You guys do realize that the states with nukes are not going to be able to launch them right? They still need the authorization codes I thought. And even then, that won't prevent them from restraining themselves from doing something stupid like country wide domination.
Most likely, you would see regional zones of influence. California and Hawaii would rule the West Coast. Alaska would probably be invaded by Russia and make a killing selling oil to the US. Virginia and Texas would divide the Southeast and Chesapeake Bay area. New York would probably diplomacy their way into leading a New England zone, most likely also containing Pennsylvania and Jersey. I cannot really say what would happen to the mid-West.
All that being said, my only consolation is that my state (Georgia) might be fought over by Virginia and Texas because of our military basses. Oh, and I love the idea of Virginia seizing the other half of Washington.

Well China could sell the US states weapons and supplies at very competitive rates, further tipping the economy in its favour. Then intervene to make sure that every state which purchased from it doesn't go bankrupt so they can pay back their loans. Texas. We can legally secede from the Union unlike everybody else so that gives us a head start. Then there's the fact that we have oil, farmland, and livestock, so we won't be without resources. Also, we have NASA. And of course everyone else has already commented on how everyone in Texas owns a gun. Yes this is a slight exaggeration, but you know what? Find me another place where someone can pull out a hunting knife in the middle of Walmart and not cause a panic (he was opening something he just bought). The reason why there wasn't a panic is because if he did anything there would be ten people standing by with weapons who could then put him down.

California, Best economy if it were to become it's own nation. And the population is massive, not to mention that it's only bordered on the east and north. (By states at least.)
As much as I hate the American South (being from the northern US), I would have to say that Texas would inevitably win a mass civil war between each and every state in the US. They have huge military, industrial, demographic, and economic resources, no other state except California could compete.

Ohio! It's teeming with people pissed off that they live in Ohio! And, like 1 out of 4 people you know were born in Ohio(!) and will eventually, inexplicably, feel the need to return there. Ohio(!) would rob the other states of their populations when the war began.
