right... because Shaun of the Dead is obscure. Unless your American or Australian (and i dont think its obscure to them) then its POPULAR AS FUCK. It's one of the most highly acclaimed comedys of the last 20 years in Britain.

And The Fifth Element? It's not THAT obscure.
OR MOVIES THAT ARE JUST WEIRD!
they aren't actually that weird. Dodgeball especially is absolutely generic. Shaun of the dead is FANTASTIC, and to that end, i suppose it's weird. as the majority of movies these days arent.
But if it's obscure films you want. obscure films you shall have.

Probably my favourite that comes to mind is: Outlaw [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758771/]. It's brutal.

more recently: Dylan Moran's A Film With Me In It [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139319/]

older british CONmedy: Shooting Fish [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120122/]

Local (Western Australia): Last Train To Freo [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848592/]

Star-studded, but pretty out there: The Fountain [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/]

a few others. not what I'd call obscure though, but few people I know have seen them:
Pan's Labrynth, Dark City, Revolver, and In Bruges.

All of these are pretty dark. which probably explains their relative obscurity

I thought In Bruges was hilarious. :)

And I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth, but i've seen another movie by that director called "The Devil's Backbone". It's brilliant.

Titan A.E.

Moonchild (Gackt stars in it, and it's amazing)

Dragonheart
Is Dragonheart obscure?
I would have said that it was just old and forgotten about.

Does that make it obscure even if it was popular in it's day?

So far this thread is mostly well known films, or indie films with a still strong following. I can think of only three movies that could qualify as "obscure" and everyone should see for one reason or another.
1) Hard Candy
2) Requiem for a Dream
3) Elephant

Look them up, watch them. I don't demand you understand them, but they are profound.
I love Elephant, the ending shocked me to the point of making a thread about cinematic techniques.

Also i've heard that Requiem For A Dream is really good, though I haven't seen it.
It's where the music of the same name originated if i'm thinking of the same one. :)
No, the music came long before the movie. The track that most people know from the movie is the main score piece, Lux Aeterna. It's been used countless places now, and is an incredibly moving piece of music.

Repo! The Genetic Opera

Never heard anyone talk about it, never saw any advertisement and I haven't found it on DVD.
The only reason I know it existed is because of TvTropes and the wikipedia effect.
I think i've heard of this one..........something about renting organs, no?
Not renting, more like a world where organ transplants are the latest fashion.

Saints and Soldiers was quite a good World War 2 movie.
The Woodsman was excelent, if depressing

And I know Leon isn't really obscure, but I don't know anyone else who has seen it.

Oh right. I haven't heard much about it except that they repossess the organs if you can't pay or something to that effect...

Saints and Soldiers?
Did that have Mel Gibson in it?

I think I might have it on DVD....

Mine would be "How to Rob a Bank". I caught it on the independent film channel and loved it.
Is that the one where they use a fake piggy bank with a souped up remote controlled fire engineen in it?

  • I don't think that qualifies as obscure. At least not internationally. It's been on cable over here.

i watched the butterfly effect the otherday, that WAS obscure. not my favorite though. im going with something more like shipping news or maybe saints and soliders, although thats not too bad for obscuraty...

Requiem for a dream is a hard one to wrap your head around. It tooke me a few runs to really get it.

My sugestions for great flicks that may be "obscure" have to be Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Jim Carry is awsome in that one. Also Black Sheep is outstanding (Its about zombie sheep. Nuf said)

Dancer in the Dark was pretty damn awesome, and made me cry more than any other film I've ever seen. I don't know anyone who's heard of it, let alone seen it, but it starred Bjork, so it can't be that unknown.

A Boy and His Dog, a mid 70s classic and I'm sure that's very obscure.
Most of you will be more familure with the movie that rips it off without mercy, Mad Maxx.
