Probably Halo 3 I was never allowed FPSes as a kid because my parents thought they were all "Incredibly violent" so I didn't play them until I was 14 with my friend's copy of Halo 3. I'm 16 now so in retrospect I haven't been playing FPSes for very long maybe thats why I'm so bad at them.

Perfect Dark, and how I do love that game. Still play it for the N64 :)
I think for me it was either this or Goldeneye. Fuck, both those games were amazing. Unfortunately, my parents believed that playing said games would turn me into a serial murderer, so I had to play them at friends houses and so don't have them to play on my 64 now :(

Same. I thanked the FPS gods for bringing such incredible games into existence.

Doom was almost certainly the first I played at a friend's house, I remember having a lot of fun with that chainsaw, and making me very excited for 3D environments. The first shooter I played for any real length of time though was Goldeneye. I saved up for fricking ages to get an N64, and I played that game for months. It probably took me about a week to get past facility.
I was insanely terrible at games back then; my previous gaming experience was a second hand NES with about 4 games, and a lend of a Mega Drive with sonic and Ecco the Dolphin. I never got past Marble zone, and I also remember eventually getting to world 4 in Mario and being insanely happy to have gotten that far.

Like I said, pretty bad. :D
Yeah, I remember the chainsaw - I also specifically remember 'ok, we want to play quake now.'

'...does it have a chainsaw?'

'No, it has an axe, but trust me, it's BETTER'

'I don't really see how an axe could be better but OK'.

I was like 8, haha :D

As far as goldeneye goes, I could never get past bunker on 00 agent mode. I wasn't actually very good at it myself, I could only finish the game on agent mode, and get most of the way through on secret agent. Perfect Dark was way better, in my opinion.

Battlefield 1942. Not old enough to be cool and retro, not new enough to be appreciated by younglings. Still, plenty of good times all round.
WHAT?? It is cool! Maybe not old, but cool.
You misinterpret me. I love Battlefield 1942. I still boot it up on the rare occasion that there is a LAN party in town, or even just to screw around with the planes. I'm just saying it's not quite as classic as something like Doom or Wolfenstein.

Some of my fondest memories are of CTF in Berlin, or insane sniper wars in Operation Battleaxe.

Ain't that the truth. I finished all except about 3 missions in that game on the hardest difficulty. I'd taken a level in badass [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TookALevelInBadass] since my sucky days of Goldeneye!

Beating the Skedar king of special agent ranks pretty high on my "Oh fuck, I actually did that?!" moments in gaming...

Wolfenstein 3D. Just thinking about it makes me want to put on my nostalgia goggles and go play it again...

Oh, dammit. Why would you link to TV Tropes?

I had stuff to do tonight.
