Hehe... I'm 'xited. ^_^

Of course I'll probably still be playing Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2, but whatever. If I mysteriously disappear from these forums early 2010, I exploded from an overload of awesome.

50+ hours of turn based combat?
ff's combat system isn't all that bad now. It's fairly free-flowing and a lot closer to playing other types of rpg
FFXII has gone back to Turn based combat.
ahhh, no it hasn't, the combat is only semi-turn based.

"Command Synergy Battle is the name (declared in-game) of the system used in Final Fantasy XIII. It derives the flow of time from ATB as each character has their own ATB gauge. The ATB gauge in turn acts like an action point meter that's divided up into equal sections (a similar system was used in Enix's game Robotrek). Each action consumes a portion of the ATB gauge, for example attacking consumes one point, while casting a power spell consumes three. Commands can be chained so as long as there's enough action points. When the player decides on what commands to take, the player presses another button to execute the commands for the character to do. If the player decides not to use the entire ATB gauge, the character's turn will come sooner. Unlike regular ATB, the player only controls one character at a time.

At the end of each battle, the player is judged based on performance (such as time and combos) on a rating of one to five stars.

Hinted features include the ability to chain up to five different commands and allow switching of the controlled character at any time during battle. " - from the final fantasy wiki.

Anyway, this is great news, I'm starting to get tired of games that I can finish in a couple of days. Even better is the fact that it won't have any DLC for the Japanese version, so here's hoping there's none in the western version.

Same here.

Also, if anyone in Queensland happens to hear a sonic boom on March 9, that's just me running to my local EB.

Well I spent around 80 hours on each Final Fantasy Game -- and Lost Odyssey (and I've completed them all), so it isn't news to me.

EDIT: Anyway, what's wrong with turn-based combat? I love turn based combat! I thought it was most enjoyable on FF VIII

So? Persona 3 and 4 are at least 90 hours, i've clocked over 100 hours in Pokemon, Fallout 3, and other Final Fantasies aswell, it's a good sign
If I can't make it last over 80+ hours without repeating something, it's not a real game. I bet I could easily make it last 100+, if they have some minigames that are actually fun this time (here's looking at you FFXII, you minigame less dullard)

I'd hope at least 50, that's kind of standard fare for RPGs on this generation of consoles.

So far I'm yet to see any character that will fill the 'Jar Jar Binks' role (Zell, Wakka) or the whiny little brat role (Vaan, Tidus), so I have to say I'm cautiously optimistic.

50+ hours is nothing compared to my playtime for Fallout 3, Dragonquest: Journey of the cursed king and the earlier FF games I have played. Actually looking forward to it ;)

Not too impressed, I think I spent 90 hours on Tales of Vesperia, and that was without getting stuck on puzzles and a minimal amount of all the hundreds of sidequests asI was saving those for the second playthrough.

You know, that would be quite impressive if I haven't been playing games like that all my life, from Baldur's Gate 2 all the way to the recent Dragon Age. It might be unusual to the younger generation used to 10 hour single player campaigns, I guess...
That's very true. Gamers that learnt in that early phase when even the best FPSs had mediocre graphics had more chance to get sucked into timeconsumers like Civ, FF, Baldurs Gate or similar.

I sunk over 100 hours into FFXII to finish it all, so this isn't really news to me, its just a normal staple for a FF game.

50+ hours for only the main story? Knowing FF games there's at least another 50+ of side missions, likely more.

That's looking at easily 100+ hours of gameplay for me. Knowing my OCD when it comes to RPGs, I'll probably be somewhere around the 200+ mark with ease.

Anyone know if they're putting in a New Game+ function?

Also, wtf Square, releasing it in March? I have exams to revise for. :'(

Never once studied in my life, and I got the highest mark my school has ever gotten in the School Certificate(basically an exam about everyhting you learned in Highschool) I got 81 out of 90.
Dont use studying as an excuse!
I'm at University, arguably mine are slightly more important than High School :p

Ditto to everyone who says they spend at least that on a good RPG. I read 50 and expect at least 100 tbh! FFXII gave me about 160 hours cos I did everything (the hunts and sidequests) The hunt with the stupid amount of HP (can't remember the name right now and can't be bothered to go look in the book) took me hours :-O running in and out!
But I loved that game, I know it is a bit of a 'marmite', game amongst FF fans, but I like marmite :) (marmite is a British spread that people love or hate, for Aussies think vegemite)
So it had better blimming well give me over 100 hours or I am gonna sulk so bad they'll feel it at Square's HQ in Japan!

I remember dumping about 60 + hours into Final Fantasy IX so, I'm not surprised to see this one being 50+ hours. I say Bring It On!!

Wonder what the trophies/achievements will be though >.>
