The Dark Knight Returns (screw you haters, I like it)
You're thinking of The Dark Night Strikes Again. Tons of people liked DKR.
Not on this website. On this website, it seems Frank Miller's Batman is considered a travesty to the character.
Well, the dude beat Superman shitless. That certainly gives it a whole new layer of awesome in my book.
Funnily enough, that's a common complaint: that they overpower Batman and underpower everyone else.

DKR spoilers

[spoiler/]I certaily wouldn't say he was overpowered at all. It took planning, masses of technology, help and a hell lot of luck to take Superman down. The fact that Superman was slightly arragant about it and wasn't expecting any kind of challenge could also be taken into account.

The whole point of that conflict was the simple fact that you knew that Batman would loose. Though out the whole comic they had images of Batman struggling to be anywhere as great a hero as he was, worring about having a heart attack or breaking his hip. All the while on the other side you had panels of this god like character picking up tanks, saving people from burn planes, stopping nukes and basically just being an overpowered badass. You knew from the start that when Superman took on Batman he would be crushed like an insect.

Then, against all odds, he [b/]almost[/b] beats Superman. It was Brains again Braun, and Brains won (if you take Batman having a heart attack out of the equation). [/spoiler]

Spawn - the one which focused on Al, not yet really convinced with the new character.

The Killing Joke - very chilling origin story

Sandman - different types of awesome rolled into one. Also, Death is one of my favorite characters. EVER.

Watchmen - Really heavy read. Not unlike any other comic I've read. Gets real interesting from Rorschach's arrest.

If Manga counts, I'm gonna have to say Blade of the Immortal. The "On the Perfection of Anatomy" story arc is one of the darkest and probably scariest descent into madness I've ever witnessed. It also shows in gory detail events that would only be hinted at in other media.
Child murder anyone? Rape? Torture? Don't worry, it's all made in good taste and will have you feeling sorry for the characters.

Bone, it's like Mickey Mouse meets Lord of the Rings.

Watchmen, an utterly fantastic crime comic book.

Ultimate Spider-Man, it's definitely dropped a bit in quality, but it's still the uber example Spider-Man today.

Kingdom Come, Even if the story wasn't excellent (and a massive Take That towards the 90's), it'd be worth buying just for the artwork alone.

I've also read a little Deadpool and Blue Beetle, and I can't wait for more.

Watchmen. Hands down.
The only thing that comes close is Frank Millers Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

There is so much win inside that little spoiler box.

A year ago I would've said FABLES, but Willingham's conservative politics, particularly with regard to Israeli military aggression, began to creep into the book. Not overwhelmingly so, but enough to disenchant this longtime reader. I love Warren Ellis' FELL, particularly the commitment to stand-alone stories, jam-packed with content yet affordable. As for all-time faves, you can't go wrong with any of Morrison's work, though his recent SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY re-imagining is especially close to my heart.

First of all, Sandman rocks my socks.

But if you are looking for something new, try "The Pride of Baghdad" or "Ex Machina" by Brian K. Vaugn. They also rock my socks. Persepolis is pretty amazing for what it is, but I doubt its the kind of thing you are looking for.

This is probably whats stopping this comic from being my favourite of all time. Generally, I read comics when I can't be bothered to read a book. But Watchmen was an extremely heavy read, a lot more tiring that a lot books I've read. It was clever, thought provocing (sp?) and awesome, but it was quite a struggle to get though, unlike a lot of comics. Lets face it, they're books with lots of pictures.

And no, Manga doesn't count *glares*

I haven't read that many, but both Watchmen and V for Vendetta is awesome. Alan Moore really knows how to tell a story. I'm reading Sandman now. I haven't gotten that far, but what I've seen this far is amazingly good.
Keep going, it's one of the few comic book series I've read that starts awesome and gets better.

Watchmen FTW. On the other hand, I do love Deadpool. He's just just a deep and well developed character... Well, no, not in the slightest really, I just find him more likable than most because he dones't even try and take of that comic crap seriously.

Wow, no Supreme Power love? I mean where else will you see superman actually start demonstrating all the power he's got (Like causing a 10.8 kiloton explosion in antartica by FLYING INTO IT!). Also they explain exactly how fast Superman (or rather his analogue) would be able to slaughter people if he got angry.

Other than that Punisher (the MAX line). "They put the sights on top for a reason"

Green Lantern Corp

Legion of Superheroes

Young Avengers.

I'm only listing things off the top of my head that hasn't already been mentioned. Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol, Persepolis, American Splendor, Hey Mister, Scalped, SeaGuy, the Filth, Exterminates, Moonshadow, Mr. Punch, Hitman, Kyle Baker's Plastic Man, Alias, Animal Man, Runaways, The System, Sleeper, Zot, Seven Miles a Second, Flex Mentello, Finals, User, You Are Here, Black Orchid, Violent Cases, and Miracle Man.

Yes, I'm a huge nerd.

Strangly enough, I've never read a Deadpool comic, though I like the character in everything I've read he's been in (appart from maybe Ultimate Spiderman/Ultimate X-men team up. He was a completely different character). Maybe I should read the new secret invasion one.
