't remember what he said until he saw the quote.
It's a soft excuse. He's perhaps not directly making the excuse himself, but he's inviting others to connect the dots for him. Otherwise, why bring it up at all, if your purpose is to apologize for what you've done?

(Answer: The idea is to create some distance between his choice and his action, creating at least the vague impression that it's not entirely his fault.)

Hey, I understand it. When I've done dumbass things in my life, I want to be sure that people know, "Look, I'm not the kind of person that normally does stuff like that," and that I'm personally disgusted with myself. But if that's what you want to convey, say that.
But he did later go out of his way to say "I'm not using the alcohol as an excuse, I realize that I made the choice to be inebriated" which gives him some credibility in my eyes. Maybe I'm too trusting of people in general.

I was all set to be snarky about "announced his intentions to consider resignation" (what?), but that is honestly one of the best public apologies I've ever read.
Seconded.

Oh so the Goons aren't assholes, they just RP as them?

BS. I am in Gents and blue to Goons, and in the recruitment process THEY come to YOU. They specifically look for a certain kind of person, ie sociopath loners who would likely have long since been institutionalized if they did not have EVE to vent their antisocial impulses into.

The Eve-O thread of his apology has already reached 138 (as of writing this post). The amount of shit that's piling up over there is growing so fast you need wings to stay above it.

Found this randomly while looking stuff up, might be interesting to look at seeing as it's an article where The Mittani addresses an actual suicide at the start.

thats like saying anyone who went full renegade in mass effect or even swtor is a cold heartless ass who only thinks about getting the job done. when infact they could be playing renegade for the fact that they want to be someone they are not. hense the 'ROLE PLAYING" bit. Its a game. people can be whoever they want to be. Not everyone is a heartless bastard in EVE. one of my corpmates i met on there has become a great friend and we play other games as well. Yes eve is harsh. so what. Thats life. all of you who say that if you were there you would have stormed the stage and slugged him are full of it. you would have been sitting in the croud with the rest of them. laughing along with everyone else. and if you actually did feel that it was wrong you still wouldnt have done anything cuz that is just how society is. everyone takes the high road after the fact so that they feel like they're better than everyone else.

face facts. you arnt. nobody is a saint. at most you would do is probbaly what the one who started this whole blown up thing did. tell people. yeah. after its all over and it sinks in then you feel that it was horrible. but in that place. at that time. feeding off the engery. it was just another eve joke. a horrible one. but still. things like that arnt limited to only eve players. things like that happen all the time. everywhere. i dont see people raging over every threat, every harassment. Yet give it a public setting and it would blow out of proportion. i bet many of you people would say the exact same thing if it was WoW or LoL community that did it.

Real life isnt all sunshine and bronies. It is harsh. It is twisted. But it is still life. there is always good in it. Now maybe if people started acting on it instead of just stating things after the fact we might have a chance. but as it stands. those who dont act on it are just as bad as the ones who did the actions. Inaction is a choice as well. so all you good people start acting on your beliefs!

I for one. if i was there and drunk.. which sadly i couldnt attend and i dont drink. (blasphemous i know. eve = beer)... i probably would have enjoyed the entire pannel.. then i would have felt that that last joke was kinda wrong but then i would have gotten over it and been joygasming to the next eve trailer/dev pannel/ etc.

as the Great God Moder of the universe once said. "those without sin cast the first stone"

so.. whos going to be first?

but Serously people. its done. its over. he appologized, gave him compensation, and is considering resigning. probably "considering" because eve is torn right now. many people want him to stay and many want him to step down. and seeingas the elections barely finished its going to be complicated for a while.

Interesting page I found that contained the reaction from the Mackinaw guy himself to this whole business (In-game conversation, not very detailed, but it's something): http://liangnuren.wordpress.com/2012/03/26/the-mittani-hero/
That's pretty useful. Gives more detail for about what happened. If it's true of course. It's at least more than I've seen floating around the internet.

Had I have gotten that apology myself, I would have accepted it. It's about as much as I can expect from this situation.

The people they WANT to be, couldnt have said it better myself. I used to be able to make the "dick" decisions without a second thought... back when I was emotionaly stunted. Now I cant do that without feeling awful, and people generally try to avoid doing things that make them feel bad or have we finally found that unique snowflake in me? I doubt it.

If his actions (and they are his actions) in the game were those of a dick... then he is a dick. Simple as that, sure he may have rationalized it as being a character and blah, blah, blah... but ultimately he is responsible.

Because it is ever so easy to judge someone based on one action and never meeting the person!

I would post a few things judging people on single posts as well here on the escapist...but I would likely get banned!
That's the single greatest proof of my point. Here you take a moral high ground by saying that we shouldn't judge people blah blah blah, then you backhand me by saying that if you judged me I would be a ****. The fact is that it undermines your stance when you use it to make a cheap shot at someone's character. Saying that you won't say what you want to say is no better than actually saying it. It's just better for keeping you out of trouble.

I really think this guy is a horrible person, but I'm not going to hide behind being holier-than-thou. He's a sociopath, he's lying, and there are plenty of actions to base that off of.
