Not necessarily when you start playing the game, but the opening video for Left4Dead sets the entire seen perfectly and if you have surround sound and a dark room it can freak the hell out of your friends who have never played it before.

Bioshock almost goes without mention at this point.

I've always liked the Killzone intros, however I have to agree with everyone about how well done the Bioshock intro was.
I agree, Visari's speeches for both Killzone intros were amazing, and Bioshock was another game with an amazing intro

I strongly enjoyed the intro sequence for Mass Effect [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1fdV37gCB4].

It's all in SPAAACCCEEE which is a 10x multiplier on awesome for me plus it gives some interesting back story which assuages my love of good storytelling, something that is sadly missing in most games these days.

Bioshock, Final Fantasy X, Dungeon Keeper 2 and Mass Effect stand out to me as games whose opening sequences/cutscenes immediately hooked me.

Probably not so coincidentally, they're also some of my all-time favorite games that I still want to replay from time to time.

Half Life 2 because, in a sense, it had you play through the opening sequence. You had no guns and no health bar so it was almost like you were playing the cutscene. In fact, the whole 'play the cutscenes' idea that they use throughout the series by never removing your view from Freeman's view is why I love the series.

I've said this a million times, but nothing beats the opening sequence of Beyond Good & Evil.
The music, the cinematography, the atmosphere... it's just magical.

Dead Rising's (slightly hidden) opening sequence in which a woman and her daughter are driving through Willamette. Everything about it was creepy, all the lines were delivered surprisingly well for a Capcom game, and it set the mood perfectly for the game. "Mommy, what was that noise?" "Nothing, sweetie...I just ran over a big frog."
i have to agree with you on this one
but another good one was fable 2 my poor poor sister

Final Fantasy VII and IX really caught me up in the games world straight away. Having to follow NPCs gave those introductory sequences a sense of urgency and momentum which helped to quickly engage me.

Bioshock, HL2 and COD4 also had very good intros. Bioshock being the one that impressed me the most out of those games.

I'm gonna have to go with Bioshock. The mood and the atmosphere were very well set.
