Ah, FF VII poor translation references always rock.
And actually the biggest one is right in front of your nose. Aeries is actually called Aerith.

*shock*

And Amnestic don't worry 'us' weirdos are in great numbers, so you won't get lonely ;o.
I always thought that was deliberate rather than a translation error. It seems like a pretty big thing to fuck up.

My name is Pedro Steckecilo and I like FFVII,

Granted it's not my series favorite, never was. It was however the very first videogame I ever finished and hence it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Overall I would say that FFVII presented a new and shiny looking Final Fantasy, complete with FMV and flashy battles with new and interesting camera angles. No FF has yet to do Limit Breaks/Overdrives whatever as well as they were done in FFVII and I did really enjoy the quests for the final limit breaks and final weapons. The graphics have NOT aged well and the story was poorly translated in the day and REALLY needs a recut.

Also it has one of my favorite Boss Battle Themes out of any Final Fantasy and I do enjoy the Materia System more than the Junction System from FFVIII.

Character wise Cloud is and always was an annoying hero, Sephiroth while okay as a villain, is only remembered because he was pretty and tragic. Aeris has spawned a crappy cadre of virginal white mage heroines that still persist to this day (I'm looking at you Estelle/Polka).

Story wise the Environmentalism theme is okay, what FFVII did present were some AWESOME moments. The Rocket Takeoff? The Submarine Battle? The Highway Chase? The Weapon Battles... all of this stuff was pretty cool, not amazing, but still pretty cool.

Okay, okay so I should have put relatively rare compared to other JRPG series, also the voice acting tends to be a little better; have you tried playing Enchanted Arms?

Yes the character actualy speaks that line exactly as I typed it; every word is emphasised in flat monotone and its painful to hear.

I'm a weirdo, I haven't actually bouhgt an FPS in about a year now, and that was only because someone told me Call Of Duty 4 was compelling and had decent characterization.

By the way, I like RPGs because they are like books, I like reading so the two go together well.

I'm pretty sure most people who like RPG's as their preferred genre are interested in them because they are "like books", hence the overt and untouchable storylines in Final Fantasy and other JRPG's don't really bother us as much as they do others.

If a game ever gets a "great story" plug I always need to buy it.

Well it's Japanese. I doubt your name sounds very normal to them. I know mine probably doesn't.

Aerith is a Japanese name? Japanese doesn't have the "th" sound and like someone said above the translators mistook the "su" syllable for "s" so her name would actualy be "Aerisu" "a-li-su" (closest way i can phonetically type it out sounds like "Alice"). Also I realise i'm probably preaching to hte converted so to speak and that your point is still valid :).

Simple, for many many people it was their first taste of the FF saga. I owned Sega systems including the Saturn so I missed the Nintendo FF years. So FF VII was there when I finally switched to PSone.

A lot of FF VII's love is based on that memory, it also help that it had a good story, good characters, a decent bad guy who who was actually a twisted good guy and for the time it had great graphics. It also had some rare stuff never seen before and in some case still not seen. Until FF VII had come along I had never played a game that had a fairly involved story line. Most games were good guy, bad guy, kill stuff, find bad guy, kill bad guy. FF VII had a story line that twisted and developed the characters they weren't as one sided as most typical games and of course their was the big one. Aeris death cemented something in a lot of peoples' minds. Here was you watching as a key character, who you may have developed and used suddenly being killed and not that fake will turn up at a later point and let you play her again killed, but genuine dead and gone. Something that I had never seen before in a game and not seen since.

Now I haven't played any of the FF games prior to FF VII so there may well be a chance that some of the stuff I mentioned above turned in those games but then we return to my original point being that for a lot of people FF VII will have been the first game in which they saw these things.

Hell I dunno. An English name translated to Japanese and then translated back? I poked the wiki page but I didn't see an origins note like most names do.

It may have been some confusion over a possible theme with Cloud and Aerith/Earth. I dunno, I think if a name is supposed to have significance it shouldn't be translated directly but translated into a word in the other language sharing that meaning. Well, at butchered so it sounds a bit more natural.

Such as L, which may be enigmatic and mysterious in Japanese where I don't remember any equivalent to the L (Or was it R?) but in America it loses that kind of an impact since it's an actual letter.

So... Aeris is a mistranslated name for the girl with the pink bow in her hair and her name might have some significance as to the game FF7 itself right?

It had great immersion, the music, the world, Cloud, Aeris, the story - I didn't stand a chance.

I didn't liked Cloud. In my book he's probably one of the weakest caracthers in the FF series, the problem with him is that he's trying to pass the tough look but at the same time he's a emotional pussy, so basically I get mixed signals from him and get confused. Then I look at mommas boy Sephiroth and just melt.
Can I rename Sephiroth to Oedipus?

I did look up a full game walk through of FF7 and got up to the whole Sephiroth thing and for the record i do like the motivation and the story but what do you mean and just melt (i mena is that good or bad)
