Of all time?

Steiner, wait, Vicent, wait, Yuffie, wait

Alright, just about everyone. Would be faster to say who I don't find my favourite.
Well..............................?
Go on then ;-)
I didn't like anyone from X, but I didn't play it.
Aeris, Cait Sith
Sort of Eiko and Freya, but I think they're pretty well characterised and fit in nicely in the group mechanic.
Haven't played anything after IX or before VI
There, that wasn't so hard was it, lol! :)

Ramza Beoulve. Of all the characters in the franchise, he's the only one who really gives off the impression of being truly selfless.

Itemizing the various games sounds fun, so here I go:

1: Matoya, I guess? I liked the music in her cave, and the brooms. Not much character development in the first one, so that's all I got.

2 & 3: I didn't play them much, so I have no idea. Again, didn't seem like there was much development.

4: Rubicant. He was classy and honorable. Stupid Edge and his stupid "powers of rage" or whatever..

5: Galuf. Cool name, and he kicks ass for an old guy. He sneaks around Exdeath's palace and saves everyone else in his own little solo section.

6: Setzer. Not entirely sure why. I guess I like his aesthetic, and that he seems to respect the party for playing him. His backstory is decent.

7: I guess I'll have to go with Tifa? I didn't like ff7 much, but if I remember correctly, Tifa hangs around and gets the job done and does her thing in the background, and eventually gets her guy, without any kinda magical flower-girl lifestream crap. She's a trooper.

Tactics: Delita, Zalbag, Dycedarg, MC, Ovelia, Wiegraf, Algus.. Tactics has such better characters than the main franchise.. but overall Delita. He's so damn sympathetic and such a freakin' asshole at the same time. Powerhouse of a character. I don't want to spoil anything.

8: hated this one.. uh.. I guess the guy who turned out to be the MC's dad was kinda OK.

9: didn't play it. So, uh.. not the one with the tail.

10 / X: all the characters in this one pissed me off except Auron and Kimhari, so uh.. Auron.

X-2: No.

11: never played it.

12: I forget his name, but.. the big bad guy's younger brother. He was hella savvy for a kid. I never beat FF12 (and I skipped a lot of the later cutscenes, so I dunno..), but I was rooting for him to someday take over the empire. Balthier was pretty good, too, and Basch and Ashe were decent. Vaan/Penelo/Fran sucked ass by comparison, and never made it into my active party once I got the full coterie.

So, overall, Delita by a landslide.

Let me think...
Well, considering i've only really played 8-10, and i've only finished 8, i'd have to pick Squall as my personal favorite character, of the FF games i've played. The characters from FF9 were interesting and all, but they sing for me the way the characters in FF8 did, and after playing FFX for maybe a half hour, i considered the game and everything in it a complete and total waste of my time.

Magic Johnson Barrett. He's the first video game stereotype of a black guy, I have to admire that.

(I named my Barrett "Magic J.")

Zidane. FINALLY, after two godawful games starring whiney emo kids and a blah-tastic cast of sycophantic supporting characters (some of which get their own crappy spinoff title) we get a fun-loving main character and a varied cast of people with real personalities. One of them,
Vivi, isn't even real!
and has a better-developed personality than anyone in 7 or 8.

There's a few "Wait, what? Why?" moments about Zidane, yeah, but at the end of the day, dagger-happy Zidane stands proudly among my other two favorites: Edgar from 6 and Tellah from 4.

Edgar, from Final Fantasy 6, was the guy who sat there and swore up and down he and the Empire were buddies while funding a rebel group. Not only that, but I respect a man who can kill a dragon with a chainsaw.

Tellah, from 4, is the sort of guy who will punch you in the face, call you an idiot, and tell you to pick your sorry ass up and get over yourself. And he'd be in the right of it on all counts. The only time he suffered a forced break in character was when, after championing reason and logic the entire game up to that point,
Tellah kills himself just to wound Golbez by casting a spell his body can't handle anymore.

I actually find a lot of the minor, or even villain characters more interesting than the playable ones. The Turks from FFVII. Seifer, Rajin and Fujin from FFVIII. They make me laugh and they break up the angst of the protagonists by just being generally awesome. I liked so many characters in FFIX...Beatrix comes to mind. I liked the Crusaders/Chocobo Knights in FFX - I wish there had been more of them, and Seymour was just so creepy, even if he wouldn't bloody die.

As far as playable characters, I always liked Red XIII/Nanaki, maybe just because I like animals. And, after playing through with her from the first continent, I grew to really like Yuffie, just because she's unrelentingly insensitive and it cracks me up. Quistis from FFVIII takes the cake for me, not only because she's hawt and has her own fanclub, but because she was relatably human. Freya from FFIX because the dancing made me laugh my ass off the first time I saw it, with Amarant coming in a close second. In FFX, Kimahri wins for being able to hold my interest as a character without saying a word for half the game.

Hmm...Squall would be my choice, despite only encountering him in Kingdom Hearts. Other than that Cecil, Kain, and Yang from FF4.

Auron wins by far simply because of two things.

1) He fights one-handed and still manages to be one of the stronger characters.

2) He carries his liquor with him everywhere.

Those alone make him the greatest. I don't even need to get into his story.
