I'm gonna disagree too, FF13 was a good game. Not the best in the series by a long way but certainly around the middle. I thought the linearity was just the result of all those people bitching about FF12 being too awesome for them to handle and getting lost everywhere.
The hate for FFXII baffles me. I thought it was one of the best in the series. It certainly was in the top 3 for characters. Balthier for the win.
It's three reasons in particular.

1. Vaan- He can literally be taken completely out of the story and nothing would change at all. I think Basch would have made a better lead.

2. The gameplay switch felt more reminiscent of an MMORPG...only without the MMO part and just seemed to feel a bit odd.

3. The game does take a while to get going. Not talking about cutscenes here, it just takes a while for someone to properly get into it in all honesty.

These are the primary reasons for the hatred of 12, although i will admit i liked the license system and some of the other aspects, it isn't exactly the strongest entry to the series.

OT: i do think 13 did a few things right. I didn't mind the combat system, and they atleast did a better job with the lead then 12 and the world seemed atleast somewhat interesting. But...it was just boring for me and felt less like a FF game and more like a linear turn based action game.

Considering those problems, and the fact alot of fans felt pretty betrayed by 13's gameplay choices, i really can't blame the skepticism. Even then...i know some are just kind of pissed that Versus still isn't out yet, but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

I think these people just want their precious FFVII remake. grr I hate these people. they make us FF fans look like a bunch of retards.

EDIT: WOW people talk about cut-scenes as if they don't matter.*facepalm* the combat system is one of the best FF has had. and STORY is what matters in a FF game. not graphics not gameplay BUT STORY. it would seem people don't like complex stories anymore which is a damn shame.

also this is same reviewer site that gave SKYRIM 40/40

A Japanese developed game designed with Japanese people in mind, though not exclusively, happens to score well in a Japanese magazine?!?
STOP THE PRESSES!!!

In all seriousness, I fail to see the hate for the game. I personally didn't like it, but it was a very good game in it's own right. XIII-2 actually has me interested in that particular universe again and will hopefully satisfy me until either Versus is done or I manage to get my hands on Type-0.

Honestly I played less than 30 minutes of FFXIII. I rented it from gamefly and returned it withing the same hour of getting it. So I doubt I'm going back to FFXIII and I seriously doubt I'm getting XIII-2 if the main change to the combat is QTEs. So whatever I guess.

TO the people complaining about the battle system:if it stayed the same though out all games then you would most likely be complaining about how FF battle system has become stagnant.

finally, sanity on the internet. 12 was amazing, as good as my personal favorite, 8. i was truly hoping that 13 would follow the same mold....instead we got HOPE and the PARADIGM SYSTEM

I hope you mean Final Fantasy 3 for the NES and not Final Fantasy VI for the SNES - for one thing, God only knows who the main character of FFVI is, and for two, those are some of the best and most memorable characters I've ever seen, right up there with the cast of Chrono Trigger.
DS actually. I only played the re-release but yeah, actual 3 not 6 under a different name. There's just something about 6 I didn't like, I can't put my finger on it but it just didn't get my interest like other games did.

It may just be me who thinks this, but the standards of Final Fantasy games have severely dropped since Hironobu Sakaguchi left Squeenix.

The last game he worked on was X and while I liked XII it just didn't have that same feel to it that all the games pre X-2 had (hell even X-2 still had the Final Fantasy vibe about it).

The problem is that a lot of people these days equate Final Fantasy with stunning over the top cut scenes and nonsensical stories, which is what they have been since VII (well except the story part, thats always been true).

I mean it's not like they had the most complicated control schemes in the world, but they managed to look pretty and still be a fun game.

The thing I cant understand is how people can call XIII (and by extension XIII-2) a game?

The only control you can exhibit is to move your characters around in the small enviroments they've provided and switch between AI controlled fighting styles.

This is not a game. It is a big budget CGI movie with limited interactivity.

Therefore, as a serious FF and Square fan I will not be wasting my time or money on XIII-2.

Think i'll just play Blue Dragon or Xenoblade Chronicles.

I just want to know when FFXIII Versus is coming out, because that actually looks somewhat interesting. Get that brought out.

Famitsu giving perfect scores shouldn't be a big deal anymore. People shouldn't respect their reviews anymore. They have been handing out 40/40s to loads of stuff recently. It doesn't mean anything anymore.

WHY DOES NO ONE CARE FOR THE STORY??????????????.

EDIT: how can people love Versus if they know next to nothing about it?

Final Fantasy is dead to me. The characters are stupid, the plot is less than interesting and cheesier than a pizza and the "action" horrible.

When there are so many good alternatives I cba spending time on such garbage. I used to be a fan, but I got (not an arrow to the knee) over it.

Better games that I'd rather spend time on:

Skyrim
Dragon Age: Origins
Witcher 1/2
Baldurs Gate

Japan...you have some catching up to do.

It's real time combat isn't it? The promotional material for it so far looks really good. It looks like a darker take on FF, and it reminds me of FF7 and Crisis Core from what I've seen.

Versus looks like it could take the franchise somewhere new, which is why I'm anticipating it.

From Wikipedia I found all this
Director Tetsuya Nomura has stated that the gameplay will be a realistic derivation of Kingdom Hearts's battle system with some elements of a third-person shooter. Nomura has also stated that the game will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (i.e. Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a world based on reality.[10] According to Nomura, the world of Final Fantasy Versus XIII is based on the real world and will have actual real world global crisis situations happening in it.[11] In further pursuit of this theme, Nomura has stated that he wants the characters to be "believable as real people" and thus realistic in body movement and facial expressions. As a testament towards his desire for realistic characters, he appointed Jun Akiyama to be the event director due to his experience directing cut-scenes with characters that felt like real people in Final Fantasy XII.

Nomura stated in July 2011 that most of the cut-scenes in the game will be real-time and the player will still be in control of the main character while the cut-scene is happening.[12] The player will be able to run around and perform various actions during the cut-scenes such as in Heavy Rain. Nomura has called these new types of cut-scenes "Real-Time Events" and they will make up all the cut-scenes in the game.[12] However, he has also stated that the game will also have some pre-rendered CGI scenes.[12] The real-time events will be triggered by the player unexpectedly and with no forewarning unlike Final Fantasy XIII. Players should expect to suddenly be attacked or trigger certain real-time events while just walking around. For example, when Noctis reaches a pedestrian bridge, a behemoth suddenly appears and attacks. Another example is a plane crashing into the road in front of Noctis while he is running down it. Nomura states that implementing these kinds of real-time events, which transition seamlessly into the flow of gameplay, takes a long time in terms of development.[13] There will also be a new real-time lighting system in place for a day/night cycle. The player also has the ability to take photos whenever they want with Noctis' cell phone.

Battles will take place in real-time environments using all regions of the field, from the tops of buildings down to street level. Nomura said that the game will feature battles that take place in areas with great differences in height, as shown in the trailer, and the players will have to fight using the full environment. This means fighting what's in front, as well as above and below (vertical battles).[14] The battle interface consists of several aspects, mainly Magic, Item, Summons and EX-ARTS. In addition, there are highly animated character portraits on the lower right corner of the screen. The portrait will change according to the character's feelings and current movement similar to Star Ocean: The Last Hope albeit in a wider variety.
Sounds great to me, like they're merging Kingdom Hearts, Gears of War, Half Life, Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy. Could be one hell of a game.

They aren't better games they are different games in a different genre at least compare to games in the same sub genre.

And none of those games are linear RPGs they all have an open world concept, or give you freedom. Final Fantasy is a linear RPG as in you play it to go through the story and your actions have 0 influence on the outcome. Once people start understanding this than maybe they will stop comparing apples to oranges, both are fruit but they are very different. The same goes with RPGs.

true this could be a great game OR it ends up like Duke Nukem forever. I just hope that this game will be able to live up to the ridiculous amount of hype for it.

We'll never agree here but I'll putt all of the games above in the RPG compartment. Either because they make you play a character that they present, or because they rely heavly on upgrading stats and leveling og because you make your own character.

No matter the reason, they are all RPGs and I feel pretty justified comparing them. Are they similar games? No. But they share the same genre. RPGs.

And imo, FF13 was garbage. No matter what kind of fruit you compare it to. Feel free to feel differently, but I will not feel bad for comparing a game to other games within the same genre.

I think FFXIII is a great game. but each is entitled to their own opinion and I can respect that, as long as people don't try to show their opinions as fact then i have no beef with people who disliked this game.
