FFVIII - for some reason, the Junction system really appealed to me, and I liked the story, particularly the time travel elements. I also like the turn towards more realistic characters.

After that, I like XII, X, and FF7 the best.

Let's be honest though: I have all the SNES/NES/PSX ones on my PSP, thoguh, ready to play, and keep my PS2 hooked up next to my PS3slim just in case I want to crank out an FF game.

First VIII, then Tactics, then Crisis Core.

However, this may change depending on whether or not I like XIII when I buy it on the first, although I've only heard good things about it.

I liked all of them but 6 7 9 10 and 12 were my favs. 2 and 8 were my least favorites. I have yet to play 13 and I don't think I will anytime soon thanks to graduate school eating up all of my time.

XI. I can't say why. It probably has a lot to do with the ability and equipment systems.
But yeah, I love it. It's the only one in the main series that I've actually finished

I liked 9 and 12 best so far. Mainly for the story progression and characters.
I agree. I liked how quirky 9's characters were, and how the "I don't know what this thing's goddamn gender is" (Quina) seemed to parody the androgynous characters found in JRPGs. (then again, maybe I am giving them too much credit.)
12 was great because of the battle system, because of how much stuff there was to do, and there was no shitty romance (there's Ashe and Lord Rasler, but that's kind of different.) Balthier is kind of awesome too.

Six (called three on SNES) was may favorite until I played five on PS1 Anthology and now it is toss up between those two. I'd love PS3 remake of either of those.

To rank them, it would probably be: IX, VI, XIII, X, II, VII (the story gets progressively worse in proportion to your distance from Midgar), I, V, and a tie between XII and VIII (I never played III or IV)

VI wins by a long margin for me. After that as Enigmers said above me I have to give it to IX and XII for bringing back some of the elements of fun and whimsy into the story. Look, I appreciate what VII did at the time by killing off a playable character, it was a groundbreaking moment and Sephiroth is a great villain, but the world doesn't hold up to the standards those set, it's not a complete game.

I also haven't seen anyone mention my least favourite FF which has to go to XI. I wanted to like the game, the world is well detailed, the NPC characters are interesting, the potential for exploration is huge, but it's all totally wrong. There's no signposting, I had to check an FAQ just to find out where to get started and while MMOs are meant to be overcomplicated, XI does so on a meaningless level. A good map system and the ability to track Questgivers would go a long way to redeeming it and a good travel system to negate the vast expanse of open space you have to trudge through doing nothing to get to the next region would be nice, too. It was a good idea with horrible execution Blizzard clearly learned from.

I'm not flame-baiting, but 8.

I adored the junction system, enemy scaling, card game, music and, well, everything but the meh story.

I suspect I'm gonna get flamed, but, X. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
I'm pretty sure you'd only get shit if you said, "X-2"

Well, I'm going to have to say FF2 will always have a place in my heart. It's the first final fantasy I got into. Really pushed me into the genre where Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy failed. I was far too young for the enjoyment of all the reading and level grinding of those two. Final fantasy 3 was pretty good, but Chrono Trigger overshadowed it. And Final Fantasy 7 is a classic.

The rest of the series...I can leave actually. Ten was fun enough to beat, and I actually enjoyed blitzeball and 12 had it's moments...but none compare to my top three F.F.

This isn't a landslide victory for FFVII... huh? My ranking:

1. VII
2. VI
3. X-2 (shut up!)
4. X
5. IX

Can't remember the first ones or one of them might be in the top. Chrono Trigger (and Chrono Cross) owns them all though.

Ok, i know this is going to look really like flame baiting but honestley my top 3 are, in order

X
X-2
VIII

X gets a lot of love so theres no need to explain that, but X-2 gets soo much hate so i figure I should back that up. Yes, the level of sexulization in X-2 is pretty bad especially with Rikku, to the point where its almost rivalling X-Blades in shamelessness. Yes, its horrificly cheesy in parts and why they decided to pay tribute to Charlies Angels as a central theme I have no idea; and yet, there is something about the game that I find really charming and enjoyable. Its pretty light hearted and easy to get to grips with, the job system I found quite interesting as I never played any pre-PS1 FF games.
I cant really put my finger on it but I really do just enjoy that game.

I played VII when i was younger but to be honest i was probably a little to young and just could'nt get to grips with it same with 8. However after completing X I went back to try them again and well...I know VII is beloved by many but come on, that game has not aged well and again, I just couldnt get into it.

VIII I find funny because, I finished that because it hasn't aged too badly at all, and yet when playing it, every fibre in my body is screaming 'THIS IS A TERRIBLE GAME'. And yettheres a charm to it that just keeps bringing me back lol.

Anyway please dont think im flame baiting, I have no problem with VII I could just never get into it and going back now I dont think Id enjoy it.

My favorite has to simply Final Fantasy... (with a nod to the late James Doohan) no bloody II, III, IV, or any other roman numeral...

It's the only FF game that felt "open" to me... Sure, the story was linear, but the party was 100% player-made and movement across the world was largely unfettered and completely exploration-based. They may the next cave is "to the west", but there is still a lot of guesswork in finding the right route through the mountains to find it. (More than once I can recall having to limp back to a previous village to heal and resupply before ever finding the next dungeon.)

FFVII is second on my list, though I'll admit it's likely just nostalgia... That game, and the PSX to play it, was the sum of my second paycheck from my freshman year job.
