I don't think it's so much a question about enjoying FF as it is one of enjoying JRPG's. FF is just the classic example, because it's the most popular series in the West (and probably the East too). I personally enjoy them because when I started playing video games, Western RPG's were mostly a bunch of sad, ugly dungeon-crawly pseudo 3D pieces of crap. Final Fantasy was something completely new and awesome to me, and that first encounter meant a lot. I also like that most Final Fantasy games focus on telling you a story with some characters, instead of merely appealing to your ego and making you, the player, a personified hero of some virtual world.

Let me explain why FF7 was the greatest game ever made (prior to the release of FF IX).

GRAPHICS
FF7 looked amazing. Laugh all you want about the whole "Popeye" thing, but at the time the scenery, the fight scenes and more importantly the FMV were ground-breakingly good.

MUSIC
FF7's soundtrack is epic.

STORY
FF7's story is beyond epic. It was the first time I ever really encountered a proper RPG. All the RPG's before that had been rather lacklustre; you are a Generic Hero / group of Generic Heroes, who must save the land of Generic from the Generic Evil (possibly by Randomly Assigned Date XXXX). Go forth for no adequately explained reason!

FF7 really pulled me in. It hits the ground running, and it never stops making you feel like everything you do has a point. That was unlike any RPG I'd seen up until that point.

WOW FACTOR.
The game was THREE DISKS LONG! Okay, Disk 3 was a bit empty on plot, but still the idea of a game that big was almost scary.

A lot of people diss FF7 now, but I spend more time dissing the retards. Case in point, Aerith. Anyone who calls Aeris 'Aerith' is a retard. Her name is Aeris. It is pronounced Aeris.

I honestly can't see the problem, because this isn't a "Halo" situation - prior to FF7, I can't name a single RPG on the market. It wasn't until after FF7 that the RPG / JRPG genre became big. Halo, by contrast, was yet another FPS, as if we didn't already have thirty+ of them.

To be honest I really only played the tactics games, sure I did play seven but it was just so depressing. But it did have one of my favorite characters in it, Cid.

Hang on a second. It's japanese, duh. Her name would actually be Ae-ri-su, as japanese words never end on a consonant. (So sayeth my japanese ex housemate)

More importantly, you can repeat your points as all other fanboys have time and time again. I'm not going to stop you. I just found the graphics average, the soundtrack one of Uematsu's blandest ever and the story and characters lame. But I like FFVIII so you'll probably consider me a retard.

*nit pick moment* NO NO NO!! that was a mistranslation it really IS Aerith. Advent Children confirms it, crisis core confirms it, and most of all, every freaking documentary and article talking about the game confirms it.

And, um... VII and VIII are my favorites in the series, closely followed by X-2 (oh no I didn't!).
FFX-2 felt like a 'chick game', however I will say this.
I LIKED there combat system. Out of all the FF games, That was probably one of the best combat systems they have ever had.
it WAS real time, It was very Strategic, It used a JOB & A Grid System, In many ways it combined some of the best ideas they have had when it concerns combat, and gameplay in one game.
Agreed on every point. I loved the battle system to death, pretty much.

Plus, I can be very, very girly, so "chick games" and I definitely get along well. (Assuming that the game mechanics are enjoyable, of course. That goes for all games I play.)

That's what I mean by characters. They changed from focused people who just wanted to get this horrible evil mission over with while keeping Yuna alive. In the next game she became a pop-culture singer and... yeah I can go on and on abotu this but that's the basics of how I feel.
Well, to be fair it wasn't really Yuna at the beginning of the game, and other than that her only real musical number was the oh-so-beautiful 1000 Words at around the game's midpoint.

Well, Japanese words can never end with a consonant since every Japanese consonant must be followed by a vowel... except for 'n', but that's because 'n' counts as both a vowel and a consonant in this peculiar language.

Additionally, certains consonant sounds are in many cases interchangeable, and especially so when dealing with foreign words:
'z' with 'ts' or 'j' or 's' (so a word like "rising" can become "ra-i-ji-n-gu")
'r' with 'l' (suddenly Rock Lee is Lock Ree)
's' with 'th' (see: Aerith)

And here's the thing about "Aerith Gainsborough": It's not a Japanese name.

"Aerith" (spelled "E-a-ri-su" in Japanese, using Katakana) is supposed to play on the very English word "Earth". Just remove the vowels from 'ri' and 'su', and replace the 's' with a 'th'.

(Please look at my post above yours for the truth behind the name. >_>)
So you're saying that she isn't named Aerith?
I know about the Earth thing, I've known that since I've played FFVII for the first time. But she is named Aerith Gainsborough regardless of being Japanese or not. Cloud Strife isn't a a Japanese name is it? And no arguments there right?

And her name in Wapanese sounds like, Earisu Geinzubûru.
No, I'm saying that her name is Aerith, but that it could have very well been Earith if not for that Square quite correctly predicted that English-speakers would have pronounced it wrong.

(People would go around calling her Ear-ith/Ear-is, when pronounciation of the 'ea' should be more along the lines of "air" or above mentioned "earth".)

Actually in regards to hate on the FF series, within FF Fans, it will be the newest ones that get crucified. Going from my observations, nobody liked X (Supposedly) when it came out, It was MY first PS2 title and first Final Fantasy, now as Linear (and I MEAN LINEAR) the world was, the characterization (Not including one very very bad scene) was really good, some of the bosses were unforgivably hard (Yunalesca, Seymour Flux)

As for FFXII, I loved the game personally, I think the OVERALL characterization was good (There's a whole topic explaining this on Gamefaqs) I think the story was really great, and the game wasn't boring if you didn't use gambits for your main character, just cause they were there didn't mean I HAD to use them.

If I had to criticize 12 (And I DO) then I would say it's problem was it's pacing.
Final Fantasy XII's Pacing Was MOTHER FUCKING HORRENDOUS.

That is why people mistake the game as having no story, because the pacing is so bad you can lose interest in the story for how long it takes to move on.

Other than that, I liked pretty much all the games, VI is a classic, you want rich characters with an awesome story, and a villain that was actually scary, go VI.

as for VII... I haven't played through it much, I wanna finish Disgaea and Persona 3 more than I want to go back for that game. I don't think it's bad... I just think I'm spoiled on expectations now. Would I play it if it was re-released on PS3 updated? yes I would. But I would do the same for VI.
Speaking as a long time FF fan (I have finished every game in the series) FF10 is by far my favorite. FF6 had the distinction until I played 10, and of the three PSX games I felt FF8 was the best. I typically like the newer games in any franchise though, because they usually feature lots of gameplay, mechanical, and graphical improvements. I guess I'm weird like that.

Still I think that most people will say their favorite is whichever one they happened to play first, and for a lot of people that was FF7.

I always prefered Aeris. It just sounds nicer. Plus I've always prefered localisation to direct translation. Guess what guys. It's not Cloud. It's fucking CLOW-DO. Absurd.

Anyway the games have, with a few exceptions, generally offered fantastic worlds complete with decent graphics and sweet storylines. They're pure escapism but I've always enjoyed them with the exception of x-2 and 12 which didn't really grab me.

Troll.
Not at all. I'm simply pointing out that some Japanese words don't translate into English very well and vice versa. That being said I personally prefer English aproximations to simply carting the word over. Like the whole 'Shinigami/death god' shit that went down with Bleach.

At the very least, JRPGs are cultural experiences that display sophisticated craftsmanship on the part of Japanese developers.
I tip my hat to thee sir, that was truly a great way to look at things & an excellent choice of words. If this sounds sarcastic, it isn't.

No, it's Kuraudo. >_>

And Aeris was the more or less direct (and incorrect) translation.
Aerith is the localization of the Japanese name derived from an English word.
