IX, then IV, then X, then VII, then Crisis Core.
I haven't been able to play FFXIII much yet due to coursework but I love it a lot too :D

IX has always been my favourite. It was the first one I played and I think the reason I like it is the fantastic and interesting world; I love the airships, the look of the world map, the city architecture and the brilliant musical score that goes along with it. It's just a fun game world to be in

FFIV, VI and VII are my favorites, in no particular order. I recently started playing FF VIII again, then will move on to IX, and then X (which I haven't played yet), then XII and ultimately XIII.

And if I keep on reading and thinking about FF IV and VI, I'll play them again too.

Where has my life gone, doctor?

I like most FF games but for me the best is FF8 closely followed by FF9 and FF6 the rest in my opinion are way behind.

realisedbeating 0:00:00 in a chocobo race ... with atrocious controls, the other is dodging 200 lightening strikes.
The first is surprisingly easy, but second haunts my dreams.

OT: 9, followed by 10 and 12. 10 had better characters and setting, but FF12 was something new and I enjoyed the plot.

They also have awesome side characters in Auron and Basch.

I have played 8 and 7 as well, but I never could like 8, and 7...well, maybe I shouldn't go deeply into that, as it triggers my rants.
I surprisingly did the chocobo one first time, although I didn't do something so I thought I had to do it again and it took me 30 mins of trying before I reliesd I didn't have to do it again.

That annoyed me no end.

Copy pasted from an older post to save time. (haven't played 12 or 13 yet, so my judgment for them is reserved)

-FF6 is a prime example of what every Final Fantasy should strive to be. It was a brilliant, timeless, and well put together game with some of the best characters and one of the best stories ever. Kefka was the first video game villain to truly spark emotions of fear, and legitimate hate, you wanted to kill that fucker after the some of the shit he pulled. Terra is also one of my all time favorite female characters and the relationship between Locke and Celes is one of the few game romances that wasn't ham fisted or just plain stupid. Everything about this game is amazing and it's a true example of Final Fantasy at it's best.

-FF Tactics (original) was another brilliant game with a very down to earth feel to it with what are seemingly the most normal characters in any FF game I've played. It's major departure from the standard FF gameplay turned out to be great and i love strategy games, and this one had shit tons of depth. A well told story with good characters and I loved the first 2 chapters and their analysis of classist society, government, and just the whole politics of it all.

-FF7 is the last of the top 3 FF games that I love. 7 had a great story, and the main hero and antagonist where some of the deepest and interesting characters in the series....it's a shame they have been so misconstrued over the years to terrible and petty generalizations and what not. Sephiroth and Cloud where very interesting characters when you actually delve into their psyche and examine their character for more than just face value.

-Speaking of FF7, Crisis Core was something GOOD that came of that compilation..and boy is it a heavy hitter. It's by far the most personal final fantasy I have ever played, seeing as you played as only Zack it made you form an even deeper connection to the character than any other FF. Zack was and will always be one of the most likable and realistic FF characters to me. He had real feelings and acted accordingly to most situations, although sometimes masking his true emotions behind his up beat attitude. The connection you form with him over the game, and seeing this true enigmatic hero of FF7 be given a fleshed out personality was an amazing emotional adventure. The ending is just plain heart-wrenching and brilliant, and it's definitely one of the most powerful and emotional deaths of any FF game.

-FF4 was another game with a great cast and one of my favorite villains as well. It was the first true epic FF in my eyes and also the definition of a classic FF. It was like an old childhood fairy tale that will live on in my memories forever and was an enjoyable ride.

-And then there is Dissidia, completely different type of game but still awesome. I could write a whole review on why this game is awesome (I would have if it weren't for low motivation, addiction to the game, and school). Just play it, that's all that needs to be said unless you require furthur justification from me, be off of work soon too.

EDIT: I have enjoyed pretty much every FF game I have ever played except with the notable exception of 8, Tactics advance series, and mystic quest. The other games are great, but do not rank as highly as these listed.
Yeah... pretty much what he said. But I haven't played Crisis Core, so I'm swapping it out for V. I loved the job system of V, it added a lot of variety to the gameplay without messing around with character swapping. And I have to admit, even though I played VII first, the big twist in V hit me harder, because you spend so much time in the game and when that happens you get one of those video game "Oh SH*T!" moments. (you know what I'm talking about). Neither of those big plot points measure up to VI's various asides, but they're close.

Also I haven't played Dissidia, but I like the premise and it looks good. So... pop in Tactics Advance 1 & 2. I know a lot of people don't like that series. Honestly, I dont care. I loved the original Tactics, and I had fun playing Tactics Advance. The racial job system added a little extra individuality to the characters, and reason to collect more than just 4 generics and a clan full of uniques. Besides, the Assassin's Oblivion has to be one of the most satisfying abilities in Final Fantasy. The addition of the Gria and Seeq (especially Seeq Hunters) in FFTA2 threw in that little extra variety in gameplay. Say what you want about the story (or lack thereof), Tactics Advance was exactly what it claimed to be: Final Fantasy and tactics. And I thought they were fun.

(Flame shields up) Let me just say something about Final Fantasy VIII... Yes, the story was essentially a romance novel with a bizarre time-travel element based around what is essentially High School students. But compare it carefully to Final Fantasy IV. Romance story? Check. Time travel? not exactly, but yeah. Annoying characters? Palom, Edward, and Tellah (sometimes) easily measure up against Selphie, Squall, Irvine ...ok so I don't remember the entire cast of VIII anymore because it hasn't been remade again yet. The point is they're similar. VIII combines most of the gameplay elements from VI and most of the story elements from IV with the character customization from VII. (Not to mention the old-fashioned Final Boss Switch trick from 1, II, IV, and VI to a degree.) I'd say VIII ranks on par with IV and VII... Ok, maybe not, but easily level with IX, X, and V in terms of "awesome", if you get it.

The only Final Fantasy's I played that I didn't like were II and III. And only because I just couldn't get a feel for II, and the 3D effect gimmicks on III (DS) kept pulling me out of suspension of disbelief (and it was the first time I ever really hated Bahamut).

I love FFVII, I though the music was brilliant, I loved the materia system and I love the gritty atmosphere of the game. I also liked the characters, they at first seem like stereotypical stock characters but if you give them time they grow on you and you'll find that their deeper then you think. I loved FF9 too, I liked FF8's story and characters but I hated it for it's levelling up. See the monsters progress with you which sort of kills the whole point of levelling, the game often feels like it's discouraging levelling because the game gets harder the more you do it... I do like the idea that they tried to do some thing different with the levelling but it fell on it's face for me. FFT and TA are also brilliant games... I liked CC but the game started to get a little repetitive.

Probably 7,8 or 9. When FF made the leap to 3D I was amazed by the graphics and sound. I think my over all favourite would be 7 or 8 because I love the characters and stories in both

So far, out of all the FF games I have played, FF6 is still my favorite. An excellent cast of characters, an interesting story line, nice gameplay, hilarious localization and just an all around good game.

I also like FF2, and I seem to be alone on that. However, I still have yet to play 3,5,8,9,10,12 and 13, so who knows, my opinion could change after I play some of the others.
Your not alone, I loved FF II, especially the leveling up system, or lack there of.

But on topic: Final Fantasy IV and IX are my favourites, just for sheer ammount of depth, fun and story.

Even though it seems like everyone hated it, I really liked Final Fantasy XII too. If you toss aside my immense hatred for the prepubescent twins, I pretty much loved every other party member and while the story was the same FF shit as ever, it is still the only game of the franchise where I willingly watched every cutscene. The battle system was a lot more interesting and I loved the the fact that you could equip any character with any weapon.

Also, Balthier.
