they awarded a 39/40 to FFXIII which was an awful game more deserving of 25/40
And "awful" game deserves a score which is above average?
Right then.

Oh, and as I always say in threads like these, opinions! Aren't they wonderful things?

I'm sure main difficulty here was that FFXIII-2 seems a vast improvement of FFXIII, so they had to give it a higher score, but seeing as FFXIII already had an almost perfect score....so yeah....either way I'm really stoked, FF13 with more freedom is just perfect for me.

honestly whats wrong with 13 it had a decent (not the best but ok) story it had a fun battle system (everyone complains about just hitting auto attack but at the same time its what you do in all the other rpgs of this nature hit the attack button and c what happens) It looked great and had an alright soundtrack the only thing i c is linearity but guess what a lot of games have that and even so it what a good way to keep the fast pace going in fact my least favorite part of the game was when it was no longer linear because it slowed down so much for me and i like open world I just beat morrowind again and finally got skyrim along with many other open world games.

In short this game is good I am not saying best game ever but god quit qq-ing about it being the worst game ever and the ratings it gets

Final Fantasy 6 was the only game I ever really got interested in. I've played almost all of the Final Fantasy games and I consider FF6 to be the best in the series. 14 characters, 12 of them with different and unique personalities (Umaro, my big furry trash compactor, and Gogo...I'm looking at you two) and the story line was just awesome. The main villian was, and could easily be, one of the most badass villians in the franchise. Oh, and try to forget that laugh. Even on 16-bit, that maniacal laughter is haunting, vile and somewhat demonic. Also, it wasn't a graphics whore (but that's just my minor nitpicking about the game and disgust towards what the franchise has become, IMO).

Could break a dozen chairs over Square Enix right now for not focusing on their better franchises.

Einhander 2
Secret of Evermore 2
Another Legend or Secret of Mana game.
Another Chrono game.

Any of those are worth making over another Final Fantasy.
Would you mind if I suggested that the bolded franchise be turned into an MMO? I've had an idea about imagining doing something like this in my head for about 6 months and the things I've gone over in my mind are quite interesting (but that might be because the only person I ever believe whose thoughts are truly interesting is me).

On a side note, FFX13 and FFX13-2 will never be considered the worst in my eyes. That title belongs to Final Fantasy 3 (Japanese number).

This makes me more suspicious. On further inspection, they have ranked every final fantasy game, even the non-cannon ones extremely high.

Paid score fixing from square? Unlikely, this site seems to be too small times for Square to even bother. Maybe they just fan boys?

Whenever a reviewer gives a game I know is terrible, a great review (and for stupid reasons too), I tend to disregard any other opinion they have about anything else.
As for FFXIII-2 getting a 40/40 from Famitsu, you have to consider two things:
1. Its Famitsu
2. Its a review of the sequel to a game that most die-hard FF fans love
I consider Famitsu an unbiased and good place to go to for game reviews like I consider the Bible a good book to read for lessons on morality and equality.
Famitsu gave FFXIII a 39/40. The game has some (a lot of) issues. I still think the game is good, but not 39/40 good considering the shortcomings.

Famitsu also gave Skyrim a 40/40. The consensus is that Skyrim is a great game (and I agree to an extent), but still not that great; not perfect A great.

But don't let me stop you. If you really like and trust Famitsu, go for it. For me Famitsu is just like the other review sites: not trustworthy.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has them (except for the unlucky few with the no asshole disease).
You are only looking for a review to confirm your own opinion about this game, so keep looking and I am sure you will find some who give FF XIII-2 a very low rating.

In the meantime, I am sure my girlfriend will happily play part 2, because (even though every reviewer and their dog gave it a low score), she enjoyed the previous installment immensly. Just goes to show that you don't always have to have your own opinion shared by everyone, and you don't always need to agree with everything that is written. If you like a game, you play it because YOU like it, not because some reviewer says that you should like it. Or hate it, whatever happens to be case.

Well it's a Japanese magazine and Final Fantasy products are Japans bible, it would be pretty damn blasphemous if anything with a FF badge got less then a perfect score.
This was only the 18th perfect score Famitsu have awarded, 30 games have got 39/40. XIII and X got 39s and XII and now XIII-2 have got 40s. That's a lot of FF games that have not got perfect scores. That is FF I through to FFX-2 before they gave one a perfect score.

Japan has a very different culture and as such have very different tastes. The idea that their review scores can be used for a typical western audience is stupid. FFXIII for instance was voted as the 'best game ever' by Famitsu readers. Outside of Japan it got a few 4s and 5s because the reviewers did not like that it was so linear (in other words they reviewed it as an open world RPG when that is not what it is). The same goes for characters and story. Anime fans will tell you that there is a massive difference between what Japan considers good story and characters compared to the West.

At the end of the day anyone complaining about a FF game because it does not conform to Western norms for RPGs is stupid for wasting their money. What else do you expect when you buy a Japanese game that is largely made for a Japanese audience.
On the other hand, look at Famitsu's track record a bit more closely. The magazine has been running for 25 years. Of the 18 perfect scores awarded, 3 were awarded this year(1/6 of the total). All but three were awarded in the last decade. In the first twelve years of Famitsu's existence, not a single perfect score was awarded. There are only two possible conclusions to draw from this. Either the entire staff of Famitsu is actually from the present or near future and went back to 1986 to start a magazine company, or the publications standards have gone down in recent years. Either way a 40/40 in 2011 obviously is not as big a deal as it was in 1998 when Ocarina of Time won the first one.

Square still baffles me at how bad their decision making skills have been for the last few years. Seriously, as soon as Enix touched them it all went to shit.

FF13 is the most returned game in the history of Japan, which is, arguably, its target audience. Most Final Fantasy fans hated it in the states as well. It is by far one of their most reviled products, up there with Dirge of Cerberus and X-2, if you keep track of how most haters feel.

And then they decided to make a sequel and two spin-offs.

Seriously. What the fuck?

The game could of been given a 10/40 and I still would of bought it, a 20 year habit is a hard thing to kick.

Itll still hold my attention better than that one time I got skyrimmed.

See, I actually liked FF13. Yes, it was linear, but then again, so were all the FF games to a point. You just have the illusion of free will, because you can't see the walls that are forcing you down a particular route.

FF13 removed those walls a little late for my liking, I honestly didn't notice them being removed until after the end credits, and my NG+ save kicked in.

And I liked the Paradigm. You got to play around with different group balances without having to suffer Game Overs if you made a particularly bad set of choices. It also made the battles more varied, as different stages of boss fights needed different Paradigms. You just can't get that with the pre-battle planning that most games have. Especially not when you develop characters to the point when they're useless in other roles.

And the scores... This is why I don't use numbers. Giving something 40/40 infers that it's perfect. No game is ever perfect. Even the highest mark I've used (A-Extra) still gives room for faults. It's just that the particular area is outstanding, and needs some special attention.

And chances are that if a site constantly reviews an entire series high, then you've got a fanboy reviewing it, which is going to throw all the scores miles off. Best to have 2-3 people reviewing it, like some of the magazines used to with bigger titles, and aggregate the scores.

it really is something that FF haters always seem to mix up. you can dislike the game all you want, i dont care its your choice, but stop confusing fact with opinion. it is your opinion that FF13 was bad, but in terms of video games and our best attempts to compare quality it is anything but. even with its linearity which was an obvious flaw to many, especially in the west it still manages an 83 on metacritic.
You mean metacritic which is composed entirely of opinions? Doesn't matter if they're a die-hard CoD fan, a pro reviewer, the world's biggest FF nut or a rabid monkey flailing wildly at a keyboard, everyone who posts is giving their opinion of FF13. The fact that a lot of people have posted positive opinions doesn't actually make the game better. FF13 may be technically impressive (for my part, based on videos and screenshots the graphics look nice but they aren't really making the most of them with daft looking characters) and well-crafted but those things don't automatically translate into an enjoyable gaming experience.

OT: I don't really care about FF games anymore after how bored I got with FFX. I, like everyone else of my generation, was in love with FFVII but that was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. The battle system was simple and excellent, the levelling was straightforward, the story and characters were enjoyable and memorable, and on the whole it was a great experience. Later FF games I've played had weaker characters (I personally wanted to stab every single **** in FFX in their stupid smug faces) or more complicated battle systems. Fair play for trying new things, but I enjoyed FFVII's battles for the sheer simplicity. I didn't want to have to play a silly minigame to get max damage from my limit break, or unlock new abilities on that stupid sphere grid thing when I levelled up.

XIII was merely cutscenes, corridors and combat, self-admittedly inspired by call of duty's cinematic linearity.
Ok, I've been wondering this for a while and I just HAVE to ask, Final Fantasy 10 was roughly the same as you've described FF 13 to be, but that's almost universally considered to be one of the last truly great Final Fantasies yet. So my question is this: What's FF 10 got that FF 13 doesn't?

Personally, I think FF 13 is pretty good, I love it's characters, story, and battle system, it's right up there with FF 10 in my opinion.

FF13 was not a good game. It wasn't even in the ballpark of good games. It was in fact a horrible game, not only horrible but the most disappointing game of the last decade.

What was the point of making a FF game if it was going to deviate so far from what makes a FF game what it is.

Fortunately I will not buy 13-2, SE after an almost 15 relationship, its over between you and me, I will not be tricked again.

I once was a FF fangirl, then I took an arrow to the knee.
